Ballet Nimba Unwrapped!
LONDON 8TH OCTOBER 2011 *** BRISTOL 9TH OCTOBER 2011
Come and dance with 3 core members of Ballet Nimba, and discover the different styles, influences, and the dynamic African Dance techniques that combined make this African Dance Theatre company stand out from the crowd.
Ballet Nimba Unwrapped will offer all dance-enthusiasts -from beginner to Professional - an exclusive opportunity to dance with the Artistic Director of Ballet Nimba, Idrissa Camara, as well as two of Nimba's most influential dancers: Awa Goudiaby and Vanessa Guevara. Live music will be provided by professional drummers.
There will be three sessions, each lasting an hour and a half, and within each class we will have the chance to see and try out the distinctive style of the teacher , as they demonstrate how their dance background has made them the acclaimed dancers that they are today.
We will dance sabar with Awa Goudiaby, contemporary -inspired Guinean dance with Vanessa Guevara, and traditonal and original Guinean choreographies with Idrissa Camara.
Particpants will also be treated to an exclusive performance of Ballet Nimba's repertoire by the three artists, and then have the opportunity to dance it themselves, as Idrisa will teach a short part of this to the students.
Biographies.
Idrissa Camara:
An outstanding dance artist and musician from Guinea Conakry. He has been principle choreographer with some of the leading dance and music companies in West Africa such as Ballets Africains in Ziguinchor and Dakar, and the Ballet Bougarabou. Since arriving in the UK he’s performed widely with West African ensembles as well as touring with the intercultural, intergenerational carnival show "Dragon" and now with a lead role in the fabulous "Magick". With the support of the Arts Council and ADAD he founded Ballet Nimba. Idrissa is a real joy to watch and an inspiration for many.As a teacher, his knowledge of Guinean dance is unrivalled, and in his classes, music and song and explanation of the dance's origin, all help to accelerate the students' learning.
Awa Goudiaby:
Awa Goudiaby is from Ziguinchor, Casamance. She grew up in Dakar and became part of Ballet Fambody, the second ballet of the Ballet National de Senegal. She was picked as a dancer for AfrikaAfrika! and came to tour around Europe for several years. She now lives in the UK and teaches and performs regularly around the country. You may have seen her spectacular performances at various events including African Beats Camp, African Drum Village, or with Ballet Nimba. Her graceful and cheeky style of dance and clear and confident teaching manner never fails to impress.
Vanessa Guevara:
Vanessa grew up studying Ballet, contemporary, Jazz and other forms of dance, but after being introduced to African dance decided to specialize in this exciting, colourful form of dance; a decision that would take her all over the world. After living in Africa, training with some of the most important African Dance teachers and choreographers, Vanessa went on to further her studies in New York and San Francisco. As well as dancing with Ballet Nimba she dances with Alesanrda Seutin's fantastic Vocab Dance. She is a patient and thorough teacher with a talent for focusing on the development of the individual, increasing their physical capacities and stamina, while they are learning new forms of movement .
