BBMM2013 (British Black Music Month 2013) Heads Up: Debate, Live Music & Talking Copyright
Whilst you have to wait till the mid-May official launch of BBMM2013 programme in order to book, we thought we'd give BBM/BMC subscribers some BBMM2013 heads-up.
After 10 years or so during which the term "black music" has been used hundreds of times in our website, emails and offline events, we've decided to grapple with a terminology that underpins our very existence. The 'What Is Black Music?' debate takes place on Saturday June 1 at the Marylebone campus of the University of Westminster. As a departure from previous debates, this will be short and very concise. affair. However those interested in deliberations would be glad to know that it forms part of an all-day series of seminars organised as a soft launch of the university's Black Music Research Unit. You can wrap up the evening by joining us for some real, souuulful, live music. We'll be joining the MusicConnex crew for the MCX Live Showcase, which is the official BBMM2013 launch live event. This showcase is MCX's biggesty yet. It features two US and six UK artists, consisting of Honey Larochelle (Brand New Heavies), Acantha Lang, Tasita D'Mour, Izzy Bizu, Nate Williams, Sherry Davis, Root and Groove Element, and Charlene. It kicks off from 7.30pm at Labroke Grove’s The Flyover. Grab the early bird £5 (full price £15) prices whilst they are available, and don’t wait to take a chance hoping you may win one of the free BBMM compo tickets! Friday June 21 is the date for the 'Talking Copyright: Should Copyright Be Owned By Creators Rather Than Corporations?’ seminar. We're organising this in association with MMF (Music Managers' Forum) at MMF's new premises in Tileyard Studios, north of King's Cross. The inspiration behind the topic is from the FAC (Featured Artists Coalition) statement: "Copyrights should be owned by creators rather than corporations". Expect a lively debate! We've got another compo for a BBMM recommended gig - and you have two opportunities to enter, in May and June. We're offering 12 tickets to catch the Juliet Fletcher in CHRIST 40th Year in UK Gospel Testimonial Concert, which takes place Saturday June 29, 6.30pm at Ruach City Church, 122 Brixton Hill, London SW2 12RS. Click for more info or to book or read about the compo below. Please note that our official wrap up of BBMM2013 with the Your Fave BBMM Videos club night at Upstairs @ The Ritzy has been moved back a day to Saturday July 20. So hopefully you should be able to attend without feeling flustered, having rushed from work! The early part consists of a rundown of Britain's most popular BBM videos, before the proper DJs get on the deck to provide us with a selection of British black music. Expect fun, freebies, as we let our hair down! For those that do not know: British Black Music Month (BBMM) is a BritishBlackMusic.com/Black Music Congress (BBM/BMC) initiative started in 2006. It takes place throughout June into mid-July. BBMM offers an opportunity to celebrate domestic black music, discuss issues, better understand the music industry & copyright issues, and network. It uses a wide range of platforms, from debates, music industry courses, radio specials, live gigs, club nights, film nights, fairs, networking events, and Talking Copyright seminars. It’s not aimed exclusively at Africans nor at just those in the music industry. BBM/BMC works with partners to deliver its programmes. If you're a potential partner or would like to deliver a programme under the BBMM2013 banner, do get in touch. Cick to see BBMM2012 events and previous BBMM events. |

Friday 28 June at V&A Museum , London
Visiting Arts Provides tools to the arts, heritage and cultural sectors to work more intelligently and efficiently abroad.
UK funds for the arts are becoming increasingly difficult to access. Visiting Arts can help you consider funds available throughout the EU. In the afternoon session, Yvette Vaughan Jones will help you navigate the mental and structural process of putting together an international project. In a hands-on approach, you will investigate the "why, how and with whom" of international working.
