A Screaming Man
A Screaming Man (French: Un homme qui crie) is a 2010 French-Chadian drama film by Mahamat Saleh Haroun, starring Youssouf Djaoro and Diouc Koma.
Present-day Chad . Adam, fifty-five, a former swimming champion, is a pool attendant at a smart N'Djamena hotel. When the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to give up his job to his son Abdel. Terribly resentful, he feels socially humiliated.
All the while, the country is in the throes of a civil war. Rebel forces are attacking the government. The authorities demand that the population contribute to the "war effort", giving money or volunteers old enough to fight off the assailants. The District Chief constantly harasses Adam for his contribution. But Adam is penniless; he only has his son....
The film won the Jury Prize at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.
Free, suggested £3 donation.

Faat Kine ( Senegal , 2000)
A cheerful movie of simple pleasures, Faat-Kine stars Venus Seye as the movie's eponymous heroine. Kine is the successful manager of a gasoline station in Dakar , and an unmarried mother of two, each the product of a failed relationship with a delinquent father. Independent, well-to-do, and equable, Kine flits between the demands of her job, her family and her friends with admirable composure. The movie follows Kine's activities with an unobtrusive eye, capturing matter-of-factly the eventfulness of daily life. Confrontations punctuate her relatively comfortable existence, from a tearful quarrel with her restive daughter to a roadside spat with a woman who accuses her of having an affair with her husband. Amid the bustle of Kine's day-to-day routine, the movie offers wistful flashbacks that explain Kine's complex but happy situation. The movie ends on a triumphant note at a party thrown by Kine for her son and daughter, where a climactic meeting between her son and his father offers an explicit glimpse into Sembene's outlook on Senegal 's past and future.

22 February 2013
Nubian Jak Academy and the Africa Centre presents
African Heritage Month International (AHMI): a new way forward for Black History Month?Talks, discussion, socializing and directional thinking about African Heritage
This event aims to bring together practitioners who work in African history, politics, culture and arts, whether you are an organisations, individual, small business or if you have an interest in the way that African heritage is portrayed, celebrated, commemorated and written and spoken about. It aims to build upon the good work started by Akyaaba Addai Sebbo and other activists in 1987 who set up Black History Month as a month long activity each October and to consider new directions for Black History Month which will build links, foster collaboration, maximize promotion and publicity for African heritage, and offer up ways and initiatives forward. As social historian and publisher Eric Huntley states "Last year was the 25 anniversary of the founding of BHM in the UK and a number of meetings were held with the aim of reviewing what we have achieved so as to help us in charting a way forward. No conclusion was arrived at." This event is an opportunity to do just that.
Join us in two sessions that offer a chance to take part and have your say: an afternoon of discussion and break out groups on African Heritage themes from 2 – 5.30pm and
An evening programme of presentations by guest speakers, public debate that offers ways forward, and entertainment from 6.30pm – 9pm.
A full programme will follow in due course.

Is this the oldest living civilisation?
The oldest relations to the first human beings are still living today in central and east Africa . There is strong suggestion that the Ancient Egyptians were descended from this civilisation. London-based cultural researcher and writer Felicity Heywood travelled to Uganda earlier this year to hear and record some of their stories. Come and hear her reports of the Batwa, a people who are landless, and trying hard to keep their original culture alive amidst external pressure to conform. More http://bit.ly/WMeQa1
