12.15pm to 2.15pm
BodyRhythms - Release, Relax and Let go
movement dance meditation
(Class suitable for all levels)
Move with the presence of your body in this creative and fun therapeutic movement workshop that uses the grounded dynamics of African dance, engaged with the meditative principles and teachings of various therapeutic practices, to show you how to connect with the inner rhythms and micro movements of your body. Learn how to gain a more focused and balanced life of freedom and ease by understanding how to release stress and anxiety. Move your body from tension into relaxation, to live the life that you are, rather than the lifestyle that you follow.
2.30pm to 4pm
Traditional African Highlife Dance Fusion
(Class suitable for all levels)
Engage in the subtleties of Yoruba embodied fluid motion, to that of Congolese isolated pelvic scoops and hip spirals, in this fun fresh and liberating African dance awakening. Give yourself the chance to move like you have never moved before, deep from within the conscious body, to bring about a renewed vitality, vigour and punch to your organic body.
4.15pm to 5.45pm
Contemporary African dance - embodied dance technique
(Open level, but should have some dance experience)
Experience the sculpture of motion, through choreographer Francis Angol’s fluid embodied dance practice. Articulate your articulations, through the art of contemporary African dance. Allow your spine to move like the fluids of your body, and your skeletal being to resonate with the rhythm of the beat; and your breath to flow with the harmony of your soul.
This is a unique introductory workshop that introduces the individual to choreographer Francis Angol's, fresh and creative approach to working with African dance within a contemporary framework. The technique of style places focus on the embodiment of rhythm and movement to encourage the body to express itself in space and time. A synthesis that utilises African dance forms as the basis for movement development and artistic expression, influenced by Caribbean, Jazz and western Contemporary dance, to form a distinctive artistic signature that is supported by a strong underpinning musical resonance of enriched rhythms and sounds.
One of Brazil’s most talented choreographers and teachers in Afro-Brazilian Dance and Samba, Irineu was born in São Luís, in the state of Maranhão, in the north of Brazil.
A pioneer who became a solid reference within the Brazilian and African rhythms and movements scene, Irineu Nogueira is a wholehearted dancer and teacher who combines genuine passion with a contemporary vision.
For more than 15 years developing his own dance language worldwide (called Abieié, which means regeneration in the Yorùbá language), he experiments with a contemporary form, Brazilian dance styles with expressions of African rhythms.
“I knew Irineu Nogueira for more than 10 years when we used to do musicals in São Paulo. He is extremely professional, and one of the most important and brilliant dancers I’ve ever met. He is a tireless researcher in the development of contemporary dance and the valuation of the legacy of Black culture in Brazil. He appears in my first DVD “When the sky clears,” dancing on stage, with his body preparation work in the concept of scenic movement and body awareness.” Fabiana Cozza (Brazilian singer)
Choreographer for Brazilian Carnival
Turning amateur dancers and average civilians into protagonists of the greatest Carnival parade on earth in a limited period of time has been one of Irineu’s tasks in the past few years.
A follower of the motto: “Anyone can dance, express him or herself and interpret a story”, when choreographing the performance of a “Comissão de Frente”, Irineu not only delivers his unmatchable creativeness and intrepidness – responsible for his “Estandarte de Ouro” award – but also dedicates himself to transform those under his wings into better human beings.

The sensational, seductively-voiced singer Yasmin Levy celebrates a very modern mix of fiery flamenco and the Jewish-Spanish tradition of Ladino. She won Best Newcomer at the BBC World Music Awards and joins 2011’s hottest Latin stars with her new album, Sentir, produced by the acclaimed Javier Limón (producer of Portuguese fado superstar Mariza among others).
He started as a rock musician, and then wrote film music for Pedro Almodovar, now Daniel Melingo is reinventing Tango for the 21st century. His vagabond edge combines with his extraordinary theatrical presence, somewhere between Paolo Conte, Tom Waits and Ian Dury and finds him adopting the persona of a street poet or tango comic.
UK Debut for Muchachito the Spanish composer and singer whose intimate but energetic mix of music and monologues has taken him from playing on the streets to filling bull rings with his band Bombo Infierno. Tonight Muchachito appears in something close to his original street material format, a one-man-band Rumboxing – at the point where rumba and swing meet hand to hand combat Oh, and he’s bringing his painter Santos de Veracruz with him to create some old school art onstage. An intimate evening of improvisation and a broad canvas.

Ojos de Brujo return from Barcelona for a special show celebrating ten years since the group’s foundation. The band fuse flamenco’s driving rhythms with hip-hop, funk, punk and other stray sounds snatched from the Barcelona street as well as some strong Cuban influences.
Depedro is the nom de music of Spanish guitarist-singer-songwriter Jairo Zavala, sideman for Calexico, as well as Andrew Bird. His second album for National Geographic Nubes De Papel (Paper Clouds) is just out and was produced (as was his eponymous debut, by Calexico’s Joey Burns with other Calexico members sitting in on the sessions.

“Probably the most fun you can have without removing your poncho.” The Word on Mexican Institute of Sound
A festival within a festival as La Li nea celebrates the unstoppable beat rattling a continent’s youth, from Buenos Aires to Mexico City: the force of CUMBIA!
Mexican Institute of Sound make their UK debut “cutting the high-octane pace from dance with energetically proud Mexican flavours” (Clash). No wonder Dazed & Confused, “can’t stop listening to his frazzled mariachi remake of The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony”.
Buenos Aires’ Axel Krygier and his band pop mix some twisted digital cumbia “like a llama on speed...unashamedly, wonderfully weird stuff” Songlines.
And to start, it’s the original cumbia of Pollito Boogaloo, led by Colombia’s Rafael Berrio, and styling classic 60s cumbia, vallenato and puya. DJ Russ Jones of Arriba La Cumbia is amidships on the decks.
This one is so sold out that even if Compay Segundo’s mum and dad turned up with proof of identity we would have to turn them away.
Instead we highly recommend that you book early for AfroCubism – from the people who brought you Buena Vista Social Club – which combines Eliades Ochoa and his group with a galactic range of Malian stars. This one is at the Albert Hall on 27th June and is already selling like pan caliente.
Also check out www.comono.co.uk for forthcoming shows by Bomba Estereo, Calle 13 and the amazing Lucha Future featuring Bostich & Fussible of the Nortec Collective.

The official message for
World Dance Day
29 April 2011
For the greater part of the history of mankind, dance took place outdoors. People would gather in forest glades, village squares, churchyards, or on threshing floors, to enjoy dancing for hours on end. Nowadays, dance mostly takes place in ballrooms, clubs, theatres, school halls, studios and discotheques.
This year we propose making a step back towards nature by celebrating World Dance Day in open spaces: streets, squares, parks, stadiums, beaches, parking lots, clearings - anywhere under the sky.
The urge to dance is a natural impulse; dancers worship nature in their way, connecting with the universe and feeling its juices flow into them.
All through the year we teach dance, we rehearse, we perform within four walls. On this special day dedicated to dance, let us mark the difference by practising, teaching or performing for everyone to see. It might be cold and rainy, the floor is certainly not good enough, and the wind takes the music away, but the beauty in those movements and the joy on those faces will brighten the hearts of the spontaneous audience of passers-by.

President of the International Dance Council CID
UNESCO, Paris
1. The official Dance Day message is mailed to over 150,000 dance professionals in 200 countries. It is translated to dozens of languages. Please ask for a translation, or translate the message to the language of your country; send it to dance organizations and the media. You can find guidelines and previous messages at www.unesco.org/ngo/cid
2. World Dance Day, every year on 29 April, established and promoted by CID, aims at attracting attention to the art of dance. It is celebrated by millions of dancers around the globe. On that day, dance companies, dance schools, organizations and individuals, professionals as well as amateurs, organize an activity addressing an audience different from their usual one.
3. The International Dance Council (Conseil International de la Danse - CID) is the official umbrella organization for all forms of dance in all countries of the world.
