The inimitable king of street-dance, Shabba-Doo, makes a triumphant return to the UK to deliver the first in a series of educational programmes March 2012 will see the return of legend Shabba-Doo to the UK, to deliver the first in a series of educational programmes designed to empower street dancers with the vital tools and knowledge needed to succeed. He has excelled professionally and led four decades of street dance. As a professional who has been in the entertainment industry for 4 decades, with an unparalleled list of credits to his name, there is no denying his expertise and historical stature. Shabba-Doo is an original founding member of The Lockers, the legendary street-dance troupe of the early 1970s, Original Soul Train Gang member, and the star of Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. He is also the codifier and progenitor of the Waackin' dance form, and an award winning choreographer who has choreographed for some of the greatest superstars of all time, including Madonna and Lionel Richie. Shabba-Doo said: “I am looking forward to returning to the UK with great hope, joy, and love. I am committed to serving the UK ’s street-dance community by empowering the nation’s youth with accurate knowledge and practical skills that will serve them for decades to come. Long live personal freedom, and unbridled artistic expression!” The UK tour will commence in Swansea , Wales on Thursday 22 March and then move on to London for a week of mini-intensive sessions from Monday 26 March. Both visits will include 'An Evening with Shabba-Doo' Street Dance Seminar. The London portion of the trip is programmed over four nights with different things being taught in every class so that those who are really serious about getting a base to further their training can do the whole thing. This is also designed in a way to cater for those who are new to the dances, have a slight interest and want to come and try just one or two classes. Franz Sindac, a dancer from London , took Shabba-Doo's class during his visit here in June 2011 he said of the experience: "I took Shabba Doo's workshop last year, and I must say, it was an experience to be there. In a short span of time, I have learned so many things. Dancing is not just a technique or movement but an expression within your soul. I have never seen someone like him so passionate about dancing and he talks nothing but the truth." Corina Best, Director of The Spread Love Dance Project explains: "I am delighted to be working in partnership with Shabba-Doo to create these opportunities for UK street dancers. I had the good fortune of meeting and working with him in 2011. He teaches more than just dance, he teaches life.Learning dance from Shabba-Doo is food for the soul. If you genuinely want to develop your skills as a street dancer and take your ability to the next level, particularly anyone who is serious about Waackin' or Lockin' - these sessions should unquestionably be a staple part of your dancing-diet. Also for people running street-dance groups and teaching these styles this is a great opportunity to enhance your knowledge to ensure that you are providing yourstudents with quality and authentic teachings." She continued: "To add to the excitement, we are running a prize draw for eight lucky people to win a private training session with Shabba-Doo. One person from each workshop will win a place in this one-off,exclusive private class. Make sure to reserve your space early as this willsell-out. Early booking discounts are available." The Afro-Latin Lounge

Afro-Cuban dance - Starting Sat 25 Feb - Sat 31 March

PALO- or Palomonte refers to one of the dances belonging to the Bantu culture or "Congos" as it's been commonly known in Cuba for centuries. The Congos were one of the first groups of slaves brought to Cuba as far back as the 16th century. Therefore they assimilated better the Spanish spoken at the time and incorporated it in their chants. The dance is characterised by fast, energetic and fighting motions. It is usually performed with sticks or poles (hence the name "palo") and there is a constant and frenetic movement of shoulders, chest and torso. Of all the Afro-Cuban dances, it's the one performed closest to the ground since in the Bantu culture there exists the belief that the soil is the source of life and nourishment. The other two dances that make up the "Congo cycle" are the makuta and yuka. Dates: Saturday

Time: 6-7.30pm

Where: The Place, 17 Duke Road

He has also written on Latin and dance issues for various publications such as The Guardian and The Voice. At present he is the author of two blogs: The Afro-Latin Lounge, an online noticeboard, and A Cuban In London, an account of his life in the UK mixed with opinion pieces on music, dance, linguistics, literature and politics. Un Solo Palo No Hace Monte ( A Single Tree Does Not A Forest Make) - Review

As debut albums go, Un solo Palo No Hace Monte (A Single Tree Does Not a Forest Make) by the London Lucumi Choir, is one of the more promising ones I’ve come across in a long time. From their choice of tracks to the cover design, the record exudes passion and dedication aplenty. The opening salvo is Eleguá, the orisha that traditionally kicks off festivities in Yoruba culture in Cuba, played on both bata drums and güiro and led expertly by Daniela Roselson De Armas on vocals. The second track introduces us to Ogún, the second of the four warriors in Ocha and performed on bata drums again and bembé. The latter rhythm could have come straight out of a slum in Havana. Changó, the third song builds up slowly until it reaches a well-worked and upbeat climax; a strong reminder of the fire and thunder that are said to be owned by this orisha. The güiro returns for track number four, Oyá, a short melody that is charmingly sung by Sheila Ruiz and Nana Aldrin Quaye. The Yoruba presence, then, gives way to its Arará counterpart with Masé, the fifth number, the equivalent of Ochún in the Lucumi culture. Variety is the key word in the Choir’s output and this is evident in the guaguancó El Mayoral (The Foreman) with its strong message of rebellion and freedom and the yambú El Pan de Piquito, a nice musical spin on a popular Cuban phrase. The record’s coda Cantos Espirituales (Spiritual Chants) finds the aforementioned Nana with singers Mish Aminoff, Olga Baglay and Anita Chakraborty reviving a lesser-known genre of the Afro-Cuban canon.

The London Lucumi Choir (“Lucumi” is a Cuban variation of the word “Ulkumi” or “Ulcumi”, one of the former kingdoms in Yorubaland) was founded in 2006 and is one of the few community ensembles in the British capital that doesn’t audition future members. The choir is the brainchild of percussionist Jorge Amando de Armas Sarria, singer and arranger Daniela Rosselson de Armas and master drummer Javier Campos Martínez. The group focuses mainly on performing songs dedicated to the orishas (Yoruba deities), plus other rhythms belonging to the rich Afro-Cuban tradition. The London Lucumi Choir was recently shortlisted for the Folkloric Act of the Year by online magazine Latino Life. It will officially launch Un Solo Palo No Hace Monte on the 24th April at the Rich Mix as part of the La Línea Festival.

You can buy the record here.

Come on People....

Brrr! It's nippy out there! Let's get the blood circulating again....

Aida Diop and Eva Goudiaby are holding an afternoon of workshops that will have your whole body smiling again!

You may or may not be a fan of belly dancing, but one thing most people agree on is that it is a very liberating, and sensual dance performed largely by women, and largely, taught by women... Well, let's go South of the Sahara and and place those same virtues in the region of Senegal......Where we find, SABAR: A beautifully, dynamic and joyful dance, where the natural movements of the female body are appreciated and accentuated.. whether you dance or not, as a woman, you will find your body 'fall' into this style quite naturally.... in all its splendour.

COME AND SEE!!!

We will also do the more familiar, and much-loved 'djembe' style of dance: Our teachers' knowledge of djembe dances and rhythms is unchallenged; and they generously share fresh movement vocabulary with their students; injecting newblood into the scene. COME AND DANCE WITH THEM !!!! You will not be disappointed!!!

Aida has taught at Danceworks, at Feedback 33, at Afro-Xplosion, at ADAD's Bloom Festival, holds a regular dance class in Ladbroke Grove, London, and recently performed with her students at Camden Rock. And everywhere she goes, she is invited back, and draws more people to her... if you don't know why, come and find out!

Cuba’s biggest, funkiest dance orchestra returns to London for the first time in two years.

Formed in 1969 in Havana, Cuba, this 20-piece band plays an irresistible brand of dance groove they created called ‘songo’ – a solid and invigorating fusion of rich Caribbean rhythms, Afro-Cuban drumming, salsa & rock/pop elements. This new sound is still the rhythm of Havana and one of the most influential Cuban forms since the cha-cha-cha.
