YAMUNA YEMANJA - When India meets Brazil

We are proud to announce that this project, which envisages the dialogue between kathak and rhythms from Pernambuco will be developed and performed throughout the summer thanks to the support from
Arts Council!

The project draws a parallel between Indian Gods and Afro Brazilian Orixas, where music, making and dance will have a new element and its the 1st year of Maracatudo Mafua presenting a theme.
It will once again have Simone Sou as musical director, this time with artistic consultancy from Gabriel Levy.

Manuela Benini ( on far left of this stunning picture by
Simon Richardson — with Devika Rao, Katie Ryan and UzumAki Raj) is the Indian side of the dance, also with the consultancy of Kumudini Lakhia and Mariana Pinho covering the brazilian aspect of it.

Mafua stage group will be performing some tracks based on the project and perform at Brazilica Festival in Liverpool on July 19th!

But the real special part of this is that other 3 UK based groups will benefit from one off rehearsal with Simone and Mariana.

By making the effort to come to Notting Hill Carnival they will also be granted the costumes for their own group wardrobe beside all the artistic and unique content of this cultural journey!

DORIS is back!

Not only we have the above news to cheer your summer up, but we have the return of Tribe of Doris!!!

A summer school that on its last 2 editions had the samba reggae phenomenon sessions via Jon Hardeman from Ilu Axe and Mariana Pinho. The end of the festival coincidentally happened whilst the London riots were bursting.

That gave all the artists, participants and staff a weird bitter taste, as if the best of the world was ending to give space to so much hate. On
this video you can have an idea of the fabulous vibe and impact the festival has in people's lives!

So the return of this festival, this time being just a weekend format, brings some hope back to us! Hoping this will be again a yearly event and a full week long as it means a full development process with the students!
From may 29th - July 1st find us on the field, both Maracatu and Samba reggae drumming and dance workshops will be part of an extensive program of workshops!

Curzon DocDays presents Passinho Dance-Off (UK premiere)
27th May
18:45 (film 19:00)

Passinho is a dance craze that’s swept across Rio de Janeiro, leaving more chaos in its wake than the International Olympic Committee. It’s made superstars of the scene’s most mercurial performers, championing the high levels of creativity and passion endemic to the city’s favelas. Directed by Emílio Domingos, this documentary follows the scene’s best dancers in the run up to a city-wide dance battle to crown the king of passinho. But it takes an unexpected turn when one of them goes missing. Winner of the New Directions Award at the Festival of Rio.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director.
