AFRICAN DANCE ENCOUNTERThursday 9 & Friday 10 September, 7.45pmPurcell Room at Queen Elizabeth HallAfrican Dance Encounter is an evening of dance, live music and discussion exploring traditional, contemporary and urban approaches to dance from Africa and its diaspora. The evening includes a performance by Frititi (Nii Tagoe) and a collaborative piece created by ADisapora Collective with live music arranged and directed by Nii Tagoe. ADiaspora Collective combines the creative visions of choreographers Vicki Igbokwe and Alesandra Seutin (Uchenna Dance Company and Vocab Dance). Each performance is followed by a post-show discussion.Tickets start at £6.50 for full-time students and for ages 16 and under.Presented by Southbank Centre and the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD). Having hosted the Bloom Festival in June 2009, Southbank Centre is continuing to work with ADAD to support the development of artists from the African diaspora. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Sadler’s Wells with two programmes that showcase the extraordinary artistry of a company that has changed the face of American dance over the course of more than half a century.

Programme One includes the gripping solo In/Side, plus the elegant Dancing Spirit, a piece that fuses movement from Brazil, Cuba and the USA. Suite Otis is a playful battle of the sexes set to some of Otis Redding’s best-loved songs, while Robert Battle’s The Hunt is an exhilaratingly athletic tour-de-force for six men.Highlights of Programme Two include the world premiere of Anointed, set to a soundtrack by Moby, from acclaimed choreographer Christopher Huggins plus Artistic Director Judith Jamison’s 1993 Emmy award-winning production Hymn, a tribute to company founder Alvin Ailey.Both programmes feature the classic Revelations, the most seen modern dance work in the world, choreographed by Ailey and first performed in 1960. A piece that celebrates and pays tribute to American dance music and history; it explores a journey from deepest grief to unbound joy and continues to inspire audiences whenever it is performed.

Idrissa's WEEKLY class starts this Wednesday 8th September. During this time Idrissa will work with dance enthusiasts of all abilities and build upon a reportoire of his own distinct choreographies, as well as introducing dancers to cultural dances from his homeland, that are performed to traditional rhythms. . . Drop-ins are welcome, but to really benefit from his expertise, attendence of the whole course is highly recommended.

And whatever stage you're at, Idrissa's flair, grace, ease and synchronicity with the timing of the music will leave you humbled, and reaching that little bit further.

Live drumming!

Suitable for beginners (preferably with some dance experience) as well as more advanced dancers.
