The Afro-Latin Lounge

Dear Dance UK members,

I’m writing to ask for your help. The BBC is running the first ever BBC Young Dancer of the Year competition – this means 10 hours of prime time national television focused on showcasing our most talented young dancers aged 16-20. We all know about the high profile status of BBC Young Musician of the Year, this is our chance to show young dancers are just as important and talented. This opportunity is unprecedented and Dance UK is really getting behind it, dance rarely gets this kind of exposure on TV which highlights it as an art form.

TEN DAYS TO GO!
Closing date for applications to BBC Young Dancer extended to 17 November 2014

The closing date for applications has been extended - so please, if you’re a young dancer apply, or if you know or teach amazing young dancers please encourage them to apply and, if possible, support them in doing so.

The young dancers will receive some fantastic opportunities by taking part and will have the chance to be seen by leading artistic directors and choreographers. The judges for the Grand Final are: Matthew Bourne, Akram Khan, Wayne McGregor, Tamara Rojo, Kenrick Sandy and Alistair Spalding.
The BBC has been working with Sadler’s Wells and a team of renowned dance professionals on this project, which is part of the BBC’s commitment to the support of emerging talent. Dancers will be mentored and guided by some of the leading names in dance and those who reach the Grand Final will work with a choreographer to create a new piece especially for them. Carlos Acosta has taken on the role of Ambassador, and many of the leading names in dance have agreed to be involved as judges, choreographers or mentors including Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre and choreographer (Category Final Judge); DJ Renegade (Category Final Judge); Seeta Patel, dancer and choreographer (Category Final Judge); David Nixon OBE, Artistic Director of Northern Ballet (Category Final Judge); Kenrick ‘H20’ Sandy, Co-Founder/Artistic Director of Boy Blue Entertainment, choreographer and dancer (Grand Final Judge).

The regional rounds will take place in December, the category finals in March 2015 and the category winners will go through to dance on the main stage at Sadler’s Wells at the BBC Young Dancer Grand Final on 9 May. This year, the competition has four separate categories: ballet, contemporary, hip hop and South Asian dance.

Please note: CONTEMPORARY has the potential to cover all types of dance so young musical theatre dancers could enter via this category, though I expect many will also be highly skilled in urban / hip hop dance as well.

Competition details can be found here:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/482m16XHb4zxlcRtPdZwKpw/entry-requirements

To cover the competition there will be four episodes shown on BBC4 plus two hours of live transmission on BBC2; this is a unique opportunity for the dance sector to inform a wide public about dance training, what it takes to make it as a dancer and the importance of nurturing young talent for the future of dance. It is a bold move for the BBC to commit this airtime to focusing on young dancers; it is important that the dance sector supports the initiative in its first year to encourage the BBC to develop it and extend the offer in coming years.

This is a great opportunity for young dancers; please encourage them to apply by 17 November.

So excited to see the next generation of dancers on TV!

Best wishes,
Caroline
