Don’t forget to keep up to date with all Mandinga goings-on via our Facebook, Twitter, and Vimeo pages.

Zodiac All Stars Workshops

Between the 17th and 19th of July, Charles went to Nottingham to run workshops for Zodiac All Stars, a local youth carnival dance troupe. With their Mardi Gras themed performance at Nottingham Carnival approaching, they focused on making jester headdresses and heat formed foam float items. Charles was delighted to be working in the very heart of the community and the group produced some exciting work which featured in Nottingham Carnival.

STAMP HiStArt Workshops

On the 23rd and 24th of August Mandinga was back in Hamburg, leading a set of workshops at Kurt Tucholsky School, as part of the HiStArt project. Charles led workshops on two consecutive days helping out students who were there to complete their costumes to be worn at the Night Parade at STAMP, a festival celebrating an array of street arts. HiStArt is a two year project aimed at setting new standards in the field of street art, bringing together leading organisations from the UK (UKCCA), Hungary (Foundation Nyirbatorert), Germany (Haus Drei) and Denmark (Aalborg Karneval). As a contributor, Mandinga Arts helped deliver one of HiStArt’s key focuses: artistic education in schools.

Great British Carnival: Olympic Park

On Sunday 27th July, Mandinga took part in the Great British Carnival at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. In a celebration marking the midway point between the London and Rio Olympics, it was a packed day full of music, dance and carnival costumes from the likes of Paraiso School of Samba, Mahogany and Shademakers, all joining together for a spectacular ‘Carnival of the Animals’ finale.

Night of Festivals Touring - Leicester

For our final stop in the Night of Festivals Touring schedule, we headed to Leicester, with our intern Carys taking on the role of production manager. The Leicester event was the largest so far, with the ArtReach weekend featuring live music, carnival arts, a live silk painting, moving image and street theatre, in a festival celebrating the values of freedom and independence. Our Mandinga characters were joined by Rhythms of the City, Paraiso School of Samba and, for the first time, the fantastic Sabar Soundsystem, as we invaded the city centre along with community participants from Stagecoach, Scufflebox Theatre Company, Curve Young Company and other Leicester locals.
The weekend was a great success, with Theah Dix’s choreography bringing new elements to our characters. We look forward to collaborating with ArtReach again sometime soon!

Great British Carnival: Margate Carnival

Mandinga returned to Margate Carnival along with Great British Carnival on Sunday 3rd August. We enjoyed a sunny day at the seaside, with some Mandinga regulars and Margate locals joining us and Rhythms of the City as we paraded through the town. In November we’ll be joining Great British Carnival once again for Bridgwater Carnival.
Horniman Music Festival
To celebrate the end of summer, the Horniman Museum put on a Music Festival in their gardens, featuring bands from all around the world: Les Grooms, BronzeHead, Trans-Siberian March Band and Alejandro & the Magic Tombolinos. The day featured music, storytelling, family trails as well as two Mandinga carnival parades, joined by the incredibly talented and energetic Kinetika Bloco All Stars youth band.

The sunny day was a perfect end to the summer season, and as always we look forward to working with the wonderful Horniman Museum team again in the future.

Developing Animal Farm

For four weeks beginning in mid-September Julieta was engrossed in a Design and Print Workshop at the Morley College, developing a very exciting new character for the ongoing Animal Farm project. Through these workshops Julieta has been exploring the use of traditional and experimental screen printing techniques. She aims to print in her own studio, combining these new methods with techniques she is already much used to: silk painting, devore, pleating, dye and using the heat press, carving and vacuum forming. Although the new character is still being developed as we speak, we can reveal that 3D photo printing is on the cards.

Ladies and gentlemen behold the newest member of our cast, The Chicken!

Bestival Carnival Parade

On the 6th September, Mandinga headed to Isle of Wight once again to join the carnival celebrations on day three of this year’s Bestival.
Our costumes came to life with performers from Bristol based group Hype, Lost & Found and a group of professional dancers from Bestival’s Port stage, with music from the likes of Kinetika Bloco and Batala. The Desert Island Disco-themed parade culminated at the Red Bull Music Stage, with our frogs and Haitian Voodoo dancers providing dazzling performances at this all-out disco finale.

Internship Programme

In September we bid farewell to our Project and Administrative Assistant intern, Carys Evans. Carys (pictured with Charles and Julieta) joined us at the end of March and stayed with us on an extended placement to work on our summer events, like Waterloo Carnival, and even took a hand at project managing Night of Festivals Leicester!
“Working at Mandinga has given me the chance to work with a whole group of new people and artists in a new and exciting environment, learning about the vibrant and inspiring world of carnival.I’ve been very inspired by this world, with its inter-disciplinary approach and the way in which it can be accessed by so many people, and I’m looking forward to working with similar organisations in the future either directly or indirectly. The people I’ve met through this programme have been truly inspiring, and for my next step I will be working with a participatory theatre workshop programme in Ghana, pioneering social change – values and methodologies that I have seen in the carnival world and in people I have met during my time here.”
This month we welcome our next Project and Administrative Assistant intern, Thisbe Casellini, who will be with us until December 2014, assisting us in the office and at Bridgwater Carnival. A History of Art graduate, Thisbe has spent the last year volunteering at a mental health arts charity. Besides that she is the co-creator and senior editor of The Patchwork Paper (an online platform for writers and visual artists) and she is a member of AXNS Collective, aimed at bridging the gap between the Sciences and the Arts.
“My motivations for joining Mandinga Arts are many: the democratic feel of taking over the streets, the strong focus on hand crafted objects, the interdisciplinary nature of carnival arts and the power of such art to inspire and form communities. I am very much looking forward to learning about the ins and outs of running such an innovative, vivacious and fun-loving organisation.”
Artistic Placement
In July, Rachel Kemp joined us for two weeks on an artistic work placement, working in the studio with Charles and Julieta, and helping to prepare for the workshops in Nottingham, and for Night of Festivals in Leicester. Rachel joined us for the event in Leicester, helping with the puppets and joining in as a sexy cow! Rachel will now be going into her final year of Costume Design and Making at Nottingham Trent University – we wish her all the best.
Past Intern Updates

After leaving us in July 2010, Jilly Hurden went into events production and administration, organising and assisting on outdoor events, before moving into dance.
“I went to work as the Dance Administrator for The Point, Eastleigh, one of the South's most notorious dance venues. In this role I was responsible for coordinating dance classes, a youth dance company, educational workshops and the hundreds of other dance based projects the venue offers. Alongside this job I was also a part time, freelance dance teacher, teaching on community dance events and on BTEC and GCSE dance courses in Schools in Hampshire. After two years in these roles, I decided to further my teaching experience by completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education for Dance Teaching at The Royal Academy of Dance, London. Since graduating from the RAD in 2013, I have been working as a Dance Teacher at an all girls’ school in Greater London.”
Jilly has been back with Mandinga since; working with us to deliver our involvement in Bestival Carnival Parade last year, and assisting us with Night of Festivals Touring rehearsals in Leicester this year.
