Greetings One and All,
For the past few months I have been recommending that you save the date for#EXPRESSYOURSELF and now thisFREE event is almost here – Friday 21 November 2014, 18.30 – 21.45,so I hope you have it embellished in your diaries and that you and others can join us for an amazing evening that’s all aboutself-expression!
Explore art and performance as tools for social and cultural exchange, identity and self-expression. Why not release your inner activist, your agent provocateur, and #GETINVOLVED and help to create our DJs soundtrack by posting your tune(s) on the Facebook link below. Don’t miss the 3 minutes mental health Flash mob; make your own up-cycled jewellery; here a miniTEDtalk about a new social justice organisation and campaign; view films about real people’s activism; listen to talks about the power of dress, and music, as forms of how we express ourselves; be prepared to be transported through storytelling; and open your ears to two forms of live protest music genres – hoping this will move you into doing something yourself that will make a change!
1. The DJ Set in the Grand Entrance with Femi YD, Barrie Sharpye & Tighten Up’s Mistah Brown
Post your #EXPRESSYOURSELF / #GETINVOLVED soundtrack suggestions here on the FB event, argue/debate the pros and cons of your selections (and ours!) and see what makes it onto the final playlist!
2. Hands-on up-cycling jewellery workshop with artist Jackie Mwanza in the Learning Centre - use tin cans to make Jewellery inspired by those in the ‘Disobedient Objects’ exhibition made by the Black Panthers whilst in solitary confinement for over 40 years
3. Film Screening 1 We Are Born to Survive, (the story of activist Kath Lock) dir: Paul Okojie & Paul Henley
4. Sing for Social Justice with folk singer songwriter Bethany Elen - "A voice for change"
