Dear Assoc Dance of the African Diaspora members and the All - African Diasporan Dance Community at Large,
Inspired fantastic good news to share, Paul Liburd, Contemporary dancer has been awarded this honour and if you don't know who Paul is I am sure it won't be hard to find out, he is simply one of the most gifted, generous and humble dancers to grace the British stage and his performing career has traversed modern and ballet companies in that order. He began his dance studies up in Leeds in the famed Harehills school where so so so many fantastic dancers and choreographers have emerged.
He is still quite brilliant, our Desmond Richardson I would say. I heard the news via Kenneth Tharp OBE and wanted to share. Paul is on the front cover the Black Dance book by Edward Thorpe - its now a generation out of date, a call out there for someone to take up that particular mantle and yes its Paul on the cover. Here's a link of him dancing solo from circa 1989?

"Those who hear not the music things the dancer's mad".
All best,

Don't miss JAMBO JAM - one night, two great causes

or email jambojam@ymail.comAll profits from ticket sales go directly to help the children at Grace's Children's Home and Boma Orphanage. We look forward to seeing you there!BOMA ORPHANAGE, TANZANIA Kichijo (Kilimanjaro Children Joy Foundation) was set up in aid of Boma Ng'ombe orphanage, Tanzania. Mama Lucie Lema and the family provide support and a loving home for over 120 orphaned and abandoned children, ranging from 8 months to 20 years. The initial aim was to raise enough money to buy the existing home that Mama rents for the orphans. Due to the ever increasing number of babies being dropped at the door, the number of children is rapidly rising and the facilities are not up to a standard where it would be economical to buy the property; 6 infants to a bed, barely existent kitchen facilities and desperately poor sanitary conditions. It was therefore decided to buy a piece of land to rebuild a new home for the Boma children, including dormitories, bathrooms, a kitchen & dining area, play area and farmland. There are plans to build a well and install solar panels to keep running costs low.

GRACE'S CHILDREN'S HOME, KENYA Grace's Children's Home was set up by retired teachers Annah Moko and her husband who noticed the poverty and abuse of little girls in their local area. Initially only starting with a few children, the number continues to grow. Annah and her husband have no income and have attempted to live sustainable livelihoods by growing and eating the produce from their small plot of land. However, as the number of children has grown, this has been impossible. The children are in full time education but living conditions are tough as there are not enough beds, money for food or clothes. Another issue facing Grace's Children's Home is that they rent their plot of land and do not have enough money to buy it which means they could have it taken away from them at anytime. If Grace's Children's Home could purchase the land then their problems would be solved. In the meantime, they survive on little food and small donations from people.

Tickets: Standard - £7.50 online (£9.50 full price)Barbican Members - £6.50 online (£7.50 full price) / Concessions £7.50

Cuban fever hits London this summer as Havana Cultura supports the Cine Cuba Film Festival at the Barbican Centre. Havana Cultura is a cultural initiative developed by Havana Club. It aims at increasing the visibility of emerging Cuban artists. The summer event forms part of this year’s Cuba50 programme, which celebrates Cuban culture and also marks the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
Returning for the second year and fifty years on from the revolution, the Barbican’s Cine Cuba Festival combines contemporary cinematic perspectives on Cuban life and classics from the foremost filmmakers of the post-revolutionary era.
Cine Cuba will feature some of the most acclaimed Cuban actors and directors, including the re-release of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea’s groundbreaking introduction of gay themes into Cuban cinema, Strawberry and Chocolate. You can catch this landmark film every night of the Festival. Other highlights include films from Cuba’s leading contemporary filmmaker Pavel Giroud, the ‘enfant terrible’ of post-revolutionary cinema Humberto Solás and the latest releases from Havana; Personal Belongings, Omertà and The Horn of Plenty.
