Les Commandos Percu by Daniel Saint Leger
Les Commandos Percu by Kev Ryan
On The Night Shift will set the skies alight with a blaze of light and fireworks when it launches the London 2012 Festival on June 21. The show will follow the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the Lake District town, with celebrations beginning on The Glebe from 6pm.
Those of you who saw Les Commandos Percu at Platt Fields Park a few years ago need no introduction to these French wizards of percussion and pyrotechnics but for the first time Commandos Percu will perform with a group of specially-selected artists from the UK which will take their performance to a new level.
The technically-complex show combines pyrotechnics, music and dance and critics are already tipping the event as one of the must-see highlights of the festival, which is designed to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Commandos Percu artistic director Raymond Gabriel says: “From the first encounters between the French and British artists something remarkable happened. There is a real feeling that we are creating something very powerful.”
Each musician will play a unique instrument that has been specially made for the show. All of the drums have been hand-crafted by local French artisans using several kinds of tight skins fixed on flat sounding boards to create their own individual sound.
The seven dancers – one of whom is a founder member of award-winning STOMP - will perform in perfect harmony with the music and fireworks. They will be wearing costumes designed by students from The University of Central Lancashire.
The will be another opportunity to see the show on September 9 as part of the finale of the Preston Guild.

Black History Month 2012: Celebration
Celebrating our heritage through film, literature, music, performance, exhibitions and sport
The theme for this year's Black History Month programme is 'Celebration'. With the past and upcoming events of the year it was a natural development to extend the celebrations in to October.
As always we look to create an engaging and enjoyable programme of events, and the way in which we achieve this is by working with you, and this year is no different. So if you would like to join us in creating another successful programme, then please take advantage of the opportunities below:
Grants programme
Our annual grants programme is now open for applicants to submit event/project proposals. <
Tender brief
We are looking for organisation, or organisations working in partnership, to deliver a couple of events under a specific topic. This is slightly different from the standard grant application, but the tender also provides a grant to deliver this project. For more information on what is required, please see the tender brief attached. The closing date for applications is Friday 6 July 2012, 5pm. Applications received after this date will not be assessed.

Akosua’s Contemporary African dance (CAD) draws from Africa 's diverse movement styles, culture, customary behaviour and music. Her classes introduce and support participants to develop some of the technical and aesthetic values that shape African dance forms. The dancer develops the basic skills of isolations, co-ordination and rhythmic footwork. An emphasis is placed on movement dynamics and the precise relationship between body parts and the energy of polyrhythmic African drumming.
The class begins with a warm up. It continues with centre exercises and travelling phases before building physical and interpretative skills through a dance combination in which the dancer displays both freedom and control.
