Treading the Baseline...
...is the title of connectingvibes* 2011 Season of Dance. Treading the Baseline is a mixture of revised repertory pieces plus new works created by a mix of well-established and new choreographers. It's a program of work specially designed to open the mind to a multi-sensory experience.
The program for this new season of dance comprises of the following...
Traces of Home
A favourite work featured last season from Jamaica-born choreographer Oniel Pryce. Exploring memories and relationships, the piece is a contemporary fusion of Caribbean dance movements.
Leave Me a Message
This piece explores some of the thousands of messages left in cyberspace every day, from the mundane to last minute pleas of love, life and death.
Waiting for... NEW
A piece that looks at how some people wait forever for the 'Big Moment' - that 'Once in a Lifetime Opportunity', while others refuse to wait preferring to take destiny in their own hands.
Dancehall 3000 NEW
A newly commissioned piece from Dancehall specialist, Paradigmz, that is heavily influenced by the fluidity of dance hall movements linked with a dynamic urban reggae sound. With Dancehall 3000 you'll definitely feel the vibes of contemporary Caribbean movements.
By All Means Necessary NEW
This is a newly commissioned piece by Sheika Edwards, a recent graduate from the Dance Foundation Degree program, it examines the ruthlessness and bravery that you sometimes have to apply when you identify that certain things no longer have a place in your life.

Contemporary Dance with Akosua Boakye-Nimo, Thursday 10th March 2011, 7.30-9.00pm.
Akosua’s Contemporary dance draws from diverse movement styles, culture, every day behavior and influences of music. Her classes introduce and support participants to develop some of the technical and aesthetic values that shape western dance forms with traces of African dance. The dancer develops the basic physical and interpretative skills required for contemporary dance. An emphasis is placed on the precise relationship between body parts and the energy of performance. The class begins with a warm up. It continues with centre exercises and travelling phases before building physical and interpretative skills through a dance combination in which the dancer displays both freedom and control.

Amara Kante: is one of the world’s foremost proponents of the now world-renowned music and dance culture of the Manding people of West Africa. He ranks amongst the greatest living players of the djembe drum, an instrument rated as the fastest growing in the world.
If its current growth continues, Djembe, pronounced, “jim-bay”, may soon surpass both the steel pan and the conga in international popularity. It first made an impact outside West Africa in the 1950’s due to the world tours of Les Ballets Africaines led by the Guinean Fodeba Keita. Its spread in the U.S. and Canada was centred on Ladji Camara, a member of Les Ballets Africaines who came to the U.S. to work with modern dance icon Katherine Dunham. Since 1960 he has trained multiple generations of American players.
Amara Kante is currently based in Europe and resides in Marseilles. He does however; maintain a rigorous work schedule in Africa, North America and the Caribbean.
Born June 12, 1974 in Abidjan, the capital city of Ivory Coast in West Africa, Amara Kante came from the Forger cast of the Guinea Manding, that historically specialized in an indigenous African Metallurgy and nature based spirituality.
Amara received his calling at the tender age of seven when he was called to play with the legendary musical group Koteba of Abidjan. His ability to master a wide range of instruments such as dununs, bara, n’tama, and krin, his encyclopaedic memory of rhythms and his exceptional technique on the djembe drum, soon led to acknowledgement of his status as a master drummer and his acclaim as one of the greatest African artists in the world today.
Continuing in the tradition of Koteba and Les Ballets Africaines, Amara has opened his doors to the entire world and has performed on all continents. His resume is astounding. He has worked in the capacity of artistic director, teacher, master drummer, and performed with great artists such as Mory Kante, Peter Gabriel, Georges M’onboye, Moriba Koite, Benkan Foli and Rockiya Kone.
Amara was first invited to Toronto’s Muhtadi International Drum Festival in 2006 and has since contributed greatly to the culture of Toronto by teaching workshops and sharing his culture especially amongst youth.
In 2007, he co-founded Baro Dununba, a Toronto based percussion ensemble dedicated to the percussion music of Africa and the African Diaspora.
He is looking forward to finishing his new album and continued involvement with and contribution to culture in Canada.

Ibrahima Kone: was born in Bouaké, which is a village situated in the center of the Ivory Coast. His origins are from the Mandika people.
Artist dancer choreographer and director from the Ivory Coast. Holder d' a Certificate of Professional Competence of the DRAC d' Aix-en-Provence. Former student of l' INA (Institute National of Arts in Coast d' Ivory), and ex choreographer of the Foliba Company with Adama DRAMA. He teaches the traditional dances of l' Africa of l' West in the area of PACA. In short, his teachings are based on what he thinks is important concerning dance: He also teaches the culture with stories and what the dances mean.
Ibrahima has traveled extensively and taught in both Europe and the USA.

The weekend included sessions on reflective learning, creative collaboration and innovation, led by a stellar team of trainers including Anamaria Wills (CIDA), Gaylene Gould (WriteTalkListen) and independent consultant, Theresa Beattie.
Over the next few months, the Agile Leaders will work in 4 teams to develop exciting new creative ideas, which will be showcased at Stratford Circus on May 26th, 2011. Agile Leaders is supported by the Cultural Leadership Programme’s Meeting the Challenge scheme.

Agile Leaders
The Agile Leaders Challenge is a professional development programme for dance and creative media professionals led by a consortium including ADAD, East London Dance and Ochee Design. In January, the programme kicked off with a weekend intensive. We whisked our group of 14 participants away to Highgate House in Northamptonshire for two and a half days of training, creative collaboration and really good food.

Latin fever will sweep Liverpool this summer as the Liverpool Carnival Company and Orb Events are delighted to announce BRAZILICA a new international Brazilian carnival event for Liverpool, which promises to be the biggest carnival of its kind in the UK.
BRAZILICA will be a massive 3 day event taking place across the city from Friday 15th - Sunday 17th July.
The festival is an exciting expansion of Liverpool Carnival Company's hugely successful carnival parade, which has existed since Liverpool's Capital of Culture year in 2008 and attracted over 30,000 spectators in 2010. With irresistible rhythms, extravagant costumes, sparkling dancers and colossal floats there is guaranteed to be plenty of glitz and glamour and EVERYONE is invited to join in the celebration!
BRAZILICA promises to be Liverpool's most exciting, exotic and vibrant spectacle: a Rio-style Brazilian samba carnival exploding with life, music and dazzling costumes through the streets of the city centre.
BRAZILICA is inspired by the exciting carnivals, which take place across Brazil during the weekend before the start of Lent. The most famous of these carnivals and arguably, the most famous carnival in the world is the Rio De Janeiro carnival, a snippet of which can be seen here
Fabio Aurelio, LFC footballer and Brazilian international said 'It's great to see Brazil and its carnivals celebrated in this way in Liverpool. The samba atmosphere will remind me of home and I'm sure Brazilica will be a huge success'.
In the build up to the festival; Liverpool Carnival Company will hold a series of classes, workshops, community & youth events and rehearsals that the whole community can get involved in, offering weeks of festival fun to those who'd like to get involved! As with the Rio de Janeiro carnival in Brazil, the aim of the Liverpool's Carnival is to build jobs and industries in addition to educating the community for collective benefit. It's a cultural catalyst to bring everyone together. More information on getting involved will be available within the coming weeks and those interested are asked to visit www.brazilicafestival.com
BRAZILICA itself will comprise three exciting days of fiesta:
On Friday 15th July Liverpool city centre's shops and bars will play host to the 'Samba in the City' event, a colourful taster of the carnival, to get Liverpool in the mood to party.
Saturday 16th July will see the city come to life 'Latin style' with Brazilian and South American inspired activities taking place around Liverpool throughout the day including a FREE all day South American street party, which will see open dance classes, music sessions, street football demonstrations and workshops taking place, with Brazilian food, drink and fun for all the family available throughout the day.
The carnival steps up a gear in the evening as Liverpool's streets are set ablaze with colour and the carnival parade of over 1,000 people makes its way to the festival site, winding through the city centre streets, whilst the Brazilian bands and DJs take to the stage for the party to begin! Festivities will continue well into the evening finishing with an exciting after part event at a city centre club.
Wind down your weekend with Samba Sunday on 17th July as the carnival gets cultural with sports, film and artistic events taking place across the city.
The anticipation is starting already as organisers recently confirmed that Brazilian Samba Group Nene de Vila Matilde will be flying in from Sao Paulo especially for the event. They'll be performing alongside acclaimed UK Samba Group Paraiso School of Samba and local groups including Liverpool Samba School and Batala Liverpool. A full list of performers will be released shortly.
Roger Morris, festival producer at Liverpool Carnival Company said 'Since we started in 2008, the Liverpool Carnival has continued to grow and we're looking forward to our biggest year ever with BRAZILICA in 2011. It's so exciting to think that we now have Britain's biggest Brazilian carnival on our hands! The festival is going to be immense and I hope that the people of Liverpool will come along and join in, there will be so much to do, it's going to be sambatastic!'
With the Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, Brazil is a country that is in prime position on the World's stage and as Liverpool's love of all things Brazilian continues to grow with a plethora of bars, restaurants, dance and sporting events popping up around the city the links and similarities between Liverpool and Brazil are becoming ever more clear. Our mutual love of sport, celebrated footballing histories and strong sense of community spirit mean that we have a lot in common, BRAZILICA promises to capture those similarities and the Latin Fever that is sweeping the city in a spectacular fashion, so get BRAZILICA 2011 (15 - 17 July) in your diaries and get ready to party with Liverpool Carnival Company.

Yasmin Levy + Melingo
Wednesday 6 April 7.30pm
Barbican Hall
Silk Street EC2Y 8DS
020 7638 8891
£22/£18/£12
The star singer returns to London with her electrifying Ladino songs and smouldering flamenco, performing tracks from her latest release Sentir. In Yasmin Levy’s music there is a tension between the purity of Ladino (the Judeo-Spanish music) and the fiery heart of flamenco. As she explains ’There’s a very traditional way of singing Ladino. I learnt it…listening to women singing and it’s beautiful, but I missed the passion. Flamenco is nothing but passion.’ In her latest album Sentir, produced by the acclaimed Javier Limón (who has worked previously with the likes of Portuguese fado star Mariza), she has found a vision that integrates these musical directions.
“ The next world music superstar” THE GUARDIAN****
Support comes from the extraordinary Melingo, according to The Independent he is “the man who’s making tango seriously cool” but it’s also his experiments in the rebetika of his Thessalonikan Jewish ancestors that make him am interesting foil for Yasmin Levy.
Muchachito with Santos de Veracruz
Friday 8 April Doors 7pm
Cargo
83 Rivington Street EC2A 3AY
08444 771 000
£15 in advance
UK Debut for Muchachito the Spanish composer and singer whose intimate but energetic mix of music and monologues has taken him from playing on the streets to filling bull rings with his band Bombo Infierno. Tonight Muchachito appears in something close to his original street material format, a one-man-band Rumboxing – at the point where rumba and swing meet hand to hand combat Oh, and he’s bringing his painter Santos de Veracruz with him to create some old school art onstage. An intimate evening of improvisation and a broad canvas. Cut faster Old Master.
Ojos de Brujo + Depedro
Friday 15 April 7.30pm
Barbican Hall
Silk Street EC2Y 8DS
020 7638 8891
£22/£18/£12
Ojos de Brujo, from Barcelona, fuse flamenco’s driving rhythms with hip-hop, funk, punk and other stray sounds snatched from the Barcelona street.
The group calls this musical mashup ‘Jip Jop Flamenkillo’, a sound that catapults flamenco into the 21st century without losing any of the power or passion of the music’s roots.
Anyone who’s heard the Gypsy Kings’ brand of rumba catalana - which married traditional flamenco guitars to fiery Latin percussion - will recognize Ojos as the latest installment in flamenco’s inclusive ida y vuelta (or ‘go and return’) tradition of assimilating New World sounds into the repertoire.
Depedro is the nom de music of Spanish guitarist-singer-songwriter Jairo Zavala, sideman for Calexico, as well as Andrew Bird. His second album for National Geographic Nubes De Papel (Paper Clouds) is just out and was produced (as was his debut “Depedro”), by Calexico’s Joey Burns with other Calexico members sitting in on the sessions.

+ Pollito Boogaloo
Sunday 17 April Doors 7pm
Koko
1A Camden High Street NW1 7JE
0844 847 2258
£15 in advance
A special La Linea sampler night of artists playing with the unstoppable, loping cumbia beat that is rattling the ribcages of a continent’s youth from Buenos Aires to Mexico City.
Headliner’s Mexican Institute of Sound make their UK debut “Cutting the high-octane pace from dance with energetically proud Mexican flavours is a fierce combination” Clash. Cumbia is just one ingredient but its flavour rubs off on everything else in the mix.
“ Nuts, quite frankly, and probably the most fun you can have without removing your poncho.” The Word
“Can’t stop listening to his frazzled mariachi remake of The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony’. It’s Amazing” Dazed & Confused
Buenos Aires’ own Axel Krygier and his band pop some twisted digital cumbia into their mix “...like a llama on speed...unashamedly, wonderfully weird stuff” Songlines
And kicking of the night is the defiantly Old School Cumbia of Pollito Boogaloo led by Colombia’s Rafael Berrio playing live in the style of classic 60s cumbia, vallenato and puya and mixing in a little dub proving that in cumbia to know where you are at you truly have to hear where you are from.
A fun packed welcome to the wild extremes of cumbia.
Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club®
Featuring Omara Portuondo
Tuesday 19 April 7.30pm
Royal Albert Hall
Kensington Gore SW7 2AP
020 7589 8212
£37.50 - £22.50
Following a series of hugely successful performances in recent years, the twelve-piece Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club® which features a number of Buena Vista Social Club alumni make their eagerly awaited return to Europe.
This Cuban musicians’ collective has played together for over half a century. Stylistically, they span the entire spectrum of Afro-Cuban music. Deliciously slow bolero ballads and majestic danzones feature the swell of strings, while background vocals conveying messages of romance hide behind arrestingly beautiful melodies.
Buena Vista Social Club’s most influential style is the exuberant, polyrhythmic music known as son, which gave birth to both Mambo and Salsa. These upbeat numbers are full of infectious guitar licks, multilayered Afro-Cuban rhythms, soaring vocal melodies, and brash, Big Band-style horn parts.
Joining this new and expanded lineup of Cuban players is vocalist Omara Portuondo, a member of the original Buena Vista Social Club, whose 2008 recording Gracias (World Village / Montuno) won a Latin Grammy and scored a Grammy nomination. The show features an interesting contrast as young vocalist Idania Valdes, who came to prominence in the last year as the singing voice of Rita in the animated film Chico & Rita, shares the stage with Omara.

Friday 4th March - Monday 7th March. 10am - 6pm each day. Accommodation available on Thursday evening.
This is a 4-day residential sabar drum & dance workshop. Sabar drumming is a style from Northern Senegal and is very fast, energetic and loud. Drums are played with stick and hand and dancing is not too dissimilar to Guinean dance to the layman, but very different to the expert practitioner. It will be structured as a series of one-day workshops, so that if you can't do all four days, then you can do one or more days.
Teachers
The teaching will be provided by our regular sabar drum & dance teachers
Batch Gueye
Karim M'Baye
Diene Sagna
Awa Goudiaby
Amdy Ngom

Accommodation and evening meals can be provided and the whole event will cost no more than £190 with food and accommodation included, but the costing structure is flexible in case you don't want to use the accommodation provided or if you don't want to share the communal evening meals.

Sat & Sun £35 per day for drum & dance workshops
You can do just drumming, just dancing or both.
Accommodation
£9 per person per night for single/double rooms
£7 per person per night for dormitory rooms
Accommodation will be a mixture of 1 and 2-person bedrooms, plus larger dormitories, so no sharing if you don't want to do so. Single rooms and twin rooms will be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, so get your reservation in early.
There are also larger rooms for 6 or 8 sharing, so if you don't want to share, book early.
