Marta Moreno Vega is a New York based Afro-Puerto Rican producer whose
film Cuando Los Espíritus Bailan Mambo has been celebrated as the
first to explore the complexity of Afro-Cuban traditions without
resorting to pedestrian notions of exotica and primitivism.

This absorbing documentary charts the history and continuing legacy of
the sacred African religion, Le Regla de Ocha (known as Santeria), as
practised in Cuba, and in particular looks at the influence of
religious music on the development of Cuban popular music styles
including son (salsa), rhumba, mambo, timba, Latin jazz and Cuban
hip-hop. The film features interviews with priests, priestesses,
scholars and musicians including Yoruba Andabo and Clave Y Guaguanco,
as well as interviews with and performances by Mario Bauza, Frank
Grillo, Mongo Santamaria and Tito Puente, among others; and also
Pancho Quinto, Puntilla and others who have also passed over to the
realm of the ancestors.
As developing practices in the formation of Cuban civil society, the
Yoruba belief systems survived and traveled from Africa to Cuba and
New York through sacred rituals, songs, music and dance. Armed with
the energy of their ancestral rituals and customs, enslaved Africans
carried La Regla de Ocha as protective shields believing in the power
of a spiritual force for endurance, identity and empowerment.

South American connections

The AAM’s Brazilian leader Rodolfo Richter and acclaimed Colombian soprano Juanita Lascarro star in a programme revealing connections between the music of seventeenth- and eighteenth- century South American composers and their European contemporaries. The Spanish and Portuguese settlement of South America began at the turn of the sixteenth century, and European culture took hold over the following decades as the colonisers’ influence on the continent deepened. Some European musicians travelled to the New World to take up positions within the colonial hierarchy: Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, for example, served as superintendent of an armoury and Chief Justice of a Peruvian province. Domenico Zipoli, on the other hand, was one of a group of Jesuit missionaries who travelled to Paraguay . And, over time, second- and third- generation settlers began to make their livelihoods in music — including the Brazilian composer José Joaquim Emerico Lobo de Mesquita. Many of these musical greats enjoyed real prominence in South America long after their deaths — but they failed to gain widespread recognition in Europe . We right that wrong, showcasing music from the Old World alongside masterworks from the New.

Don't miss Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes coming up next month at the Barbican

Thursday 18 November 7.30pm

Chucho Valdes & The Afro Cuban Messengers

+ Ibrahim Maalouf

Part of the London Jazz Festival in association with BBC Radio 3

Produced by the Barbican

An exciting double-bill which celebrates the global reach of today’s jazz.

Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés, a virtuoso even by the exacting standards of Latin jazz, started his first trio at the age of 16 and founded Irakere in 1972 while playing with the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna. A two-handed, inventive and fluid pianist, Valdés combines the influences of jazz greats like Art Tatum and McCoy Tyner with his Afro-Cuban roots to dramatic effect. Irakere’s music, largely written and arranged by Valdes, ranged over all kinds of combinations of Latin rhythms, jazz and rock, and the group became one of the most famous ensembles ever to emerge from Cuba . Its influence can still be heard in groups like NG La Banda or Charanga Habanera as well as in Cuban jazz. For this Barbican concert he brings his new octet the Afro Cuban Messengers, performing tracks from their eagerly anticipated new release Chucho's Steps (Harmoni Mundi). The CD, which ranges from danzón and chachachá to R&B flavours, includes tributes to the Marsalis family and Joe Zawinul; Chucho has said, ‘it is the best instrumental album I have recorded in my life.’

Opening the evening is French/Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf, who uniquely combines jazz and classical Arabic music. Born in 1980 in Lebanon under the bombs of a civil war, Ibrahim Maalouf was uprooted from his motherland and lived his exile in France . He kept the music of his childhood buried inside for many years, but later his homesickness helped him to develop his own musical world. He studied modern, classical, baroque and contemporary concertos, and at the same time was surrounded by Arabic classical, ethnic and traditional music. Ibrahim discovered trumpet with his father Nassim Maalouf, who invented the quarter-tone trumpet (with a fourth valve) in the 1960's enabling the instrument to reproduce Arabic musical modes. As a boy, Ibrahim dreamt of becoming an architect in order to rebuild Lebanon . Instead, he built his life around that country's rich and mixed heritage which he now communicates through his music. Ibrahim was recently named Discovery of the Year at the 2010 French Jazz Music Awards and has played with renowned artists such as Amadou et Mariam, Matthieu Chédid (M), Marcel Khalifé, Sting, Salif Keita, Toumani Diabate, and more. His latest CD Diasporas will be released in the UK on 15th of November.

Plus, on the Freestage 6.00pm – 7.00pm

Younger Zen

Formed last year, Younger Zen are a British group who draw liberally on calypso and steel pan traditions, funk and rock and whose members hail from the Congo , England and Trinidad . With a percussive, dancefloor-friendly sound, they play African-Caribbean music made in London .

LONDON LATIN AMERICAN

FILM FESTIVAL

20th Edition

Festival: 19th - 28 th Nov 2010

Launch: 17th Nov 2010,

The London Latin American Film Festival (“ Excellencia Latina” award 2005) is one of London’ s best established and most respected annual cultural events, and this year it is screening a selection of the strongest new Latin American feature films, documentaries and shorts.

Celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year and coinciding with the bicentenary of Latin American independence from Spain, the London Latin American Film Festival is your guide through an ever more sophisticated and diverse cinematic landscape.

Firstly, the launch night features a screening of the gorgeous animated feature “Chico and Rita ”, a love story across the Mambo clubs of 40’s Havana and Harlem , with an original soundtrack by Bebo Valdés.

Then, on the opening night at the Riverside Studios we have a special treat: Laura Lindemann, a young German opera singer, is opening the Festival and setting the mood for the night with her beautiful mezzo-soprano voice, as an introduction to the Argentine film “ Felicitas” an historical extravaganza!

The many other highlights include emerging talent from Cuban cinema: the stunning

political thriller “City in Red”, the sumptuous, neon, neo-Noire feature Neuralgia and the

powerful “Memories of Overdevelopment” a sequel to the towering “Memories of Underdevelopment”, a classic of Cuban Cinema.

“Impulse” is again a compulsive thriller set in the Ecuadorian remote countryside and the compelling Colombian “ My Kidnapper” documents the life of a man held hostage by guerrillas, when an email relationship with his kidnappers ensues after his release. Then, young filmmakers of Chile contribute a left field take on the Road Movie tradition with “ Tour” and “ Ultramar”, as well as the fascinating “April 31st” which explores the distinction between documentary and fiction.

The Festival is also presenting some extraordinary documentaries and short films from emerging talents: Among the many: “ El Puesto” , a portrait of one man and his relationship with the natural world, cannot be beaten. “Revolution” counts as probably the most controversial Cuban film of recent years, the press was banned from its only showing in Havana , while the poignant “Vainilla Chip” tells the story of an ordinary day for a widower, an ice-cream maker, permeated with his sense of longing.

As an absolute contrast in tone, “The Crab, The Crocodile and Love in Cuba ” portrays a small, vibrant Cuban community with the exuberant art of world famous ceramicist Fuster at its heart.

This is just a taste of the cinematic delight awaiting you....

Some of the Highlights:

- Charity Event in aid of “Children of the Andes ” with Eastern Colombian music from Diego Laverde and Screening “My Kidnapper”.
- Peruvian Night. Screening “ Altiplano” supported by Cusqueña beer.
- CLOSING NIGHT. Screening “ The Belle of the Alhambra”, followed by cocktail reception.

elements that make up the dance and try to work on them in order to
be a stronger dancer. A well structured warm up, using elements of
contemporary, Jazz, footwork drills, partner work,
musicality exercises, choreography work, the toughest and ultimately
the most rewarding class around.
