The Mapdance Enterprise Scholarship
mapdance is a semi-professional touring company that has been a key feature of the MA Performance: Dance programme at the University of Chichester since 2006. Over the last eight years, the mapdance experience has developed into a distinctive pedagogy based around the development of professional practitioners as articulate, thinking dance artists. The programme takes as a model the experience of a professional dancer within a repertory company with a portfolio career. Learning about entrepreneurship by experience is, therefore, at the heart of the mapdance pedagogy.
The mapdance Enterprise Scholarship offers two students the opportunity to develop their dance industry-specific enterprise profiles by becoming enterprise interns during and immediately following their completion of the MA Performance: Dance programme. Each of the two scholarships is worth £2000, comprising a £1000 reduction in fees and £1000 remuneration for the internship. The intern would be expected to complete 80 hours’ work during and following their MA, and the period over which this work is spread is negotiable. The internship activities would be tailored to each intern according to their interests, skills and aspirations, but could include:
- Blog writing
- Teaching repertory in mapdance auditions
- Research assistance for a research project on mapdance pedagogy and entrepreneurship
- Tour booking assistance
- Choreographic assistance for professional choreographers creating work for the following year’s tour
- Supporting re-staging of repertory work on the following year’s cohort
- Giving talks about the mapdance experience
The recipients of the scholarship would enhance their:
- skills in marketing, the harnessing of social media, administration and negotiation with external organisations relevant to managing a touring dance company
- experience in teaching and choreographic assistance relevant to a portfolio career in dance
- experience in data collection and academic publishing relevant to the work of a practitioner-scholar
- transferable skills relevant to range of employment contexts (public speaking, social media, collaborative working methods, data collection).
How to apply
Applicants are requested to submit a 250-word statement outlining any prior experience of entrepreneurship in a dance context (desirable but not essential), the skills they wish to develop over the course of the internship, and the relevance of these skills to their future career aspirations in dance.
Applicants who have not yet submitted an application for the MA Performance: Dance are requested to submit this statement with their MA application.
Applicants who have already submitted an application for the MA Performance: Dance (excluding those who have already been rejected) are welcome to submit a separate statement directly to the MA administrator, Sue Francis at s.francis@chi.ac.uk
The closing date for submissions is 12 noon on 12th June 2014.
Enquiries can be directed to the MA Performance: Dance programme leader, Dr Clare Parfitt-Brown at c.parfitt-brown@chi.ac.uk

Re:Generations
International Conference
Reminder - Call for papers
The deadline for submissions is coming soon... 30th of May 2014!
The central theme of this third conference, focusing on dance and the African diaspora, is 'Rethinking the past to reimagine the future'. Its starting point is the realisation that dance practices that have significance today are grounded in histories of a range of dance forms and the histories of the dance practitioners and companies that have used and developed them. The better we understand these histories, the more we are able to understand and foster the potential for future developments in African diasporic forms, as well as in forms like ballet and contemporary dance.
The 2014 conference will facilitate discussion and debate about this in order to build a positive future for the development of new dance talent in the UK.
Hosted by Pavilion Dance South West, this conference will be delivered by ADAD, IRIE! dance theatre and De Montfort University Leicester ( DMU). The conference keynote address will be delivered by Zab Maboungou, Choreographer / Dancer / Director of Compagnie Dance Nyata Nyata; and Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre.
The Conference partners invite proposals for papers, lecture demonstrations and workshops that address the central theme of this Conference. Deadline for submissions is 30th of May. More details
