Jackie has lectured extensively at various universities and colleges throughout Britain , and facilitated numerous community dance projects with the UK , USA , Canada , the Caribbean and, as part of a British Council initiative, in Zimbabwe .

Buena Vista Social Club piano prodigy Roberto Fonseca and Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade, along with some special guests, are set to bring the sound of Havana to Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall as part of the London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3. Roberto Fonseca is at the heart of DJ and producer Gilles Peterson’s latest project, Havana Cultura, created to raise awareness of the site http://www.havana-cultura.com/ <http://www.havana-cultura.com/> . The website is a global art initiative from Havana Club rum and a window on contemporary Cuban culture developed to give the spirit of Havana a global voice. The Havana Cultura album is a celebration of Cuba’s freshest musical talent from latin, afro jazz and fusion to hip hop, funk, reggaeton and R&B. The album includes a collection of new material written and recorded in Havana by local singers such as vocalist Danay (described by Gilles Peterson as “Cuba’s Jill Scott”) and Ogguere. It has been released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label on October 26th. PORTOBELLO DANCE PRESENTS
CLASSICALLY BRITISH 2009
THURSDAY 22ND OCTOBER 7.30pm

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to enjoy a unique evening of modern ballet from Britain’s finest black and Asian classically trained dancers who have trained at the Royal Ballet School or Rambert Ballet School.
The aim of this vibrant event is to showcase and celebrate Black History month and support Black and Asian classically trained dancers. Under Director Mark Elie, The Portobello Dance foundation also aims is to create a centre of excellence to nurture this outstanding home grown, diverse, dance talent.
Mark Elie trained with the Ballet Rambert before joining the Ballet Gulbenkian Company in Lisbon, Portugal. He then went on to be groomed at New York’s prestigious Dance Theatre of Harlem whose founder Arthur Mitchell has had a lasting influence on Marks work. Mitchell’s work revolutionised black ballet in America and his prestigious company shattered the myth that black dancers were only suitable for jazz and commercial dance.

More than 150 children pass through the Portobello Dance School at the Tabernacle in Nottinghill each week for ballet, tap, street dance and jazz lessons. Many of the schools students have gone on to study dance and performing arts in some of London’s top performing arts schools such as the Urdang Academy and the Arts Educational School in Chiswick. One Student, 15 year old Kym Alexander won a scholarship to New York’s Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Summer School and we are delighted that Kym has just secured a place at the Ballet Rambert School. You will also get to see some of the children from the dance school perform at the Classically British event.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Each year Portobello Dance hosts Classically British, for one evening and as we are a Charitable Organisation we rely on donations to do so. Over the past five years we have had loyal support and donations from broadcasterJune Sarpong, Michael J. Prest and Yasmin Prest , Danny John Jules and Lady Elizabeth Bingham.
This year we are all able to donate less, due to the credit crunch, so we are looking for donations from £100, £300 or up to £1,000. We would be delighted if you can give a gift, so we can bring this wonderful showcase together for what promises to be an inspiring evening. We would be grateful if any donations can reach us by 15th August 2009.
The showcase will take place at the Tabernacle Arts Centre, Powis Square, London W11 on THURSDAY 22ND OCTOBER 2009 at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 .
