Dance Como No has been working with dance from Cuba since 1999 and 2000 when we presented the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional at the Royal Festival Hall and at Sadler’s Wells.
Como No began working with the national contemporary dance company Danza Contemporánea de Cuba in 2003 when it provided the core dance company for Carlos Acosta’s Tocororo. Our relationship with the company has continued to develop, in 2006 Como No commissioned the first work by the company’s resident choreographer George Céspedes, Peso de Una Isla, and we now work closely with Danza Contemporánea on its international presentations. Danza Contemporanea is on tour in Italy, Spain, France, UK and Germany in 2012.
Como No co-produced, with Sadler’s Wells, the first London performances for almost twenty years by the Ballet Nacional de Cuba 2006 and produced the UK tour by the company in 2010. We continue to work closely with the Ballet Nacional.
Danza Contemporanea de CubaSombrisa / Carmen?! / Mambo 3XXI Tue 29 May - Fri 1 June
Sadler's Wells, London
Danza Contemporanea de Cuba received overwhelming acclaim for their first ever major UK tour in 2010. The fresh, joyous and passionate programme of work featured the outstanding Mambo 3XX1, created by resident choreographer and dancer George Céspedes and nominated for both and Olivier and TMA award for his outstanding contribution to dance.
This internationally renowned company return in spring 2012 with a programme including the world premiere of a piece by award-winning choreographer and influencer of modern dance Itzik Galili, and another chance to experience the incredible Mambo 3XX1.
Danza Contemporanea de Cuba have for 50 years produced dancers of the highest level with a style evoking the sensual, mystical and raw heart of Cuban spirit. Collaborations with international leaders in dance have combined with the Afro Caribbean and Spanish fusions to produce an electrifying, evocative and distinctly unique expression of all that is Cuban.
“An exotic hybrid of contemporary, classical and Caribbean styles.”
“At moments, Céspedes reminds you of the young Twyla Tharp in the fanatical, joyous precision with which he moves his dancers through a frenzy of kicking legs, shimmying ¬shoulders, clicking fingers and jiving arms. Brilliant.”
The Guardian
“Drop-dead gorgeous, performed in such perfect synch, and with such sexy intensity, that you can’t tear your eyes away.”
“Whatever they’re dancing, you’ll find them a very welcome ray of tropical sunshine.”
The Telegraph

On Saturday 23rd June, 12- 3pm (please note change of time) Gaspard Zamble will be giving a 3 hour workshop in dances from Ivory Coast at the beautiful Siobhan Davies studies, South London. He will be accompanied by Odartey, a respected drummer amongst those 'in the know'.
This is a rare opportunity to expand your knowledge of West African dance and rhythms beyond the more familiar contenders and have fun exploring new movement vocabulary, whilst dancing to new drumming language.
BIOG
Gaspard Zamble is the founder and director of Zamble African Dance Company. He is a highly skilled dance practitioner with over 17 years’ professional experience teaching, choreographing and performing traditional African dance.
His arrival in London in 1992 ushered in a new and dynamic era for British African dance. Drawing on a tradition largely unknown in this country, Gaspard’s performances proved a revelation to audiences. The high-octane virtuosity of Ivoirian dance, especially that of the Gouro people from which Gaspard hails, was unlike anything seen in the UK before.
Career highlights to date include the following:
*Ten years with the National Ballet of the Ivory Coast
*Three years as member of Adzido Pan African Dance Company
* Performed at WOMAD Festival and MOBO Awards
* Performer at Millenium Dome Opening Ceremony in 2000
*Ran open access adult dance class at The Place successfully for over five years
Gaspard will be teaching some of the regional dances of the Ivory Coast.

Production: Break-in? Point
Date: 7 June 2012
Time: 12:30 pm/Lunch Time
You are cordially invited to us for a work-in-progress lunch time sharing. Renowned dance artist De-Napoli Clarke (RJC Dance) and theoretical physicist Jiannis K. Pachos (Department of Physics and Astrology, University of Leeds) join forces under the direction of arts facilitator Carol Marie Webster (School of Sociology and Social Policy - CIGS, University of Leeds)to explore the relation of movement and science through the human catoptron. Break-in? Point (breaking point) is the critical point at which physical, mental, or emotional strength gives way under stress causing structural degeneration: The performance is a journey that explores the break through to what lies beyond. The running time of the performance is 30 minutes; audience is invited to stay for a post-performance discussion. This lunch time meeting of arts and science is sponsored by the department of physics and astronomy and stage@Leeds. For reservations please email breakinpoint36@yahoo.co.uk.
Please pass the word forward widely.
