Feedback33 is a Professional Dancers' mentoring forum set up by Sheron Wray. An opportunity to take part in various dance techniques with teachers from around the globe. It is a chance to gain insights into the passions, challenges, and experiences of various artists and teachers.

Michaela Leslie-Rule leads an introduction to Dunham technique, primarily focusing on creating rhythm in the lower spine and articulating that rhythm throughout the body.

Katherine Dunham was an African-American dancer, musician and cultural anthropologist (1909-2006) who studied dance and ritual in the context of the African Diaspora and was the first person to perform "primitive" dance on American and European stages. Her technique is a mixture of modern and Afro-Caribbean dance forms, heavily influenced by Haitian and Cuban folkloric traditions.

A true story of survival told through music and dance.
Africa’s Hope uses the real life testimonies of survivors of the Rwandan genocide as a backbone to the show and blends them with traditional Intore dance, Kinyarwanda singing, contemporary dance and movement, and live East African drumming to bring the incredible energy and irresistible rhythms of Africa into the UK .

An emotionally charged and vibrant show telling amazing true stories of survival. While this production conveys the brutality of the conflict, it also highlights the universal lessons of individual responsibility. manifestation helped him endure a life fraught with poverty and danger. The film
is an intimate portrait of Russo, his wife and sons and his loyal group of
students who claim that Russo's love, knowledge and guidance have been an
inspiration to them. A remarkable and engaging individual, Russo details
Capoeira's place wider Brazilian culture and history supported by a wealth of

Both are going to plan, Muhammad Ali and Me opens this week at the Oval theatre and if you are interested in theatre and politics of the day you will be find this show to be interesting. It is written by Mojisola Adebayo and I am the Director of the show - there is some dance, lots of movement and some singing too. There are 3 actors one is Jacqui Beckfrd the BSL interpreter - she is amazing. Mojisola is a commanding performer and a very effective Producer. Some will remember she came in to do a workshop for us about 2 years go after the Moj of the Antarctic show. Here's the link if you want to come its 6 quid concessions which is not bad. Its selling very well already. Its from 11-29th November.www.ovalhouse.com/cn/event_details.php?sectionid=theatre&eventid=298&searchid=currenThe Jazz muaic youth project is going well and maybe next time around this HLF project will have a dance dimension to it. The students have been enthralled by Leon Robinsion's heritage sessions which gave them insight into the history of black british performance. They have their first performance at the London Jazz festival on Saturday 15th November - its at 3pm - and its free so come and check it our, its part of the Herbie Hancock session. www.jazzalive.co.ukI hope classes have been going well and that you have been richly rewarded by the events of this week. Quite frankly it is the most inspirational thing to have happened in our life time. Do't let anyone tell you you can't do it- this is the overriding message and also the power of community. As a collective Feedback 33 has not reached it potential beacuse its power resides in you the members and its what you want that will drive it and coming together to make things happen is what Zela has been trying to do. All suggestions as to how it can be done better are also welcome. It may be time for an overhaul!Take inspiration and keep striving. See you before the year ends I hope. Stay well and encouraged. WHO NEEDS BALLET WHEN WE’VE GOT STREET DANCE?
21 October, 7pm-9pm at Vibe Live, 91 – 95 Brick Lane , London E1 6QL
By all accounts, we are now a nation of non-stop groovers. The Dance Manifesto, launched in 2006, tells us that dance is the fastest growing art form, with millions of people both attending performances and taking part. ‘Community dance’ is the grassroots phenomenon du jour, radically changing the idea that dance as an art form is only about men-in-tights and women-in-tutus. And the most cutting-edge community dance is Street Dance – from hip-hop to krumping – which has been identified by the Department of Children, Schools and Families as an exciting new art form in need of more recognition and public funding. It seems ballet is losing its privileged status, but should is it a case of out with the old and in with the new, or is there something to be said for the elitism of ballet?
In 1968, following the assassination of Martin Luther King, the legendary dancer and choreographer Arthur Mitchell returned to New York to set up the Dance Theatre of Harlem to ‘disprove the myth that Negroes can’t do classical ballet’ – a striking contrast to the attitude shown by those now championing community dance. Can something like Street Dance compete with the choreographic traditions and disciplines that have allowed classical ballet choreographers from Balanchine to Wheeldon to continue to astound audiences with their work? Is the opposition between ballet and new dance forms a false one, now that choreographers like Russell Maliphant are incorporating capoeira into classical ballet technique? What role does ballet have in the modern world of dance?
THIS DEBATE WILL FEATURE A SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY IAN ARCHER-WATTERS OF THE SWAN TO CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS LA CYGNE
Speakers:
Ian Archer-Watters, ballet dancer, Les Ballets Grandiva and Fort Worth Ballet
Hugh Durrant, designer of many dance shows from the Royal Ballet and La Scala Milan to Cher 's Vegas show including West End Musicals.
Veronica Lewis MBE, Director, London Contemporary Dance School
Alan Miller, co-director, NY Salon; director and producer, TV and documentaries; cultural commentator; co-founder of London 's Truman Brewery and Vibe Bar.

Disposable People: Contemporary Global Slavery

27 September - 9 November 2008, Royal Festival Hall, The Clore Ballroom, London
Image: Alex Webb/ Magnum Photos, Dominican Republic, 2007.

A Hayward Touring exhibition in collaboration with
Autograph ABP and Magnum Photos .

'Slavery in the contemporary world is what it has been since the beginning of human history - the complete control of one person by another. Violence is at the heart of that control, and the aim is profit.'

Kevin Bales, President of Free the Slaves

Today, over 200 years after the abolition of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, an estimated 27 million people worldwide are still locked into slavery and servitude across the globe. This major new photography exhibition, organised by Hayward Touring in collaboration with the photographic agencies Autograph ABP and Magnum Photos will take an in-depth look at the prevalence of slavery and injustice in the 21st century through the lenses of eight internationally acclaimed documentary photographers. The exhibition begins at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre and will be toured to venues across the UK. For more information please visit www.autograph- abp.co.uk.

The Centre for Postcolonial Studies at Goldsmiths is organising a conference on the “Afterlives of Postcolonialism”- the ‘after’ referring both to its life/lives after the proclamation of its death, and also to its life after/outside the study of literature. In what ways can/has postcolonial theory been taken up by artists.....

Black Heritage Week @ The Bernie Grant Centre

Three or four days of creative programming that make maximum use of the Bernie Grant Centre - several artforms animate the various disconnected spaces that make up the Bernie Grant Centre and see the centre working as one cohesive whole.

The Centre comprises an auditorium with seating for over 200 people, a cafe and exhibition spaces, a large reception area, upper floor conference rooms and a dance studio with sprung floor. The Black Heritage theme has an obvious resonance with the work and aspirations of Bernie Grant - one of the first Black MP's in the UK and a lifelong activist for a fairer Britain.

Planned programme - still fluid and evolving - looks like this:

Friday 24th October - Black Heritage Childrens Day - Students from the Broad Water Farm Estate primary school will work with a performance arts group for a week beforehand to stage a performance at the BGAC.. A puppet show, Creative Art workshops, carnival costumes, graffiti workshop and street dancing and a two act musical gospel play - The Journey.

Saturday 25th October - Black Heritage Family Day - Craft and Artisan stalls, Retail selling exhibitions of visual arts, books, music, food, emerging designers etc. Performances of Agamemnon - the Greek Classical drama - in an African setting and Call Mr Robeson - a life in songs about Paul Robeson -award winning one act play . [This is the first day of the mid term holidays and will enjoy an enthusiastic turn out]

Sunday 26th - Gospel Brunch in partnership with a Tottenham pentecostal church.

Monday - 27th - Summit Plenary session - Towards a Pan African Media strategy. Keynote speakers from A 24 Media, Kenya, National Black Programming Consortium USA, Henry Bonsu - Colourful Radio etc - [ To be confirmed]

Break out sessions and workshops on Theatre, Education, Music, the Creative Economy, each with intelligent and informed facilitators, each of whom is responsible for putting together their portion of the programme together.

- Dinner / Concert in the main auditorium -an eclectic evening of AfroClassical music from a gifted selection of musicians. The event is free but several different co-hosts are being invited to invite guests and make up tables, to ensure a diverse and interesting mix of guests.

Partnerships for the various segments will include, Colourful Radio, New Nation,The Voice, BBC London, CNN Inside Africa, The Guardian, etc. We welcome partnerships, suggestions, sponsorships and a collective aspiration to create an event where the whole, is more than the sum of its parts. One which we believe that with our collective involvement will be the definitive event for Black History month and a sustainable yearly event.

The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD)

Historic ‘Black Dance’ Photographic Exhibition returns to London

4 August 2008 – 28 November 2008
Stratford Circus
Theatre Square, Stratford, London EC15 1BX
Free Entrance
Doors Open: Monday to Sunday 10.00 - 18.00
After a successful launch at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden and a tour to the midlands, the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) has transferred its photographic exhibition to Stratford Circus in East London. The exhibition ‘Black Dance’ in Britain, 1930's to 1990's – Moments… highlights the enormous contribution made to theatrical dance by Black practitioners in Britain. Photographs featured have been sourced from leading photographers including Roger Wood, Dee Conway and Chris Nash as well as the archives of the National Resource Centre for Dance and the New York Public Library.
The exhibition explores issues of identity, racial representation and notions of diversity and ‘the mainstream’. Talented artists featured include: Namron, Cathy Lewis, Greta Mendez, Carol Straker, Sheron Wray and Kenneth Tharpe who performed with ‘mainstream’ companies such as Rambert Dance Company, London Contemporary Dance Theatre and English National Ballet. The exhibition also offers polemical debate with political material from Arts Council reports, and detail on the formation of organisations such as Minorities Arts Advisory Service (MAAS). It features images of MAAS Movers, Ekome, Adzido Pan African Dance ensemble and Kokuma Dance Theatre.
Other key dance companies featured that have shaped Black British Dance history include Phoenix Dance Theatre, ACE Dance and Music, the Jiving Lindy Hoppers, Carl Campbell Dance Company 7, JazzXchange, Bullies Ballerinas, Badejo Arts, RJC Dance Company, and Union Dance Company.
ADAD Director, Jeanette Bain says: “These photographs are national treasures and a great educational resource. They are a glimpse into some of the many untold stories of how much Black dance artists have contributed to British culture in spite of the difficulties they have faced.”
The exhibition was created with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England. The tour is supported by East London Dance, Portrait of a Nation, London Borough of Newham, Stratford Circus, and The Drum.
In December 2008, the exhibition will be moving on to The Drum arts centre in Birmingham where it will remain until the end of January 2009.
