CALL FOR PROPOSALS NOW EXTENDED TO WED 30TH NOV 2011

INVITATION

We invite academics and performance practitioners to debate, develop, contest and celebrate the relationships between culture, industry and performance - now, in the past, and in possible futures. Proposals are especially welcome in alignment with one or more of the six areas summarised below. For the full call go to www.psi18.org

Value and efficacy

For instance: What are the synergies and contradictions between economic and cultural value in the field of performance? How can these be understood in terms of performance? Can we distinguish intrinsic from instrumental value?

Commercial and amateur

For instance: How are the commercial stage and amateur stage being addressed from within the performance studies frame?

Cultural articulations

For instance: How has performance addressed and how is it addressing the various alienations, needs, gains and negotiations associated with economic, cultural and refugee migration?

Relations and determinations

For instance: How do economic and cultural drivers determine the relationship between the academy and performance practice beyond its walls?

Training, labour and innovation

For instance: What are the relationships between and within the academic and industrial spheres in the training of professionals, including performers, directors, scenic artists and technicians? What is the present and future of vocational performer training conducted outside educational systems - e.g. within the family?

Economy / Ecology

For instance: How has, does and might performance engage with concerns around environmental change and ecological impact? How might a performative focus on landscape, locality or habitus enable us to

rethink the relationship of the personal, the economic, the political

and the ecological?

The Afro-Latin Lounge

2012 gets off to a fiery start at Sadler's Wells with the return of the annual Flamenco Festival. A firm fixture in London's dance calendar, this year's festival promises a stellar line-up showcasing the extraordinary range of this dynamic dance form.

Highlights include world famous choreographer Rafael Amargo's Poet in New York and the return of Antonio Gades Company presenting the late choreographer's final work Fuenteovejuna. Don't forget with the multibuy you can get 20% off when you book for two or more shows.

South Africa's multi-award winning music and dance show "breezes into the West End like a breath of fresh air" (The Guardian) this February for a strictly limited three week run.
Beautiful tribal song, joyful gospel music and the pounding nightclub-sound of Kwaito accompany some of the most jubilant and energetic dancing you're likely to see this year - from the ritualistic moves of the Venda Snake Dancers to the intricate steps of gumboot dancing, born from the tough working conditions of South African gold miners. UMOJA's 30-strong cast of singers, dancers and musicians celebrate South Africa's rich cultural legacy in an exhilarating show that is guaranteed to banish the winter blues.

Come on Ladies....

It's been a long, cold winter.... Let's get the blood circulating again....
Aida Diop and Eva Goudiaby are holding an afternoon of workshops that will have your whole body smiling again!
You may or may not be a fan of belly dancing, but one thing most people agree on is that it is a very liberating, and sensual dance performed by women, and largely, taught by women... Well, let's go South of the Sahara and and place those same virtues in the region of Senegal......SABAR!!!!!!!!!!!! A beautifully, dynamic and joyful dance, where the natural movements of the female body are appreciated and accentuated.. whether you dance or not, as a woman, you will find your body 'fall' into this style quite naturally.... in all its splendour.
COME AND SEE!!!
We will also do the more familiar, and much-loved 'djembe' style of dance: Our teachers' knowledge of djembe dances and rhythms is unchallenged; and they generously share fresh movement vocabulary with their students; injecting newblood into the scene. COME AND DANCE WITH THEM !!!! You will not be disappointed!!!
Aida has taught at Danceworks, at Feedback 33, at Afro-Xplosion, at ADAD's Bloom Festival, holds a regular dance class at the SPACE, and recently performed with her students at Camden Rock. And everywhere she goes, she is invited back, and draws more people to her... if you don't know why, come and find out!

.
Top class dancer and choreographer, Papson is an endless source of creativity and energy. His style is a mix of traditional African dance
with modern elements. The new generation of African dance grown in urban spaces finds itself today on concert and theatre stages. Famous African artists ask him regularly to create choreographies for their video clips and shows: Tiken Jah Fakoly, Oumou Sangaré, Césaria Evora, Khaled, Shaft, Norma Claire, Aïcha Koni, Tissénifo, Savane Allah, Samba Oussou, Amadou e Mariam and Rokia Troare. As a child, he was called the father of the sound as he was always running and looking for the sounds of the Djembedrum. Papson participated on his first dance contest at the age of 5 years. Later his parents didn’t want him to become a dancer, so he left his family to follow his dream. His journey took him through several African countries and national ballets to Paris. Before he settled down in Paris he became the choreographer of the Ivory Dance company and latter the assistant choreographer of George Momboye (AfriKa Afrika). Since 2003 he works as a freelance choreographer and dancer. In 2009 he created his first Afro contemporary Dance Theatre “ Mon Histoire “.
