WHO NEEDS BALLET WHEN WE’VE GOT STREET DANCE?
21 October, 7pm-9pm at Vibe Live, 91 – 95 Brick Lane , London E1 6QL
By all accounts, we are now a nation of non-stop groovers. The Dance Manifesto, launched in 2006, tells us that dance is the fastest growing art form, with millions of people both attending performances and taking part. ‘Community dance’ is the grassroots phenomenon du jour, radically changing the idea that dance as an art form is only about men-in-tights and women-in-tutus. And the most cutting-edge community dance is Street Dance – from hip-hop to krumping – which has been identified by the Department of Children, Schools and Families as an exciting new art form in need of more recognition and public funding. It seems ballet is losing its privileged status, but should is it a case of out with the old and in with the new, or is there something to be said for the elitism of ballet?
In 1968, following the assassination of Martin Luther King, the legendary dancer and choreographer Arthur Mitchell returned to New York to set up the Dance Theatre of Harlem to ‘disprove the myth that Negroes can’t do classical ballet’ – a striking contrast to the attitude shown by those now championing community dance. Can something like Street Dance compete with the choreographic traditions and disciplines that have allowed classical ballet choreographers from Balanchine to Wheeldon to continue to astound audiences with their work? Is the opposition between ballet and new dance forms a false one, now that choreographers like Russell Maliphant are incorporating capoeira into classical ballet technique? What role does ballet have in the modern world of dance?
THIS DEBATE WILL FEATURE A SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY IAN ARCHER-WATTERS OF THE SWAN TO CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS LA CYGNE

Ian Archer-Watters, ballet dancer, Les Ballets Grandiva and Fort Worth Ballet

A Hayward Touring exhibition in collaboration with
Autograph ABP
'Slavery in the contemporary world is what it has been since the beginning of human history - the complete control of one person by another. Violence is at the heart of that control, and the aim is profit.'
Kevin Bales, President of Free the Slaves
Today, over 200 years after the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, an estimated 27 million people worldwide are still locked into slavery and servitude across the globe. This major new photography exhibition, organised by Hayward Touring in collaboration with the photographic agencies Autograph ABP and Magnum Photos will take an in-depth look at the prevalence of slavery and injustice in the 21st century through the lenses of eight internationally acclaimed documentary photographers. The exhibition begins at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre

Black Heritage Week @ The Bernie Grant Centre
Three or four days of creative programming that make maximum use of the Bernie Grant Centre - several artforms animate the various disconnected spaces that make up the Bernie Grant Centre and see the centre working as one cohesive whole.
The Centre comprises an auditorium with seating for over 200 people, a cafe and exhibition spaces, a large reception area, upper floor conference rooms and a dance studio with sprung floor. The Black Heritage theme has an obvious resonance with the work and aspirations of Bernie Grant - one of the first Black MP's in the UK and a lifelong activist for a fairer Britain.
Planned programme - still fluid and evolving - looks like this:
Friday 24th October - Black Heritage Childrens Day - Students from the Broad Water Farm Estate primary school will work with a performance arts group for a week beforehand to stage a performance at the BGAC.. A puppet show, Creative Art workshops, carnival costumes, graffiti workshop and street dancing and a two act musical gospel play - The Journey.
Saturday 25th October - Black Heritage Family Day - Craft and Artisan stalls, Retail selling exhibitions of visual arts, books, music, food, emerging designers etc. Performances of Agamemnon - the Greek Classical drama - in an African setting and Call Mr Robeson - a life in songs about Paul Robeson -award winning one act play . [This is the first day of the mid term holidays and will enjoy an enthusiastic turn out]
Sunday 26th - Gospel Brunch in partnership with a Tottenham pentecostal church.
Monday - 27th - Summit Plenary session - Towards a Pan African Media strategy. Keynote speakers from A 24 Media, Kenya, National Black Programming Consortium USA, Henry Bonsu - Colourful Radio etc - [ To be confirmed]
Break out sessions and workshops on Theatre, Education, Music, the Creative Economy, each with intelligent and informed facilitators, each of whom is responsible for putting together their portion of the programme together.
- Dinner / Concert in the main auditorium -an eclectic evening of AfroClassical music from a gifted selection of musicians. The event is free but several different co-hosts are being invited to invite guests and make up tables, to ensure a diverse and interesting mix of guests.
Partnerships for the various segments will include, Colourful Radio, New Nation,The Voice, BBC London, CNN Inside Africa, The Guardian, etc. We welcome partnerships, suggestions, sponsorships and a collective aspiration to create an event where the whole, is more than the sum of its parts. One which we believe that with our collective involvement will be the definitive event for Black History month and a sustainable yearly event.

After a successful launch at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden and a tour to the midlands, the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) has transferred its photographic exhibition to Stratford Circus in East London. The exhibition ‘Black Dance’ in Britain, 1930's to 1990's – Moments… highlights the enormous contribution made to theatrical dance by Black practitioners in Britain. Photographs featured have been sourced from leading photographers including Roger Wood, Dee Conway and Chris Nash as well as the archives of the National Resource Centre for Dance and the New York Public Library.
The exhibition explores issues of identity, racial representation and notions of diversity and ‘the mainstream’. Talented artists featured include: Namron, Cathy Lewis, Greta Mendez, Carol Straker, Sheron Wray and Kenneth Tharpe who performed with ‘mainstream’ companies such as Rambert Dance Company, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and English National Ballet. The exhibition also offers polemical debate with political material from Arts Council reports, and detail on the formation of organisations such as Minorities Arts Advisory Service (MAAS). It features images of MAAS Movers, Ekome, Adzido Pan African Dance ensemble and Kokuma Dance Theatre.
Other key dance companies featured that have shaped Black British Dance history include Phoenix Dance Theatre, ACE Dance and Music, the Jiving Lindy Hoppers, Carl Campbell Dance Company 7, JazzXchange, Bullies Ballerinas, Badejo Arts, RJC Dance Company, and Union Dance Company.
ADAD Director, Jeanette Bain says: “These photographs are national treasures and a great educational resource. They are a glimpse into some of the many untold stories of how much Black dance artists have contributed to British culture in spite of the difficulties they have faced.”
The exhibition was created with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England. The tour is supported by East London Dance, Portrait of a Nation, London Borough of Newham, Stratford Circus, and The Drum.
In December 2008, the exhibition will be moving on to The Drum arts centre in Birmingham where it will remain until the end of January 2009.
