The Afro-Latin Lounge

It may have been a very wintery few months since we last updated you, but that didn’t stop us performing at parades and carnivals across Europe, and with spring now in full-swing, we have plenty of exciting new projects and events to share with you too.

Bremen Carnival 2015

February saw our Co-Artistic Director, Charles, monkeying-around at Europe’s largest Samba Carnival in Bremen on 6th & 7th.
Bremen Carnival, now in its 30th year, animated the city streets with colourful costume, dance and lively rhythms, attracting around 30,000 visitors from across the globe. This year’s theme was ‘One Big Circus’, so we took some of our brightest and costumes, make-up and fineries to take part in the spectacle with some of our favourite companies.

As part of HiStArt, an EU funded project, we were delighted to collaborate with Fooldance, led by Markus Hoft, providing movement workshops and choreography to bring our costumes to life. We were also joined by Andrea Greenwood, who ran a make-up workshop that showed artists how to complete their characters with intricate design and flamboyant use of colour.

Take a look at our Monkeys in action here
We marvelled at the extravagance and technicality of costumes by our friends at Oakleaf and Stelzen-Art; observing how we can incorporate more mechanical elements and inflatable’s into our own designs.

For more information and pictures, check out Bremen Carnival’s Facebook page.

Lucerne Carnival 2015

This was our first experience of Lucerne Carnival, an annual event that dates back to the Middle Ages. The streets become filled with strange characters in fantastic masks and costumes to scare away the winter and welcome spring to the city. The carnival boasts three fantastic parades over five days (12th – 17th February) which start early in the morning and last late into the evening, creating an immersive and surreal environment. We joined our HiStArt partners from Stelzen-Art, Oakleaf and Aalborg Carnival, participating in the parades and learning about the traditions that have been sustained through centuries.

Inspiring Forms – Forms in Fabric Workshop

In March our Co-Artistic Directors attending a professional development workshop at the UKCCA, led by innovative designers Piet Koenekoop and Bettina Eichblatt-Koenekoop from Oakleaf Creativity and Janine Jaeggi and Martin Sasse from Stelzen-Art. Using inflatable technology, they demonstrated the possibilities of carnival design and structure through use of fans, fabrics and lighting with different sewing techniques to create bold and beautiful characters.

Night of Festivals Touring 2015

After a successful run of street performances and workshops in Slough and Leicester last year, Night of Festivals Touring is back with a packed programme this summer. We’re excited to be taking part in this fantastic project by ArtReach, bringing Carnival arts and performance to communities across the UK and Europe.

This year we’ll be working with community groups to bring workshops and performances to Lincoln (13th – 15th June), Hounslow (11th – 12th July) and Barking (18th- 19th July), before ending the
tour with huge finale in Leicester on 3rd – 4th October, as part of the Rugby World Cup celebrations.
Here’s a video compilation of the highlights of the Night of Festivals 2013/14 tour, to give you a little flavour of what to expect:
Internship Programme

In February, we bid farewell to our latest Project Assistant and Admin Intern, Thisbe Casellini. After joining us in October, she quickly became part of the team and was a major contributor on a range

of projects. We were so impressed with her administration skills that we asked her to manage the office throughout Claire’s extended annual leave in January. We’re incredibly proud of what Thisbe has achieved in her 4 months at Mandinga, and this is only just the start of her journey. Here’s what Thisbe had to say about her time with us:

“The last 4 months have been the most enriching work based experience I have ever had. The fact that the internship is so well structured has meant that I have learnt on the job, whilst not feeling too pressured to get things right. I have learnt project and administrative skills such as project management [...] and by the time Claire left the office I felt confident to devise whole projects unsupervised.“

Creative Employment Programme

The Creative Employment Programme supports the creation of training programmes and paid internship opportunities in for young unemployed people (aged 16-24), wishing to pursue a career in the arts and cultural sector.

Mandinga have received funding, as part of a consortium of Lambeth-based arts organisations and lead by the Creative Society, to support two 6 month intern placements; a Project & Administrative Assistant (continued form our existing rolling programme), and a new Artistic Assistant role. We recruited early this year, and our new members of staff joined us this month! Please meet Nadia and Stella-Jane...

Nadia Rich - Project and Administrative Assistant

Since finishing my Drama degree at Queen Mary University of London in 2012, I have worked with charities such as Age UK, Outward and inter-generational arts charity Magic Me on various community-based projects as a Workshop Facilitator and Programmes Assistant. I then went on to complete an Advanced Apprenticeship in Community Arts Management through the Albany Theatre in Deptford. This work has given me some experience in project and event management, which I am hoping to develop through my 6 month placement at Mandinga Arts. I am excited to learn more about different Carnival costumes, performance styles and traditions, working in diverse community settings. After this placement, I hope to continue working for community-based arts organisations before training as an Arts Fundraiser, working with small companies to enable participation and engagement in the arts.

Stella-Jane Odoemelam - Artistic Assistant

From a young age I have been immersed in theatre and the performing arts, from designing, making, devising and even acting. For me it has been imbedded into my culture and lifestyle and more than an artistic outlet. After studying art and design at Camberwell College of arts I went on to study Costume design for theatre and screen at Wimbledon College of art- University of the arts London. From then on I was able to establish myself as a designer and a young creative, working for companies such as Film London and the Young Vic. I have always been intrigued in different cultures, traditions, and most importantly engaging with the community which has always been a central practice in my works. For this reason I was drawn to Mandinga Arts and am truly honoured to now be a part of the Mandinga Arts team. Through this placement I’m hoping to  learn new creative processes, working for an organisation that shares the same passions and learn more about site specific performances  and  carnival  from various cultures and traditions; an aspect of performing arts that I’m am extremely intrigued about and hope to one day specialise in

African Summer – Horniman Museum

The Horniman summer festival will be celebrating Africa this year, with a programme of music, dance, theatre, street arts and more, taking place from 5th July to 30th August. Mandinga Arts will be running workshops in making costumes, props and puppets, using the Horniman’s African collection as inspiration. We’ll then be ending the festival with two parades to give summer a proper send off. There are many ways to get involved throughout the festival, just keep an eye our Facebook page for more details.

Animal Farm (Work in Progress)

Julieta, Co-Artistic Director, has been experimenting with fabrics to create different textures to create chicken feet in the studio. By rouching material using a technique called Puffing, she’s been able to give the impression of the distinct bumpy skin on the lower legs and feet. As well as this, a design has been screen printed onto the lycra bodysuit, giving the impression of fluffy, mottled feathers.

A feather design has been intricately cut into foam sheets, requiring great attention to detail. Airbrushing will be then be used to create a 3D effect for the feathers, bringing them to life on the foam skeletal structure.

Our Artistic Assistant Stella and volunteer Ann have been making different prototypes to create dog masks. They’ve been working with paper templates, sculpting foam to create different breeds of dog and represent their characters. Moveable elements, such as jaws and tongues, are being used; adding playfulness to each mask that will make them more interactive for audiences.

Look out for...
  • ·         Shademakers Jubilee Celebration & Launch Event, May

They will be opening their studios in the Isle of Wight, inviting you take part in a workshop tour, exhibition and to try on some of their fabulous costumes too. Have a read of their Newsletter for more details.
  • ·         Aalborg Carnival, May
Northern Europe’s largest carnival takes place in Aalborg, Denmark, this May. This year’s theme is “taboo” and we’re extremely excited to be heading out to Denmark to join our friends at Aalborg Karneval on 16th & 17th May on this extraordinary celebration.

  • ·         Chatteris Midsummer Festival, June
Mandinga Arts will be leading workshops and bringing the vibrant colours of Mardi Gras to Chatteris on Saturday 27th June, with a walking parade to launch the Midsummer Festival.

  • ·         Waterloo Carnival, July
Waterloo Carnival returns for its twelfth year on Friday 3rd July, evoking the sights and sounds of summer in the streets of Waterloo. Local schools and community centres will be participating in this intergenerational and multi-cultural parade. With workshops, music & dancing and a magnificent Carnival procession, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy.
