The Afro-Latin Lounge
Workshop series: Advance in Rhythm – level 3
Tutors: Dave Pattman, Ravin ‘Raz’ Jayasuriya & Vicky Jassey
Dates: 25th to 29th May 2011
Course type: Residential
Hours of study: 27
Daytime sessions will focus on learning new material. Evening sessions will be set aside for students to play through what they’ve learnt during the day in a setting created to give participants a chance to engage in an informal environment that is closer to a Cuban Tambor or Rumba.
BATA
We’ll be working on a number of Bata toques with an in-depth study into the language for each drum. The study will include learning long sequences of songs that require linking several different toques together.
RUMBA
We’ll be working on Guaguancó, Yambú and Columbia using a mixture of conga drums and cajones (boxes). We’ll develop language for each of the drum parts including accompanying songs and quinto soloing.
Instruments
Please bring 1 or 2 congas and any bata drums you have. If you’d like to borrow instruments from OVM for the workshop please ring us and reserve it well in advance.
Schedule
Arrive from 6 pm on Wednesday. The workshop ends at on Sunday after lunch.
Participants need to depart by 4 pm. Full details will be sent on registration.
