If you want to learn Sabar, Mama Adele is one of the best teachers. You will learn the rhythms and some of the new steps that have just come out in Senegal.

Mama Adele is know very well in the dance community for her passion and wealth of knowledge. She teaches dances from Senegal, Guinea and Mali . She is very well known for her teaching of Sabar, which is the national social dance of Senegal and dances of the Casamance region and Jola dance.

Trip to Cuba;
Element are planning a trip to Cuba for dancers and musicians. Below is a write up of the trip. We are aiming to take 20 talented people on our tour, and places are filling up fast. Please email to register your interest.

Cuba Programme Overview (We have tried to keep this very brief to give you an idea of the sort of
trip we are planning, but Im sure you will have many questions! Ask away!)

The trip will begin with two nights & days in Matanzas, the birthplace of Rumba, and the home of some of Cuba's most beautiful beaches. We will stay together in a charming all-inclusive hotel (everyone will stay in the same place for this short trip within a trip). This time will help everyone get to know their hosts and each other, and fully enjoy what Matanzas has to offer in the short time that we have there (namely a lot of Rumba, parties and an unwind from the UK!)

On Friday evening we will go to Havana, and people will move into their respective lodgings (hotel, hostel or homestay). Each day will include an exciting mix of classes, cultural activities, and free time, depending on the program you have designed. Our expert team of dancers, musicians, historians and hosts, will welcome you into their world, and share with you the rich and unknown treasures of an authentic “Havana style” music & dance experience.

At the end of the week, some participants will head home, feeling the music & dance inside them in a new way. Those who stay on will continue their training, and dig deeper into more aspects of this beautiful living culture.

After 5 days in Havana, the group will have it's farewell party with the team, and the many other Havana dancers & musicians they have be-friended in their stay. They will travel to The World Biosphere Reserve, Las Terrazas, to enjoy their last 2 days immersed in the enchanting natural beauty of the Cuban countryside, with the sounds of traditional Cuban son and guajira mu

NIGHTLIFE OPTION: Our Cuban Team stays up-to-date on which bands are appearing, which dance companies are performing, and where you can find the locals. They will accompany you, party with you, and ensure that you always get home cheaply and safely. If you select this option, it will cover you for evening events throughout the trip, and will provide you with a discount if you select to attend a high-end event like a Los Van Van concert or a Cabaret show. If you don't select this option in advance, you can pay for any night outings you choose to participate in, but you may have a higher price.

LUNCH OPTION: Our Matanzas hotel will have lunch included, but for the rest of the trip, YOU get to decide: a) choose the “lunch option” and don't worry about bringing cash for your midday meal. b) or pay as you go, eating what and when you wish.

PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE OPTION: For those wishing to perform in Cuba to gain performance experience/ add to their CV/ possibly have their piece rehearsed by Carpeta de Waldemar of ‘Baile nacional de television’. Dancers will be able to perform in various venues in Cuba depending on their performance pieces and quality of work.

NYC SALSA IS a firing collaboration between Europe’s finest mambo/latin jazz group Snowboy & The Latin Section and one of the true legends of salsa, Puerto Rican singer Herman Olivera from New York! A transatlantic alliance that shows you how real salsa should be played – with power, vigour, gusto and swing, just as it was in the music’s heyday in the mid-1970s!
Snowboy is probably the UK’s best known conga player/percussionist both through his own productions as well as his session work with many top bands such as Lisa Stansfield, James Taylor Quartet, Basia, Cold Cut and Incognito. However, it is with his band The Latin Section that he has achieved the most recognition since 1992, especially his recordings in the 1990s for Acid Jazz Records which sold in their tens of thousands. The band appeared live worldwide from the USA to Japan playing their hardcore afro-cuban jazz! Snowboy & The Latin Section have recorded for a variety of labels including Acid Jazz, Ubiquity/Cubop, Chilli Funk and most recently, the super cool Freestyle Records. This tour featuring New York salsa legend Herman Olivera on vocals is an exclusive 7 date tour sponsored by the Arts Council Of England (hence the very reasonable £10 advance entry price), and it is the first appearance in Leeds for Snowboy & The Latin Section since 2004!
Herman Olivera was born to Puerto Rican parents in Newark, New Jersey in 1959 and by his early 20s, he was singing in one of New York’s finest salsa bands Conjunto Libre. This was followed by recording and gigging with such salsa legends as Eddie Palmieri and Johnny Pacheco, two of the orginal salsa pioneers from the 1960s and the Fania Records era. He has featured as lead vocalist on over 40 recordings, including the Grammy award winning debut Spanish Harlem Orchestra CD “Un Gran Dia En El Barrio” (2002) as well as popular CDs by Jimmy Bosch, Johnny Polanco, Andy Montanez and Descarga Boricua. He has been the lead singer in the Eddie Palmieri Orchestra since 1998, one of the legendary salsa pianist’s longest serving vocalists! Herman Olivera is considered to be one of the finest salsa singers (“soneros”) in the world today and when you see him live, you witness the real art of a “sonero” where improvisation is as important as the song! This is Herman Olivera’s first appearance in Leeds since the Eddie Palmieri Orchestra concert at Casa Latina in 1999!
Warming up before the band and after the live set are two of UK's favourite salsa DJs, Lubi Jovanovic and Fabio Bahia, partners in crime since 1995 and the legendary Casa Latina club in Leeds!.They will be playing the finest salsa old and new alongside some kicking mambo and latin jazz!
This concert is so much more than just a salsa dance event! Snowboy & The Latin Section features some of the best latin and jazz musicians in the UK and their ensemble playing and soloing is second to none! Herman Olivera is simply one of the finest salsa singers on the planet! If you attend just ONE latin music concert in 2011, try make it make this one! You won’t be disappointed!
Remember : only 400 tickets available for Wardrobe gigs and the big ones like La Excelencia and Asere sold out in advance so don't hang around, especially at tickets being just £10 advance! Buy upfront to make sure you get in........
Out of towners : check www.laterooms.com for great quality hotels in Leeds. Great 3 and 4 star hotels for as little as £50 a room.

Meanwhile, our Monday drop in classes (Latin Contemporary and Urban Latin are going very well, and the class is proressing at an exciting speed. If you would like to come and join us it is not too late! Mondays 7.30-9.45pm (£10 for the evening)!

That’s all for now :-) Peace and Love,
Ella and all at Element Dance Company.

The Afro-Latin Lounge

Dear friends, students and community,

Thank you very much for agreeing to take part in this competition. As I mentioned in my e-mail, the prize for getting the question below right is a copy of the Creole Choir of Cuba's album. And without further ado, here's the question you need to answer:

Back in Cuba the choir is known as 'Desandann'. What does that term translate as?

- Ascendants
- Descendants
- Antecedents

Please, leave your name in the comments box. Then, send me a message at the e-mail address on my profile letting me know where to send the free CD. As Aleksandr Orlov would say: Simples! Unfortunately for our beloved meerkat, James 'Ulysses' Joyce got there first.

Well, what are you waiting for? Get writing!

And now for the rest of this week's news:

Currently performing in the West End production FELA!, top class dancer and choreographer Papson Sylla is an endless source of creativity and energy. His style is a mix of traditional African dance with modern elements.

Famous African artists ask him regularly to create choreographies for their video clips and shows: Tiken Jah Fakoly, Oumou Sangaré, Césaria Evora, Khaled, Shaft, Norma Claire, Aïcha Koni, Tissénifo, Savane Allah, Samba Oussou, Amadou e Mariam and Rokia Troare.

As a child, he was called the father of the sound as he was always running and looking for the sounds of the Djembedrum. Papson participated on his first dance contest at the age of 5 years. Later his parents didn’t want him to become a dancer, so he left his family to follow his dream. His journey took him through several African countries and national ballets to Paris. Before he settled down in Paris he became the choreographer of the Ivory Dance company and latter the assistant choreographer of George Momboye (AfriKa Afrika).

Since 2003 he works as a freelance choreographer and dancer. In 2009 he created his first Afro contemporary Dance Theatre “ Mon Histoire “.
