Capoeira Angola and beyond Master Class with Mestre Carlao
Saturday March 31st, 2012
Praxis Art Space 3-9 Belfast Rd. Stoke Newington
10am – 1pm
Cost £15
The movement and gestures of Capoeira Angola evoke the fight, dance, pleasure and pain of a cultural and historic movement and in some way evoke the slave journey and the rites of passage from Africa. It can be used to free ones physical rhythmical, vocal and musical expression, and as a metaphor and philosophical framework with which one can think about life. for all these reasons it has been used effectively as a tool for body conditioning, training and as an expressive form in both dance and theatre. Carlo Alexandre has developed a system where capoeira goes beyond the limits of tradition into the contemporary production of art and culture. One of his main objectives is that this system can serve as a tool for reflection and increased knowledge of ones physical limitations and strengths.
Carlo Alexandre Teixeira da Silva known internationally as Mestre Carlao is a renowned master in the Afro Brazilian Martial art of Capoeira Angola. He is a trained physiotherapist and incorporates his expertise into his teachings. He is a celebrated pedagog, running many international workshops (in Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France, America, Portugal, Spain and Germany).
His Capoeira organization: Kabula (www.kabula. org) has branches both in Rio and London and strong connections to refugee organization: Bidna, working in various crisis areas around the world.
