Caribbean Modern and Contemporary
Technique - draws upon Modern and Contemporary Dance technical principles
extracted from systems developed in Jamaica and Cuba. The technical explorations are grounded in the reinforcement
of traditional and popular movement information, which shapes the aesthetic,
while fusing elements ballet, modern and contemporary dance discoveries. The resulting synthesis is a rigorous
system of training for the contemporary dancer. The class is
designed to challenge the intermediate/advanced dancer to use technique as a
tool to execute movement efficiently and safely through engaging a diversity of
approaches.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Celebrate the Victoria and Albert Museum display, ‘Hanging Out –
Youth Culture Then and Now’ and its influence on young people today.
It brings together historic material with work made by youth
participants in response. The 50s and 60s were a highpoint for youth
culture and saw innovation in fashion, film, music, entertainment, sport
and protest. This was a time of social change and mass immigration of
people from the commonwealth countries, events that would have a lasting
impact on British culture.
Join us to celebrate Hanging Out – Youth Culture Then and Now with
two special events:
Where Did You Hang Out?
Saturday 14 July 2012, 12:30 – 17:00
£10, £7 concession
Explore the London scene and popular culture during the 50s and 60s
with Golden Globe and BAFTA Award winning actress Rita Tushingham (‘A
Taste of Honey, ‘The Leather Boys’), Ace Cafe's Managing Director
Mark Wilsmore and Cue Club performer Fred Peters (formally of Freddie
Notes and the Rudies), as they share their accounts of growing up and
hanging out during this era with Royal College of Art Cultural Historian
Barry Curtis.
After the War – Youth Protest, Style, Image and Identity
Sunday 22 July 2012, 12:00 - 17:00
£8, £5 concession
Spend a day exploring the cultural revolution after WWII through 50s
glamour and the image of austere times, the modern housing estate and
interiors. Examine the social and political frameworks that influenced
a new counter-culture and identity, fuelled by the ‘birth of the
teenager’ and the swinging 60s. Enjoy a DJ set, film screenings
including the Hanging Out documentary, talks programme, 50s & 60s
make-overs, t-shirt printing, paper dress making and live monologues.
Hanging Out – Youth Culture Then and Now is in collaboration with
Full Spectrum Productions who are sponsored by The National Lottery
through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Looking for professional dancers to be part of a workshop/demonstration
Deloitte Ignite is an annual contemporary arts festival happening over the weekend of the 31-2 September 2012 at The Royal Opera House. This year contemporary artist Yinka Shonibare MBE curates the festival.
Alesandra Seutin/Vocab Dance Company has been invited to perform and to deliver a workshop/demonstration on Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 September, in which she will share her unique and specific approach on contemporary dance. The workshop is based around the transformation that happens on Western Ballet and Contemporary trained dancers when African dance aesthetics are integrated. Therefore transforming the original vocabulary into a very special language.
For this we are looking for professional male & female contemporary dancers to be part of this wonderful experience.
The workshops will be held on both days, 12.30-2pm at the Clore/Royal Opera House in front of an audience and accompanied by live percussionists.
These workshops/demonstration are free, but by invitation only.

Talking about the Empire, when I met Ra at the Akemi market in Willesden, pretty much the first thing he said to me was that we had been “de-selected”, before explaining by showing me a multi-page spread in Sunday’s Observer newspaper looking at the issue of Britishness. What he meant by being “de-selected” was that not one African or part African was among the 5 subjects highlighted http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/jun/17/being-british-does-it-matter
The Voice Online provided a counterpoint with “Rule Britannia, Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves!” ringing in his ears, the author, Nelson Abbey, got his friend and acquaintances to give their take on Britain. Click to read The African Or Black Question? reponse.
In addition to the free Shape Arts/Covert PR's 2 hour 1-2-1 PR/marketing mentoring offer for a musician/creative person with any form of disability on June 27 2012, Shape is also running on the same day the free Creative Steps Workshop - Accessing the Creative Industries, 2-5pm at its Camden, London HQ:
Muyiwa & the Riversongz's HMV Hammersmith Apollo. show was fantastic! Perhaps the first UK Gospel act to sell out Hammersmith Apollo!
Talking Copyright seminar was great - a few disagreements between panellists etc. Will post podcast soonish.
