To all our readers: we hope you’ve had a fantastic summer and have been able to revel in some carnival and outdoor festivals and events. To all our new readers: a warm welcome to the world of Mandinga! This summer has certainly been a busy one for us here, we have been flitting all over the UK performing in Margate, the Isle of Wight, Nottingham, Lincolnshire and also held workshops in Cardiff... and after all of that, we are still in the midst of some exciting projects, preparing for Bridgewater Carnival and Day of the Dead events at the Horniman Museum next month. So please, sit back, relax and let us fill you in on our summer and some exciting new dates for your diary.

Don’t forget to keep up to date with Mandinga goings-on on Twitter and Facebook. And you can now watch videos of Mandinga Arts on Vimeo.
Mandinga joined forces with The Great British Carnival: a project that took off the ground earlier this year led by Artaha Productions. The project’s main intention is to bring together some of the leading carnival artists representing Brazilian, Caribbean and indigenous British carnival traditions. This summer, the GBC collective made a debut appearance at Margate Carnival but were also a central player at the annual Mayor’s Thames Festival in London.
Mandinga, as a recent partner of the Great British Carnival, escorted a coach load of colourful characters to Kent’s sunny seaside town on Sunday 4th August, including a vibrant group of Carmen Mirandas along with some very mischievous Monkeys and Sexy Cows. As always, the Mandinga party took Margate by storm, along with carnival groups Shademakers and Tropical Isles, spurring many locals to get up and dance along with us! Mandinga designed and decorated the Great British Carnival truck that processed with us at Margate, with samba band Rhythms of the City on board.
For more photos of us at Margate click here to visit our Facebook Album and here for photos on the Great British Carnival’s Facebook page.
As for GBC at Thames Festival, Co-Artistic Director, Charles, helped deck the float with a tropical assortment of zebras, fruit platters, lion heads, lizards and many more to turn it into a mobile music stage for GBC performances programmed in Bernie Spain Gardens. Teresa Askew, Creative Director of Great British Carnival said, “The decor was so colourful and crazy! It really came alive in the evening, when it turned into this beautiful yet intense and vibrant proscenium arch for the performances onstage.” The float was truly a centrepiece of the festival being described as a “glittering jewel in the night.” Askew also commented that “Mandinga's work on [the float] has been pivotal in the success of the project: super-bright, vibrant and sending out the message, this is Great British Carnival loud and clear."
And the Great British Carnival continues to tour the UK even as we descend into autumn. Check out our ‘Look Out For...’ section for more information.
To round up an authentic British summer, we here at Mandinga put on our wellies and headed to the Isle of Wight this September to perform in HMS Bestival’s carnival parade. Our previous intern, Jilly Hurden took on the exciting role of Production Manager for the weekend, bringing with her some of Mandinga’s friends; previous intern Naomi Toms, makeup artist Andrea Greenwood and previous artistic assistant and puppeteer Amber Donovan – not to mention scooping up quite a handful of enthusiastic festival goers whilst on site. In keeping with Bestival’s nautical theme, Mandinga performers stunned revellers with a vivid array of costumes from our Rivers of Silk collection; the aquatic procession featuring colourful fish, giant seahorses and other exotic sea creatures truly set alight Bestival’s muddy fields.
The World Stage Design Festival 2013 took place this September in Cardiff, Wales. Being the first of its kind, the festival explored the relationship between performance and design from the world of theatre, opera and dance. WSD was created to challenge the commonly perceived boundaries between these different artistic realms, raising awareness of the central role design has to play in many of today’s much loved theatrical and musical performances. The extensive programme of over 40 performances from 20 different countries attracted anyone from professionals to the ‘creatively curious.’ As part of the series, our Co-Artistic Director, Charles, travelled to Cardiff to represent Mandinga demonstrating to all, in a short presentation, how he and Julieta create their complex and elaborate puppets for street performance. The presentation was then followed by a workshop where participants were taken through the process of the creation of initial design concepts, cutting patterns and then assembling a puppet. The day ended on a high with a procession of Mandinga’s costumes through the festival site.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and am entranced with the carnival scene. I would absolutely love to work with Mandinga again.” Participant, WSD 2013
Alongside her studio work, Co – Artistic Director, Julieta Rubio, has been extending her creative knowledge while attending professional development workshops at Morley College:
Introduction to Pleating: techniques of pleating and the many ways it can transform fabric structure and texture.
Ruffs: hand painted organdie and organza with wire frames based on 16th century examples.
Flowers in Organdi: hand painted organdie, cutting and forming petals to create a variation of flowers.
Textiles Advanced Workshops: with a focus on many constructed and printed technique.
Julieta comments, “The knowledge gained in these workshops most often feed back into new design concepts for Mandinga costumes.”
As many of you may know already, this September Mandinga travelled to Nottingham to take part in our fourth Night of Festivals! Created by ArtReach, the festival celebrates the values of freedom and independence by bringing together an eclectic and exciting mix of live music, carnival arts, art installation, moving image and street theatre. However, unlike previous years, Night of Festivals is now touring! ... and will also be featuring in Boston, Lincolnshire this October and Slough and Leicester in 2014. To kick start this two year ‘roadshow’ Mandinga joined forces with our old friends City Arts in Nottingham to work with local community groups who volunteered to perform with us. The rehearsal weekend was great fun; we met a lively bunch of Nottingham folk – some seasoned performers who had been involved in previous Night of Festivals, and others who had joined us for the first time.
This year’s Night of Festivals Touring consists of a series of pop up carnivalesque performances from various carnival characters. Our Dance Co-ordinator, Mariana Whitehouse, conducted two full weekend workshops with our volunteers, teaching them not only the moves and rhythms of traditional Latino dance but also innovative ways to improvise and interact with the audience.
Once again Nottingham’s streets to came alive on the 13th and 14th of September. Mandinga characters, alongside Rhythms of the City, Paraiso School of Samba and Nottingham School of Samba dazzled onlookers in the city centre.
We’d like to send out a massive thank you to all our volunteers who performed with us, including those who were just passing by and came to join in on the action and get into costume! You all did a fantastic job and kept your spirits high despite the rain on Friday. We hope many of you will join us again in the future.
And it doesn’t stop there. Night of Festivals continues to tour until August 2014. The next, and final, stop for 2013 was Boston, Lincolnshire on the 12th and 13th October. We’ll tell you more about that in our next quarterly newsletter.
Brixton Come Together Festival
This September we donated a few of our costumes to Brixton Come Together Carnival. The parade took place through the centre of Brixton on the 22nd September as part of community festival, Brixton Come Together, which had a theme this year of human rights and water management. Carnival organiser Manuela Benini told us “The parade was fantastic! We now aim to fundraise to enable more local community involvement next year.”
Internship Programme
This October we bid farewell to our Project and Administration Assistant Jenny Gridley, who was with us from mid July until mid October. Jenny has been assisting with the planning and delivery of Night of Festivals Touring events, as well as organising Bestival, and ended her placement in style at Night of Festivals Touring in Boston on the 13th October.
We’re delighted to share that Jenny left Mandinga and went directly into paid employment – the very next day! Jenny is now working for Leeds City Council as a Project Support Officer in their Communications and Marketing team. Jenny’s long-term aims are to gain experience in Leeds before moving back to London to find work in the arts and cultural sector.
“I have absolutely loved my time at Mandinga. I feel that the experience I have gained is invaluable and has really provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge that I will take with me into future employment and the wider world in general.
I have now gone on to work as a Project Support Officer at Leeds City Council. My internship here has provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge and experience that I can carry forward into this role. Working closely with community groups at Mandinga has given me firsthand experience of being on the front line, and the importance of the arts in people’s lives. While working at the Council, I will remember this social “need” and try to address it whenever and wherever I can. I want to thank everyone I have met throughout this internship, I have loved every second!”
We now welcome Anna De Freitas, who joined us this month as Project and Administrative Assistant Intern and will be with us until mid-January 2014. Anna volunteers for the Southbank Centre and has previously worked with Iris Theatre as an assistant stage manager. Anna now wants to pursue a career in arts management, and is joining Mandinga to build her on her existing skills.
Great British Carnival: Bridgewater Carnival, Saturday 2nd November 2013
Mandinga’s first ever performance at Bridgewater Carnival will take place with the Great British Carnival collective next month! We’re so excited to take part in this age old and so unusual night carnival in Somerset. We’ll be designing and decorating the GBC truck again, as well as taking a select few costumes for local participants to wear in parade. Once again we’ll be joined by the fabulous Rhythms of the City.
Dance Around the World, Saturday 2nd – Sunday 3rd November 2013
Dance Around The World Festival happens on the 2nd and 3rd November 2013. It is an inter-generational, intercultural festival celebrating the music and dance of over fifty London cultural groups. An international double-bill of contemporary dance from Artistic Director Gail Parmel.
Delving deep into the unknown, Mana will take you on a journey. Feel the hairs on your neck stand up and a shiver down your spine as you encounter the force which resides within all animate and inanimate objects, the stuff of which magic is made.
Watch exceptional dancers express soul, energy and precision to a stunning backdrop of commissioned music and cutting-edge lighting design, with movement styles drawing from Afro-fusion, Martial Arts techniques, the essence of Flamenco and Ballet.
A Thousand Shepherds: Spanish choreographer Jose Agudo was inspired by 2 months in an Indian monastery. This piece is a celebration of discipline and dedication.
Mana: South African Choreographer Vincent Mantsoe will take you back to ancient times, evoking the spirit and earthy ambience of African dance and Shaman traditions. The word 'mana' is used in over 24 languages; it unifies beliefs, cultures and ages.
