The Afro-Latin Lounge

Greetings One and All,
Hope this finds you well.
To avoid any disappointment please note that the following event takes place at the V&A MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD in the Eastend of London http://www.museumofchildhood.org.uk/visit-us/getting-here
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE - SUPA HERO
Friday 7 February 2014, 18.30 - 21.45
V&A Museum of Childhood (MoC), Bethnal Green, London
@supaworldlive
Relive 70s Afro-centric London, Africa, Caribbean and the US in one P-Funky Friday Nite Party of all Parties in celebration of the display 'Afro Supa Hero' - Explore the supa hero and shero as cultural protectors, griots, mentors and leaders of mythical and alternative lifestyles; archetypes found in exciting and outrageous storylines.
Join us for an immersive experience of a supa hero performance that explores fatherhood; a salon-style panel sharing the passions of comic and action hero and sheroe enthusiasts; create your very own graphic novel alter-ego supa-star; bring your personal photographs, pop annuals, commercial and 'home-made' comics and action toys in their original packaging to our conservation and preservation surgery; come dressed in your finest '70s funk-inspired fashion, take a selfie of you wearing an Afro, dance your way down the 'London Soul Train Line' while chilling out to a P-Funk DJ soundtrack.
MUSIC, WORKSHOPS, SURGERIES, PERFORMANCE, PANELS & TALKS ON THE NIGHT MEET:
Jon Daniel, Independent Design Consultant - view his collection of well preserved black comics, graphic novels, action heroes in the display Afro Supa Hero and read his article 'A Supa Hero Identity Crisis' in the Voice on-line.
'A Supa Hero Identity Crisis' at Voice On-line
Terry Jervis, Jervis Entertainment Media Ltd - will discuss how his successful career in media was influenced by his childhood creativity. Terry will look at education, economics, the politics of race and the creative dynamics of owning your rights, in a world where the odds can be stacked against you.
Kunle Olulode, Chair of Voice 4 Change England - will facilitate a panel of passionate enthusiasts exploring the development of black action characters in comics, films and graphics, and unpack some of the reasons for their rise in popularity in recent years.
Nick Makoha, Actor - will perform an extract from his acclaimed play 'My Father and Other Superheroes', which follows the path of one man's honest revelation of how pop culture raised him in the absence of his father.
Read his article on the Voice On-line about black fatherhood
Jacqueline Springer, Contemporary Black Music Culture - will be in conversation with Jon Daniel about his Afro Supa Hero collection & its relevance to his maturation as a black man in 60s & 70s Britain. What do our possessions say about our sense of identity - racial & gendered?
Jasper The Vinyl Junkie, P-Funk & Soul DJ - will take up on a journey on the 'Mothership Connection' with Parliament, Funkadelic, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker and a little bit of Light of the World, Beggar and Co and High Tension
Jackie Mwanza, Independent Artist and Tutor - will lead workshops on creating your own alto-ego within a personal comic strip for one night only!
Anne Bancroft, Senior Paper Conservationist, V&A and Hannah Ishmael, Assistant Archivist, Black Cultural Archives - will host the ARCHIVE and PRESERVATION surgery giving you advice on items you bring to the event I.e. commercial and 'home-made' comics, graphic novels, action heroes still in their original packaging, and photographs taken in the 70s.
HERE ARE 7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BE AT THE V&A MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD, BETHNAL GREEN, LONDON on Friday 7 February, 18.30 - 21.45
  1. SHOW OFF YOUR FINEST 70s AFRO-FUNKYNESS AND STYLE IT OUT
  2. DEMONSTRATE YOUR 'SOUL TRAIN' DANCE MOVES
  3. DON AN AFRO AND TAKE A SELFIE AND SHOW IT OFF ON TWITTER
  4. CREATE YOUR ALTER-AGO JUST FOR A NIGHT
  5. SHARE YOUR HERO OR SHEROE THAT YOU LOOKED UP TO WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD, REAL OR FICTIONAL
  6. OPPORTUNITY TO BRING YOUR COMICS OR GRAPHIC NOVELS, POP ANNUALS, ACTION TOYS STILL IN THEIR ORIGINAL PACKAGING, COMIC STRIPS YOU DEVISED AS A CHILD AND NEVER THREW AWAY
  7. BRING PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOU, FAMILY, FRIENDS AND OTHERS DURING THE 70s SHOWING THE STYLING AND TRENDING BACK IN THE DAY
Afro Supa Hero display - is a snapshot of a childhood and journey to adulthood, shown through a personal collection of pop cultural heroes and heroines of the African diaspora. Jon Daniel’s action figures, comic books and games offer an insight into the experience of a boy of African Caribbean heritage growing up in 1960s and 1970s Britain, in search of his identity.

We are currently looking for artists working with forms of dance of the African Diaspora to participate in our next Open Stage event on March 5th at Spotlight, a multi-million pound creative youth space in London, designed to inspire. The aim of the event is to provide a safe, supportive environment for artists to test out new ideas in front of a small audience. The platform is open to artists at any stage of their career, but is particularly useful for emerging choreographers.

We are moving breathing beings, part of this rich tapestry of the living cosmos. Our lives are affected by all that is within and without us. We belong. And each of our lives is a unique expression, a unique opportunity.
As body meets land, we remember the greater part of ourselves, we come home - to rest, to celebrate and to gather body-earth wisdom. It is the work of the women and through our bodies it is accomplished.

Earth Dances workshops for women are based in the wild beauty of south Dartmoor near Ashburton.
Workshops include movement & stillness, sound & silence, offerings, creative expressions, good food and sharing in the company of women both inside and out on the land, responding to the changing cycles of the year and phases of the moon

There's more info on each workshop below, including fuller info on the Doorways workshop, or click on any of the titles opposite to visit the website.

You are invited to come with curiosity and offer yourself and the land
kindness, gratitude & wellbeing!

To book on any of the workshops, classes or courses, contact Denise on 07723329414 or helloearthdances@gmail.com, or

This is healing through dance . . . thank you!"
