The Afro-Latin Lounge

Come and enjoy a feast of drumming, singing and camp fires in Wymondley Woods in Hertfordshire with an adjacent 20-acre conservation area with mature woods, stream, pond and grassland.


We have camping and indoor accomodation with access and facilities for the disabled. Workshops will be held in the Activity Centre and in yurts.


There’ll be workshop sessions on Thursday evening, all day Friday & Saturday and on Sunday morning & afternoon.

Content of study


The topics we’ll cover include; Afrocuban drumming (from Bata, Bembe, Guiro, Iyesa & Congo), Afrobrazilian drumming (from Ijexa, Candomble de Angola & Candomble de Ketu) plus songs for all these traditions.

Who can take part?



The workshops are designed for adults. 16 to 18 years olds with drumming experience can also attend if accompanied by an adult (guardian) during the weekend.

Families


Families with children under 16 are also welcome. Please contact us for family rates. There are a number of sports, games and outdoor activities available for children and young people. If there’s sufficient demand, we’ll be happy to offer music workshops as well. Children under 14 need to be supervised at all times during the weekend. There are reduced rates for non-participating adults (guardians) attending purely to supervise children.Camping option is available for families. Indoor accommodation is subject to availability and we can only confirm this nearer the time of the workshop.


Indoor accommodation


The Centre has five dormitories, each sleeping 6-8 and furnished with bunk beds with storage facilities beneath. There are separate male & female showers/toilets.
Camping


The Centre is situated within a 4-acre campsite. So there’s plenty of room for you to put up your tent or yurt. There are separate male & female showers/toilets for campers.

There is a campfire site and an arena space for games.



Instruments


Some instruments will be provided but if you can, please bring your own from the following list: congas, bata. Atabaques, shekeres, cowbells, drums sticks, whippy sticks. You can specify which instruments you can bring on the registration form. Please bring ear-plugs.

Food



Vegetarian food is provided for all meals during the weekend. If you have any special dietary requirements / allergies please let us know on the registration form.


Free time


During your free time you can go for a walk in the woods or enjoy some of the on site activities.


Your help during the weekend


To help keep things tidy and ensure this workshop runs smoothly, we kindly ask all participants to help with certain household duties.

Auditions and Classes



Phoenix Dance Theatre is currently looking for male and female dancers of outstanding quality to join the company on full-time contracts from summer 2012. Applicants should have strong contemporary and classical training and must have a minimum of three years professional experience. Feedback33 is a Professional Dancers' Mentoring Forum set up by Sheron Wray.


An opportunity to take part in various dance techniques with teachers from around the globe. It is a chance to gain insights into the passions, challenges, and experiences of various artists and teachers.

Cuban Contemporary Dance with Dwayne Barnaby, Thursday 9 February, Thursday 23 February, Thursday 1 March, and Thursday 8 Mar, 2012, 7pm – 9pm (registration 7pm – 7.25pm; class 7.30pm – 9pm)

Venue: The London Studio Centre, 42 - 50 York Way, London N1 9AB (adjacent to Lincoln Lounge)

Dwayne’s class is filled with a strong Cuban and Caribbean folkloric influence. Over the course of four weeks, Dwayne will be experimenting with movements and rhythms in a high energy class, while loosely using some contemporary elements. Dwayne’s main objective in these sessions is lead a fun class which allows participants to express themselves to rhythms rooted in Cuban and Afro-Caribbean folklore. Each class will end with a set of movements that will later become a part of a piece of work.

Teacher’s Bio

Dwayne Barnaby was born in Jamaica and trained with Ashe Caribbean performing arts ensemble. He later trained in Cuba at the Escuela Nacional de Danza Cuba where he specialised in Cuban modern technique, Cuban folklore, choreography and dance education. A former member of Phoenix Dance Theatre and former cast member of the London production of Disney’s The Lion King, Dwayne’s performance credits also include Emperor Jones produced by The Gate theatre.

Dwayne loves choreography and has choreographed for L’Antoinette Stines’ L'Acadco Dance Company in Jamaica, and for The Gate theatre production of Emperor Jones. Known for his inspiring and high energy classes, he has taught dance at the National School of Dance in Jamaica and at Afro Dance Xplosion (London) amongst others.

A registered mental health nurse, Dwayne aspires to develop a system utilising dance as a form of mental health alternative therapy.
