Hello beautiful people!

Here we are in midsummer and what a magical time it is! London always comes into its own in the summer months and what better place to be than in a city bursting at the seams with inspirational, creative people and events. Read on for just a few of the things EDC recommend checking out in July. For those of you who are new to our work or would like to know more, we have included a little synopsis of what we are about below. Of course please feel free to take a look at our updated website for lots more information and pictures: www.elementdance.co.uk

Element Dance in a nutshell

Element Dance Company was established in 2005 by Ella Mesma following extensive international dance training namely in Rio de Janeiro and New York. The company has since grown from strength to strength and continues to push boundaries thanks to the group’s positive energy and dedication to the art of dance.

EDC is interested in the exploration and development of various Latin dance styles within performance and theatre, all the while incorporating elements of Contemporary and Urban dance.

Whilst specialising in Salsa, Samba, Afro Cuban and Afro Brazilian dance forms, the presence of the dances of the Orixa is a major component of the EDC ethos. The four Gods: Oxum, Oya, Oxossi and Xango (representing the elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water) are the source of inspiration for our pieces.

Among some of the other styles we work with are Waacking, House, Breaking and Contemporary Dance. EDC also envelops concepts of embodiment taken from Yoga practice.

Previous gigs

After three months of polishing and reworking, the long-awaited performance of ‘Birds Of Paradise’ at El Grande on 21st June was a momentous event! Ella’s latest choreography is a fusion of Samba and Contemporary Dance with a Hip Hop feel (the score is a beat-boxing track by the talented Marv-Ill Superlungs). The piece was inspired by the curious Bird of Paradise and aims to take the concept of samba to new levels.

The girls were supported by an amazing crowd who had some lovely things to say about us. We’ve shared a few pieces of feedback below. And check out the video too! We’d love to hear what you think:  http://youtu.be/w6NaUN0JMlo

"Really innovative, raw, and brave...I loved it! And you even moved like birds!" (Chris Bicourt, Mestre Sala, Paraiso School of Samba).

“Ella Mesma and her dancers are fiercer in flesh than in the imagination. They are pushing the norm of their craft boldy with sassiness and a fiery but dignified confidence in their execution…The privilege was mine.” (Sean Graham - Choreographer, Artistic Director and Producer).

"Having you there is such a treat, we are very fond of you, and your girls are a credit to you." (El Grande & Salsa Republic).

Evol at Cloud Dance

Ella will be performing another of her pieces, evol, at Cloud Dance Festival in July. The critically acclaimed solo, described as ‘unbashedly emotional’ by The Guardian, was inspired by research into the grey areas around sexual consent and rape within relationships. Please see the link for more details:

EDC Leeds News

Our Leeds girls had the pleasure of performing on Sunday 30th June for ‘100% Latino’ as part of Leeds Waterfront Festival. A big thanks going out to Azucar Bar & DJ Fabio Bahia (Made in Brazil Promotions).

Look out for us on 6th July when we’ll be performing and teaching Samba for an exciting cultural event in Durham. And our lovely Chris Benson will be teaching a Samba workshop on 7th July for Sunday School with iSalsa at La Boheme. Get in touch for more information.

Mexico: A Revolution in Art: 1910-1940: 6 July—29 September 2013, In The Sackler Wing of Galleries, Burlington House

“In 1910, revolution brought years of instability to Mexico but, in its aftermath, the artistic community flourished under state sponsored programmes designed to promote the ideals of the new regime. This exhibition will bring together work by Mexican artists at the forefront of the artistic movement including Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Also on display will be work by international artists and intellectuals who were drawn to the country by its political aspirations and the opportunities afforded to artists. Among them were Marsden Hartley, Josef Albers, Edward Burra, Paul Strand, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Breton and Robert Capa. 'Mexico: A Revolution in Art, 1910-1940' will reveal a cultural renaissance that drew in some of the most seminal figures of the 20th century, all of whom were inspired by the same subject: Mexico.”

And this is not to be missed! Check out B.Supreme on Friday 12th July...

An additional series of afternoon talks will fuel graduates and emerging professionals in the development of their careers, as well as informing them about the wider dance sector.

Refreshments will be provided between 1-2pm each day, where participants can meet each other informally over lunch, and continue conversations with workshop teachers.

Tricks of Memory - Exhibition by visiting Cuban Artist Sarahy Martinez

Memory plays tricks on us. Sometimes we think we have forgotten, that the past has died, that ancient dreams have been passed over and then one fine day in front of a sheet of white paper thinking my mind is completely empty, objects I saw some day, songs which my grandparents sang, sorrows, hopes, materialise through the ink of the drawing …all that which is there in memory…
In Sarahy’s work, texts taken from songs, poems and famous phrases that are part of Cuban culture acquire new significance. The hummi
ngbird, flowers, corn, and coffee are symbols Sarahy uses to let the viewer know who she is and where she is coming from.

Of all the symbols, the corn recurs most frequently. For Sarahy the corn is both the beginning and the end, reality and dream, man and divinity: “All the glory of the world fits inside one grain of corn”.

Exhibition open 27th June-10th July.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Sarahy Martinez (b 1970) studied at the prestigious Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana. She masters a range of media and techniques and her works have ranged from paintings, drawings and engravings to installations.

Sarahy has had numerous exhibitions in Cuba since 1991 and, although her artworks are in private collections all over the world, this is the first time her works have been exhibited in Europe. Some of her more significant solo exhibitions have been: “Confesiones” (Confesions) in 1998, Galería de 10 de Octubre, Havana; “Toda la gloria del mundo” (All the Glory in the World) in 2011, Galería-Taller Amelia Peláez, Havana; “Femenino Plural” (Femeninity in Plural) in 2012, within the 11th Bienal Internacional of Havana. Sarahy’s most noteworthy group exhibitions have been: “Engravings” in 1991, Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales, Havana; “Pintores cubanos” (Cuban Painters) in 2001, Palacio de las Convenciones, Havana; “Pintores retratistas” (Portrait Painters) in 2000, Feria Comercial de Sullivan, México and in 2008, The Morgan Gallery, Gran Caimán.

Besides pursuing her own work, she is Curator at the Galería de Arte 10 de Octubre in Havana.

With Glastonbury now sadly a distant memory for those of us who can still remember it, the Songlines team is taking a short break from the festivals to get the new issue (August/September, #94) off to press, before we pack our bags and head back out to the fields for Larmer Tree and WOMAD.
We’ll be hosting the artist CD signing sessions again throughout Larmer Tree Festival. Some of this year’s confirmed signings include Richard Thompson Trio, Sam Lee, Katy Carr, Lau and Steve Knightley.
If you’re joining us at WOMAD Charlton Park, don’t forget to come say hello at our main stand next to the Charlie Gillett Stage. We also have a second stand this year located between the Siam Tent and Main Stage.
We look forward to seeing you there!
