Applications are invited for admission to MA by Research and PhD degrees in Theatre Studies at the National University of Singapore. Research Scholarships are offered to PhD candidates on a competitive basis for four years full-time study.The performance practices and cultures of the Asian region have a long history, and contemporary significance. As a focus of study, they provide a means of understanding the aesthetic expressions, cultural dynamics and social forces of a diverse and fast-changing part of the world. As a reference point within wider international contexts, they provide an intellectual resource for critical and comparative research in the fields of theatre, performance and cultural studies.Cosmopolitan and highly globalized, Singapore is an island nation-state with a rich colonial legacy and a long history of migration. With its vibrant performance scene, world-class theatre facilities as well as close proximity to countries in the Asian region, Singapore provides a unique location from which to pursue such enquiries.Theatre Studies at the National University of Singapore fosters rigorous investigation and theatrical experimentation. The programme is reputed for its innovative scholarship in the contemporary performance and cross-cultural currents of the region and beyond. Comprising ten full-time and four associate faculty members, the theatre studies programme reflects their wide-ranging research interests and professional experience in Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and the Asia-Pacific. Their specialisations range from creative practice, pedagogy, theory and criticism to dramaturgy, with particular emphases on cultural performance, digital archiving, community engagement, cinema, popular culture, arts policy and practice-based research methodologies. Actively engaged in the local theatre and performance scene, members of the faculty are well networked with such local professional groups of international repute as TheatreWorks, The Necessary Stage and The Theatre Practice.The program develops expertise in research skills, and in theatrical and critical approaches and theories. It deepens the student’s understanding of current debates in theatre studies and fosters an awareness of the relationships between theory and practice.ApplicationsAll applications for graduate study are handled by the Graduate Division of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This three day event will be hosted by Hakeem Onibudo, with presentations by leading artist such as Sharon Watson (Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre), and performances by renowned artists from the USA, Canada, Africa, Europe and indeed the UK.
