Hidden Movement Book Launch

On the 30 October, Serendipity launched its new publication at an event at the Guildhall in Leicester . Hidden Movement: Contemporary Voices of Black British Dance is the legacy of a two day conference held as part of Let's Dance International Festival 2013, which is aimed to shed light on the untold personal stories, the trailblazers, struggles and successes of Black Dance in the UK, and in doing so preserve a piece of social history.

The launch was a great success, owed much in part to the generous support of keynote speakers David Bryan and Brenda Edwards MBE, and the fantastic atmosphere generated by the many contributors and guests in attendance.

During the course of the evening, the guests were treated to an excerpt of Head Vs. Heart, a visual delight of video and live dance choreographed by Keisha Grant. This was followed by a preview of Silent Aria. Emerging dancer Tara Lopez performed the beautiful piece, choreographed by Henri Oguike, which invigorated the enchanting musical score composed by Philip Herbert, who accompanied on piano alongside Phillip White on oboe.

Thanks must be extended to all those who worked to make both the publication and the launch a success. Hidden Movement: Contemporary Voices of Black British Dance is available to purchase on Amazon, Blackwell's and Waterstones.

November 29 – 13:30 – 14:30
Book via Event Brite
Creativity plays an important part in our economy, making up 10% of the UK’s exports. Yet it seems to be unquantifiable and devalued. We give thought leaders centre stage to share their overview of the challenges facing creativity in the UK, as well as their views on possible solutions and the future of the sector.
Speakers: Adam Graham of Weapon 7 and BIMA, Richard Russell of Arts Council England, and more speakers to be confirmed.

Talk 02 – Distribution, IP and the ‘free’ economy
November 29 – 15:00 – 16:00

Intellectual property was put in place to protect the written words of artists when the printing press was invented. Since then, the gap has widened with the speed at which technology has challenged our methodology of distributing content. This session will tackle the complexity of protecting your rights as an artist whilst allowing space for creative expression.
Speakers: Jon Webster of MMF, Shainul Kassam of Fortune Law and Prof. Andrew Murray of LSE.

Talk 03 – The Art of Funding: Legend versus Reality
November 29 – 16:30-17:30

Public funds available to the arts may be dwindling, but the options to raise funds have only increased with the rise of crowd-funding. This session aims to clear up the urban legends behind funding with real life examples underlining the risks, rewards and time investment to make that cash available to you.
Speakers: Philipp Figueroa (filmmaker and editor) of Sidekick Creatives, Alexis Kennedy of Fail Better Games, and John Leyden of Carbon Accountancy.

Talk 04 – The Artist’s (R)Evolution: A Look at Tomorrow’s Best Practice

Despite more artists becoming heavily dependent on grants and public funding, technology now enables creative professionals to reach their audiences and collaborators directly, with little to no cost. This talk investigates the opportunities available to artists in this fast-changing landscape, the meaning of success, the migration of funding, the devaluation of the arts and what you can do to balance promotion, creation, risk and money.
