Hi,

I am writing to announce that we have officially EXTENDED the deadline for completed applications to be considered for our online brochure; Re-SiTE

Re-SiTE is an online brochure dedicated to promoting UK based professional dance performance works ready for touring for outdoors, sited or site-specific contexts.

At Dance Initiative Greater Manchester we specialise in developing dance for the outdoors and in unusual spaces, we want to break boundaries and offer new experiences both to artists and audiences.

We can help to get your dance work to the audiences it deserves, as we build an important bridge between artists/companies and promoters/festivals etc.

This opportunity is completely FREE and the E-brochure will be distributed to promoters and outdoor festivals as well as through our extensive mailing lists, and published online via both our website and host sites.

We have extended the deadline for applications as we know there were a lot of dance works made for the outdoors due to it being the Olympic year, and we want to ensure that the best representation of these is included in Re-SiTE. So if you missed it the first time get on our website and download an application form from Events & Projects > Re-SiTE - Online Brochure or email us and we can send you a copy.

The amended deadline is now MONDAY 29TH OCTOBER at 5pm

We look forward to hearing from you!

We would be greatful if you could circulate this opportunity to your networks and/or pass on directly to anybody you feel might be interested

Fantastic End to a Fantastic Summer for London 2012!
ThamesFestival2012_095
Well, what a summer that was! The Olympic and Paralympics Games were spectacular and the London 2012 Festival equally so. It kicked off with ‘All the Bells’ and one jaw-dropping opening ceremony, and ended for us in true celebratory style at our favourite; the Mayors Thames Festival Night Carnival. We saw many of you at our various events over the summer, and to keep that London 2012 feel good factor going into autumn, here’s a re-cap on our last two events of the 2012 summer and what we’ve got in store to come...
Don’t forget you can also keep track of Mandinga goings-on via Facebook and Twitter. Click the buttons below to be directed to our pages.

Rio Carnival Quest, Paralympics Torch Event, Bath
Produced by ArtReach, and funded by Bath and North East Somerset Council, Mandinga helped to deliver a special carnival project in Bath this summer – Rio Carnival Quest. Throughout the summer holidays over 100 local participants worked with Mandinga as well as experienced local artists to design, make and animate Brazilian style costumes, and learn the rhythms and music of samba and Rio.
Co-Artistic Director Charles Beauchamp and choreographer, Manuela Benini, visited Bath in July to deliver a series of carnival costume and dance workshops at Gateway Community Centre in Bath, and 3 other community locations in outlying Peasedown, Keynsham and Radstock. Participants and local artists created costumes for the ‘Making a Point’ section, ‘ Sexy Cows’, ‘Raging Fire’ and ‘Garden of Delights’ , using specialist techniques such as silk dyeing and working with plasterzote foams, and the results were outstanding!
The workshop activities culminated in a processional performance, as part of the Paralympics Flame Festival in Bath city centre on Saturday 25 August. The costumed procession was led by the Paralympics Flame and joined by the local Jamma de Samba band. The beautiful flame costumes (pictured below) were produced by participants from Action on Hearing Loss and they took the lead of the procession behind the Paralympics flame. And bringing up the rear in elaborately decorated bikes and trikes (pictured below) were individuals from the all inclusive cycling group Wheels for All.

This exciting project was to herald the commencement of the Paralympics and celebrated the start of a new Olympic journey – the Rio Cultural Olympiad leading to summer 2016 in Brazil.
Chimera II at the Mayors Thames Night Carnival
DSCN1416 DSCN1408
Over the summer months frenetic activity took place throughout the Mandinga studios. With new volunteers and seasoned artists alike using all available space, both indoors and out, to finalise new costumes for the Mayors Thames Festival Night Carnival. From design and realisation, costume and puppetry making, to float building and rehearsals there was a feast for the eyes for any visitor who happened to call by. In the middle of all this could be found Co-Artistic Director, Julieta Rubio, beavering away whilst overseeing the production of the new designs. (Julieta pictured above, and volunteers Nicky, Lara and Luke)

And what an excellent time we had at this, our 15th year, at the Mayors Thames Festival Night Carnival. We presented the second and final year of our project Chimera, which proved to be quite the milestone for Mandinga in terms of artistic development and float design.
ThamesFestival2012_305 ThamesFestival2012_273
Two new costume sections were unveiled and added to the existing sections created for Chimera I in 2011. The first of these was a section of silk flames created specifically for Latin American community youth dance group Gotitas de Sabor. And the second was a section of puppeteers and their zebra-women dance partners. The puppets lead their human partners on a waltz along the parade route, interacting with the crowd and causing mischief. We were also joined again by the Latin American Youth Forum, who, much by popular demand, returned to perform with us in the frog costumes from Chimera I. A true crowd pleaser, the LAYF young people stole the show again.
ThamesFestival2012_248 ThamesFestival2012_297
The most important achievement for us at this year’s carnival was the transformation of our humble milk float into not only a moving stage for the musicians and a rig for stage lighting, but a platform for moving digital imagery. During the course of two years Co-Artistic Director Charles Beauchamp has been working closely with digital projectionists and lighting designers Brian Curson and Robyn Stuart (Alkamie) in designing projection screens to fit to each side of the milk float. 2012 was the trial year for this elaborate idea and we showcased the first year of design at the Night Carnival, as a zebra-tarantula strolled along the riverside!
This is an exciting development for us; expect to see more of this over the next few years as we further explore digital imagery, interactivity and story-telling through these screens.
East 15 Acting School Students perform in Chimera II
ThamesFestival2012_164
We welcomed East 15 Acting School’s World Performance students as they joined us at the Thames Festival Night Carnival in our Haitian costumes newly created for this year.
The costumes, commissioned by ArtReach for Night of Festivals 2012, are based on Haitian voodoo traditions, and demand an energetic group – and this lot certainly did have the energy for it! Throughout August the seven second year students from East 15’s World Performance course, based in Southend-on Sea, rehearsed Haitian choreography in preparation for the Thames festival this weekend. The group undertook physically demanding workshops with choreographer Mariana Whitehouse in traditional Haitian gaga dance to bring our costumes to life, heading up our parade, at the night carnival last month. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the group perform on parade and look forward to working with them again in the future.
New 2013-14 project: Animal Farm
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”
Animal Farm, George Orwell
We are currently embarked on our new two year project, inspired by the classic tale Animal Farm by George Orwell, first published in 1945. Broadly it is a satire on totalitarian governments in their many guises, though Orwell composed the book to serve as a cautionary tale about Stalinism.
Mandinga Arts has always had a fascination with animals, real and imaginary. Animal Farm offers us challenges that go well beyond simply creating new beasts; it is the multi layered aspect of the story that inspires. How to create a carnival performance which remains faithful to this sinister fairy tale yet allows freedom to interpret, edit and contemporise – that is our challenge. From heroes and villains, victims and tyrants, fools and visionaries, dramatic narrative, transforming relationships, revolution and terror, there is food for thought here to explore for the next decade let alone the two years envisaged.
Keep a look out for a first glimpse of initial designs and ideas in our next quarterly newsletter in the New Year.
Archive and Administration Internship Opportunity
We’re recruiting! Our 3 monthly rolling internship placement is back, following our extended placement with Elspeth Lewis Taylor from the University of Surrey, and this time we’re after an Archive and Administration Assistant. The successful candidate will join us both here in the Mandinga office to build knowledge and gain experience in Arts Administration, and also at our new storage warehouse in Peckham, to assist in the archiving and cataloguing of Mandinga’s extensive collection of costumes and artefacts.
Applications close 12 noon on Monday 12th November 2012 and the placement commences Tuesday 20th November until week commencing 18th February 2013.

FinalPoster_Artwork_A3
This wonderful poster was everywhere leading up to the Mayors Thames Festival this year. And you may have recognised our fabulous performer Sheila Ruiz in Mandinga’s ‘Orchid’ costume as you walked past it in the underground! This year Mandinga were approached to be ‘the face’ of the festivals marketing campaign...and we think Sheila did a marvellous job don’t you?!

The first London show in three years for El Sonero Mayor, the truly great Venezuelan salsa singer and bandleader and London’s salsa event of the autumn. Oscar D’Leon, “El Leon de la Salsa”, was born in the Caracas’ neighbourhood of Etamin where he began to show interest in percussion instruments and to sing at social activities as a young child. His capacity to improvise, the texture of his voice and his intense love for the music, make Oscar D’Leon a born ‘sonero’ in the best Latin tradition.
Oscar was influenced by the great masters of Cuban music, especially by ‘soneros’, Beny More and La Sonora Mantacera. His other influences come from the New York sound of the 60′s, particularly Eddie Palmieri and the Fania generation. Besides being a great sonero, Oscar D’Leon is an extraordinary showman, an entertainer who takes charge of the stage and who moves with the ease of a professional dancer.

Oscar D’Leon has recorded more than 50 albums, gained many gold discs, and received numerous award and honors. In November 2007 his album Fuzionando won the Latin Grammy Awards as best Contemporary Tropical album.

Oscar’s set is framed by support from a galactic line-up of salsa djs playing on one of London’s biggest dancefloors.

Live at Electric Brixton in London, Thursday 18th October

El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico 50th Anniversary
At Electric Brixton, Town Hall Parade, London, SW2 1RJ
El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, commonly known as El Gran Combo, is a Puerto Rican Salsa music orchestra based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Currently (2012) celebrating its 50th anniversary, it is Puerto Rico's most successful musical group, and is considered "the most popular Salsa group that has ever existed". The group received the moniker La Universidad de la Salsa (The University of Salsa) in Colombia, due to the sheer number of famous salsa musicians and singers who developed their careers with it, who started with the group (particularly Andy Montañez), or who were occasionally backed up by the band (including Celia Cruz, Héctor Lavoe and La India).
The Salsa Orchestra was founded in May 1962, by Rafael Ithier. Ithier is still nominally its musical director, and he and saxophonist Eddie "La Bala" Pérez are the only remaining members from the band's original lineup. As of 2010, Willie Sotelo, who joined the group in 2006 as pianist, has become the band's de facto musical director on tours, with Ithier conducting the group and playing occasionally in select live performances. They are still actively performing after 50 years together. The group is scheduled to celebrate its 50th anniversary on 18 October 2012 at the Electric Brixton London. The group started its celebration with a grand world tour that will take them to five continents.
