InSite Intensive with La Macana and Ember (Spain)

Tuesday 31st July - Contemporary technique class and choreographic workshop with a focus on outdoor and sited work, for professional dancers and those wishing to work at a professional pace

Cost: £10

This workshop will focus on mental and physical communication with our partners and finding the balance between bodies.Technical exercises and games will be the starting point for group and partner work. We believe that as much as the relation between performers is clear, it will directly correspond to the emotional reaction of the viewer, as dance (movement, gestures etc.) is a stronger emphatic way of communication.

Some of our work has been created for the outdoors in an attempt to recover public spaces, to invade it again, to use it as our playground (as it used to be) and share this experience with onlookers.

We will use recognisable human relationships such as power, dependency, trust, protection, equality etc. Relationships that will help us to create images, to define energies and to invent stories. Participants will explore some given elements and steps but will also be invited to play with their own material within a defined context.

La Macana - La Macana is a dance company based in Galicia (Spain) formed by Caterina Varela and Alexis Fernandez in 2009. Their first work as a duet 'Ven' has won a number of awards and has achieved wide acclaim internationally with performances in over 20 countries. From this they have also been working on their own different productions. La Macana continue to collaborate with several artists and combine their creative work with teaching internationally

www.lamacana.es

Ember - Ember is an artistic platform that holds the works of Laura Aris, Jorge Jauregui and their collaborations. Both are Spainish dancers, choreographers and teachers, living in Belgium. In 2009, after having worked for several big companies, they started to search for their own artistic voice. Ember collaborate with several artists and their performances are being presented internationally

You can also catch La Macana and Ember, performing both collaboratively and seperately at Urban Moves 2012

Auditions and Classes

Workshop/ Demonstration for professional dancers with ADAD Trailblazer, Alesandra Seutin at the Royal Opera House

Deloitte Ignite is an annual contemporary arts festival happening over the weekend of the 1-2 September 2012 at The Royal Opera House. This year contemporary artist Yinka Shonibare MBE curates the festival. Alesandra Seutin/Vocab Dance Company has been invited to perform and to deliver a workshop/demonstration on Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 September, in which she will share her unique and specific approach on contemporary dance. The workshop is based around the transformation that happens on Western Ballet and Contemporary trained dancers when African dance aesthetics are integrated, therefore transforming the original vocabulary into a very special language.

We are looking for professional male & female contemporary dancers to be part of this wonderful experience. The workshops will be held on both days, from 12.30-2pm at the Clore/Royal Opera House in front of an audience and accompanied by live percussionists. These workshops/demonstrations are free, but by invitation only.

Please send a CV and a short statement of interest to alesandra@vocabdance.co.uk, no later than Tuesday 17 July, 6pm also stating which day you would like to attend. (It is possible to attend both).

Successful participants will be notified by email no later than Monday 23 July.

Save the Children - The Ultimate Dance Challenge

Save the Children are holding a fantastic fundraising activity - The Ultimate Dance Challenge London - on Sunday 7 October at Trinity Laban Dance, one of Europe's leading centres for contemporary dance. They are asking participants to dance for five-hours and raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship to help save children's lives.

Those who raise over £300 could win afternoon tea with Arlene Phillips!

Save the Children are looking for dance teachers, professionals and choreographers to volunteer some time on the day to take or help support a class in a variety of dance styles – could you help by running a dance class?

The Ultimate Dance Challenge London promises to be a really fun activity for all involved and raise valuable funds for Save the Children. If you are interested in being a part of it please contact s.pirouet@savethechildren.org.uk for more information.

Circomedia is the Bristol-based and internationally renowned training centre for circus and physical theatre. We offer a number of training courses for young people including the BTEC Diploma and Extended Diploma in Performance. The course gives students age 16+ the opportunity to train in a variety of circus disciplines while learning about the performing arts industry and how, as a performer, to maintain a healthy body.

Our previous BTEC courses have always included a professional work experience opportunity and have seen performance collaborations with partners such as the Olympics, Cirque Bijou and Harbourside Festival.

Our BTEC course involves fairly intensive training, 3 days a week and we have found it suits students who are not necessarily from an academic background. It is also very popular with those who have previous dance, gymnastics, and sports experience due to the physical nature of the course. There is an academic side to the course as it is worth the equivalent of two A-Levels but a great deal of time is spent training with professional circus performers to improve skill levels and fitness. Students work toward a final, full-length devised show that places as much emphasis on theatre and physical theatre as it does on circus-skills. This element often attracts students from a performing arts and drama background who wish to develop new performance techniques.

On Tuesday 21 August we have an open audition and taster session at Circomedia, St Paul ’s Church, Portland Square , Bristol BS2 8SJ . This is an opportunity for any young person aged 16+ to come along, try out some of the skills for the course and see if it might be of interest to them. Further information about the course, how to apply and what the taster day entails can be found on our website www.circomedia.com or by contacting Saba James sabaj@circomedia.com or 0117 947 7288.

I’ve also attached further information on the course and would be grateful if you could pass it on to your contacts or any young people that you think might be interested. If you would like me to post some Circomedia prospectuses please let me know. Links to our online application form can be found here: http://www.circomedia.com/circus-training-courses/

Home-Bed 2012

Hello!

It's an exciting time in Oxfordshire with our Home-Bed programme underway. We are already supporting 6 local artists to make new work and are busy planning a programme of professional development based on the needs of the dance sector.

I am pleased to be sending you the information about the 'Cultivator' strand of Home-Bed. Please do share with artists who may be interested. If you would be interested in including this on your website or in a newsletter etc please do let me know if you would like any further information, pictures, quotes etc.

About Home-Bed

Home-bed is an Arts Council England funded two-year professional development programme, aiming to provide and generate high quality opportunities for artists and dance organisations enabling them to grow and flourish and take their own aspirations further. Most of the activity will take place in the outstanding new spaces at the Old Fire Station in Oxford. The project will enable artists to fully embed themselves and their practice into the building and opens up another key building for dance in the region. The refurbished Old Fire Station will provide a sustainable home for Oxford Dance Forum, acting as a generator hub for professional dance artists both locally, within the wider region and beyond.

Home-bed comprises of four key strands:-
Key strand 1 - Developing new skills: intensives, seminars, workshops and residencies
Key strand 2 - Supporting the artist (as an individual): application only schemes - Incubator, Germinator and Cultivator
Key strand 3 - Creating work for performance: through annual platforms and scratch nights
Key strand 4 - Projects: larger/long term projects with other partners

Cultivator: This strand encourages Oxfordshire based dance artists at all stages of their career to cultivate their practice with business support and advice and with bespoke solutions. The focus is on artists to decide what they need to develop as artistic professionals and businesses.

There is a short Application Guidance Notes document to help artists prepare their proposal and an Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form. There is no formal application form and no deadline. It is a rolling programme.

How to apply to Cultivator:

Send a 1-2 page document with the following -
1) Your name, address, telephone/mobile number, email address
2) The strand of support you are applying for e.g. Cultivator - Management support/advice
3) Answer each of the criteria for selection relevant to that strand
4) Send as an attachment costings, quotes, relevant CVs/biogs and any other documents relevant to your application

If you would prefer to make your application verbally by a video please contact Kyla to arrange this with you. If writing your application, send these documents to kylaodf@gmail.com or upload them to www.dropbox.com and 'share' the files with Kyla.

How decisions are made:

13 years after Buena Vista Social Club, a new film emerges to shine a light on the Havana of today. 7 DAYS IN HAVANA, is the latest film that gets under the skin of this eclectic city and presents 7 chapters directed by 7 renowned international film directors.

Havana is presented as a pulsating temptress which never ceases to bewilder, a city where dreams are unfulfilled and luxury is scarce, yet a city where people muck in together, share, barter and borrow in constant good spirit. Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects, Traffic, Che) makes his directorial debut as he follows Teddy (Josh Hutcherson; The Hunger Games) a naïve your American tourist visiting Havana for the first time. Other directors include Gasper Noe (Irreversible, Enter the Void) and Laurent Cantet (The Class). 7 DAYS IN HAVANA is the first Cuban film to be selected for official competition at Cannes and will be released nationwide on the 6th July.

7 Days in Havana is in cinemas from Friday
