ADAD Bloom Festival 2013
@ Pavilion Dance, Bournemouth
Next weekend Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens will come alive with the carnival vibe that is Bloom Festival.

ADAD and Pavilion Dance South West present Bloom, a festival celebrating dance from Africa and its Diaspora through performance, participation and discussion.

This year the festival will explore the creativity and symbolism of carnival and masquerade: performative rituals which are deeply rooted in African and Caribbean cultures.

We will be dancing on the terraces of Pavilion Dance in a full day of back to back workshops and performances from explosive Guinean ballet troupe Ballet Nimba , fiery Dancehall v African from Swedish dance hall sensation Sara Galan and dynamic Senegalese Sabar from Batch Gueye and friends.

As if this wasn’t enough, we’ll have an array of African inspired stalls on the terraces and Umoja Arts Network will be winding along the seafront and lower gardens with a spectacular carnival procession, follow them to a sensory explosion of African Caribbean arts and culture in The Triangle for all the family to enjoy.

Within one life, many lives. Within one woman, many women.
The threads of our lives weave in and out of each other
Some things seen, some things unseen
The meanings are obscure and arise in our interpretation

Woman is mother, daughter, sister, and wife
She is domestic, warrior, shaman, lover, worker, artist...
She is wild and playful, soft and powerful, receptive and expansive and intuitive
The land knows all her voices
The land speaks to her through their meeting

What do you see? Who do you recognise? How many of your internal women do you allow yourself to be?

On the land, of the land, for the land, and for all the women who came before and all those yet to come

THE GRIOT'S TALE
with Tunde Jegede, Patrice Naiambana, Bode Lawal, Taiwo Emmanuel Jegede, Sunara Begum
The Africa Centre is pleased to announce a run of a new performance piece The Griot's Tale, written and conceived by award-winning composer, Tunde Jegede, from 27 August to 2 September. The Griot's Tale represents a meeting point between music, poetry, dance and the visual image and features some of UK’s leading practitioners of African culture including choreographer Bode Lawal, actor and director Patrice Naiambana, visual artist and poet Taiwo Emmanuel Jegede, and filmmaker Sunara Begum to encourage new forms of storytelling. Exploring the role of a Griot both now and in the past, it is a story of a young man’s search for truth revealed through his journey into the unexpected and unknown.  Compelling and beautiful as a narrative piece, it draws from sacred and ritualistic aspects of African mysticism as well as presenting contemporary styles of performance.

Lumumba
Doors 2pm Film 2.30pm
The true story of the rise to power and brutal assassination of the formerly vilified and later redeemed leader of the independent Congo , Patrice Lumumba. Using newly discovered historical evidence, Haitian-born and later Congo-raised writer and director Raoul Peck renders an emotional and tautly woven account of the mail clerk and beer salesman with a flair for oratory and an uncompromising belief in the capacity of his homeland to build a prosperous nation, independent of its former Belgium overlords.

AHRC Professional Preparation Master’s Studentship (Musical Performance or Composition)

Canterbury Christ Church University invites applications for an AHRC studentship in musical performance or composition.  Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, under the Professional Preparation Masters scheme, the award will cover course fees and (for UK award holders) provide a tax-free stipend of £8,845. The award will be held in the Department of Music and Performing Arts. The successful candidate’s programme will commence in September 2013, and last one calendar year.

The closing date for the AHRC studentship applications is Monday 22nd July 2013.
As a student within The Department of Music and Performing Arts, you will be joining a dynamic community of practitioners and researchers, covering a broad range of specialisms, from Chamber Music, Commercial Music and Creative Music Technology to Dance, Drama and Technical Theatre. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed our department’s international standing. Research by nine members of staff was included, of which the great majority (75%) was judged to be at least internationally recognised, and 10% world- leading. The university has subsequently invested strongly in Music’s staffing and facilities, in order to support its growing international research reputation. Significant targeted investment in the department’s research environment has allowed the development of a strong series of research seminars and the hosting of several recent international conferences, attended by Krzysztof Penderecki (2009) and Arvo Pärt (2011). The department is noted for its collaborative research work, most especially with the Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival, offering its postgraduate composers and performers opportunities to participate in masterclasses, performances and workshops with, for example, Jonathan Harvey, Mark Anthony Turnage, Peter Hill, the London Sinfonietta, and Ensemble Klang. In addition to the department’s team of expert academic staff, Visiting Professors of Composition include Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Paul Patterson. In addition, many of our contracted and sessional staff are actively involved at national and international level in developing their subject areas.

The successful candidate will pursue the MMus full time, with a specialism in performance or composition. Candidates should hold a first class degree (or a good 2.1) in Music and must apply for the MMus programme simultaneously or in advance of applying for an AHRC studentship.  Further information about the Department of Music and Performing Arts at Canterbury Christ Church University is available at http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/arts-humanities/Music/Home.aspx
