The Afro-Latin Lounge

The countdown has begun to the opening event of Lakes Alive 2012, the world premiere of a spectacular new show by Les Commandos Percu which will be performed in Bowness-on-Windermere on Thursday 21 June at around 10pm.

Les Commandos Percu by Daniel Saint Leger

Les Commandos Percu by Kev Ryan

On The Night Shift will set the skies alight with a blaze of light and fireworks when it launches the London 2012 Festival on June 21. The show will follow the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the Lake District town, with celebrations beginning on The Glebe from 6pm.

Those of you who saw Les Commandos Percu at Platt Fields Park a few years ago need no introduction to these French wizards of percussion and pyrotechnics but for the first time Commandos Percu will perform with a group of specially-selected artists from the UK which will take their performance to a new level.

The technically-complex show combines pyrotechnics, music and dance and critics are already tipping the event as one of the must-see highlights of the festival, which is designed to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Commandos Percu artistic director Raymond Gabriel says: “From the first encounters between the French and British artists something remarkable happened. There is a real feeling that we are creating something very powerful.”

Each musician will play a unique instrument that has been specially made for the show. All of the drums have been hand-crafted by local French artisans using several kinds of tight skins fixed on flat sounding boards to create their own individual sound.

The seven dancers – one of whom is a founder member of award-winning STOMP - will perform in perfect harmony with the music and fireworks. They will be wearing costumes designed by students from The University of Central Lancashire.

The will be another opportunity to see the show on September 9 as part of the finale of the Preston Guild.

An emphasis is placed on movement dynamics and the precise relationship between body parts and the energy of polyrhythmic African drumming.

BBM Newsletter June 1 2012

Greetings,

If you’re receiving our newsletter for the first time – welcome. Remember, if it’s not to you liking or you’ve got multiple copies, please use the unsubscribe to be removed or to remove alternatiove emails addresses.

British Black Music Month (BBMM2012) kicked off to a flying start yesterday (May 31). We had a quick run through of the last 10 years in regards to the development of our organisations, BritishBlackMusic.com/Black Music Congress (BBM/BMC) and BTWSC, presented tokens to some of the people that have supported both organisations along the way; and we ended with a debate on how far British black music has come in the last ten years.

Obviously there were differences of opinions. Some felt the sector had moved forward, whilst others felt it had regressed.

In spite of the recent chart successes (mainly singles, though at the time of writing, Emeli Sande’s ‘Our Version Of Events’ is back at the top of the album charts for the third time), a view appreciated by many was expressed by Wozzy Brewster OBE, founder of The Midi Music Company.

She said that British black music was at the stage where it was “bubbling just beneath the surface” and with better engagement of the opportunities offered by social media, mainstream success is within the grasp of many like never before.

However, she cautioned that for that success to be sustainable, music industry education for artists and their support networks, is key. That’s why BBMM, which started in 2006, has always provided accessible music industry masterclasses and seminars for participants to not only improve their knowledge in areas such as contracts, copyright, marketing and income streams, but also improve their contacts and networks.

“We’ve not only got accessible music industry courses, we’ve even developed with BTWSC accredited courses for those that want a certificate, covering music industry, event planning, and African history,” added BBM/BMC founder Kwaku. “And perhaps more importantly, we end this year’s BBMM with the Making Sense Of How The Music Industry Works & Preparing A Music Business Plan Workshop on July 21st.”

Thanks to all those who attended the launch, and those who sent apologies in advance of the event. Although we had a good attendance, as with the last few events, the pre-bookings have been over-subscribed. But on the day a good proportion do not turn up, do not give advance notice of not turning up, and deny those on the waiting list an opportunity.

Hence from now on, the policy for our free events is that although one must pre-book, you can not book more than one place per transaction, and seatng will be on a first come, first served basis. And just to put you on notice, although we film (and photograph) our events, participants must have the express permission of the organisers to film or record our events. Also, please be mindful when filling in your email – a few people have booked with typos in their email addresses, which means they don’t receive the order confirmation and followup updates Plus, in the interest of the environment, you don’t have to print tickets for our events.

Sadly our re-designed website was not finished in time for the launch, so we’re posting our events at www.BBM.eventbrite.com, where you’ll find some of the BBMM2012 events, although there’s more to be added later.

In the meantime, the weekend is here, and for those who fancy raving in London town, we have two competitions for early-bird respondents – please make sure you can attend before entering!

This evening (Friday) is the G Mag Shakedown Part 3 (Summer Ball edition) – “Another Night When Stars Come Out” with the likes of Kele Le Roc, MC Cameo hosting, and Prezedent on the decks on the Tereza Joanne boat in Woolwich. We have 3 tickets to give away. If you can attend and fancy a ticket click here.

We've got 2 pairs of ticktets for Sunday's We Love Soul Jubilee Bank Holiday club night at south-east London's Hidden Club with Paul 'Trouble' Anderson and loads of DJs covering 10 years of soulful house, and Aitch B, Fitzroy Da Buzzboy etc covering 80s classics, soul funk etc. And Shaun Escoffery will be there for a live PA of his hits such as ‘Space Rider’ and ‘Days Like This’ – I was lucky enough to catch Shaun’s set at New York’s Shelter club – the place was teeming with club luminaries such as DJ Spinna, Timmy Regisford, and Louie Vega, which resulted in me getting two or three articles on Shaun in Bilboard magazine. Hey, that reminds me, my passport is 10 years and due for a renewal! If can make it and fancy a pair of ticket, click here.

With our new website (the old website www.Britishblackmusic.com is still up there, it’s our web developer’s old website that some of you found to be hijacked!) not ready, it means you’ll have to wait a while longer to be able to subscribe to the newsletters of your choice. If in the meantime what we’re sending is not of interest you can either wait till we get our act together, or unsubscribe by hitting the unsubscribe link below.

Have an enjoyable extended weekend, and look out for further competitions including 1-2-1s with a PR expert and a music industry/IP lawyer, a free music technology taster course; Talking Copyright seminar (June 21); BBMM radio specials; Music Biz Empowerment Half-Day courses (July 3/10); Who I Am & What I Do networking evening (July 12); films all-dayer; records & African crafts fair (July 14); Marcus Garvey, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Jamaican/Trinidadian commemoration related events, including Garvey + Rasta + Music = Better Communities (June 19) and British Reggae & Lover's Rock: A Product Of Migration (July 15 – part of a fundraising drive at West Indian Association Of Service Personnel); ending with Making Sense Of How The Music Industry Works & Preparing A Music Business Plan Workshop (July 21).

Remember, www.BBM.eventbrite.com is the place to check out all the BBMM2012 events.

Oh, I saw ‘Red Tails’ preview last Sunday – long, but superb, the biopic film about the heroic exploits of the all-African-American Tuskeegee airmen produced by George, is highly recommended. Please go see it. Your support would help Hollywood be open to telling other African stories, besides the usual gangsta and ghetto-centric ones. It opens across Britain June 6: http://www.facebook.com/RedTailsUK.

Another Oh - we’ve joined Twitter at: https://twitter.com/#!/bbmbmc, and I’ll be catching the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor: the life of the Black British musician (1875-1912) talk tonight (6.30pm) by Jeffrey Green at Battersea Library, 246 Lavender Hill, London SW11. It’s free: www.historysocialaction.co.uk/wandsworth-heritage-festival-2012, and the G Mag Shakedown Part 3 party, and on Sunday the Diaspora Debating Association (DDA) debate ‘African’ or ‘Black’ the most appropriate term to describe us as a people? At Westgreen Learning Centre/Park View Academy, Tottenham N15 3RB. It’s free. For more info: contact T 07903321076 or Contact: J 07908796167
