The Afro-Latin Lounge

SONS OF CUBA, an award winning feature documentary, was released at the ICA in London on 18th March and in arthouse cinemas nationwide from 30th March. The project has been a labour of love for young director Andrew Lang who spent a year living in Cuba in order to gain unprecedented access to the legendary Havana Boxing Academy, the state institution that breeds future boxing champions for the island that has dominated Olympic medals in the sport for the last few decades. SONS OF CUBA follows the stories of three young hopefuls through 8 dramatic months of training and education as they prepare for the biggest event of their lives so far: Cuba’s National Boxing Championship for Under-12s. But during the season, crisis strikes: Fidel Castro is taken ill and all of Cuba’s Olympic boxing champions defect to the USA. As the championship draws closer, the Cuba that the boys have been taught to believe in is at an historic crossroads.

Dear Music Lovers, Art Lovers and Caring Individuals

We wanted to send you details of a really worthwhile event we thought you might be interested in. It is not one of Cubacheche's events but if you read on you will see it features music by Cuban classical guitarist Ahmed Dickinson and includes photographic images of Cuba by James Sparshatt........

A few weeks ago gallery owner James Sparshatt of 3 Bedfordbury in Covent Garden, received a very moving email from a friend who had just returned from a mission to deliver aid to Haiti (see below). He wanted to help but had no idea how. After chatting it over with with a number of fellow gallerists and artists he decided to hold a special evening in the gallery to support long term aid in Haiti.

Many artists have generously provided work for the event, including renowned painter David Cottingham, BP shortlisted artist Beka Smith, multi award winning photographer David Zimmerman and other artists in collaboration with a number of international galleries.

For entertainment the wonderful virtuoso classical guitarist, Ahmed Dickinson from Cuba will be performing with soprano Sofie Almroth. There will also be an auction of donated works with a special guest auctioneer. You will also learn more about the work of the International Medical Corps and the special challenges in Haiti.

Please see below an invitation to attend the Gallery for what will be a really fine evening, with all proceeds from ticket sales and the auction, as well as a percentage of any artwork sold going to an extremely worthy cause.

We know the notice is short, but please do try to go along if you're free and know that you'll be contributing in some way to help alleviate the continuing challenges being faced in Haiti.

There are only a few tickets left for the event which is on Thursday 25th March, so if you are able to and would like to attend please let the organisers know as soon as possible. The tickets are £25 each. (If you would really like to come the gallery can consider donations for the tickets if the event is not sold out.) Your invitation ia attached.

This is the email that inspired James to do something...........

Dear James
I got back late on Sunday night. It was one of the more difficult trips I have done. I took a cargo plane out of Miami filled with essential medicine and equipment with the guys I work with on The Darfur Project. We distributed it throughout the mobile clinics with the help of International Medical Corps who are also our partners in Darfur. I still can't really explain how bad the vibe was... just the smell of death and suffering everywhere. There are still bodies stacked up like firewood, arms and legs hanging out of bits of rubble .... it really was the apocalypse. I went to one of the refugee camps which used to be a golf course... thirty thousand people just living under bits of sheets and sticks. But when we arrived with the medicine they all lined up really peacefully and then prayed in song before anyone was treated.... it was a sight to behold. Many miracles amongst all the pain.

Brief Summary of the IMC

International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, non-profit organisation dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through healthcare training and relief and development programmes.

International Medical Corps' mission is to make a long-term improvement to the health of the world's most vulnerable people.

Haiti
International Medical Corps were on the ground in Haiti within 23 hours of the earthquake, saving lives and treating survivors.

Yet even in the thick of emergency response, International Medical Corps is laying the foundation for long-term recovery and self-reliance in Haiti.

· International Medical Corps' long-term recovery effort will prioritise working in partnership with the government and people of Haiti to rebuild medical infrastructure and to fill the gaps left by the death and displacement of health care workers.
· Within days of arriving in Port-Au-Prince, International Medical Corps recruited a team of Haitian medical students who are learning to provide emergency care from our qualified staff.
· In the communities outside the capital, International Medical Corps is training nurses to conduct more advanced wound care and treatment.
· We will build the capacity of remaining health workers in critical areas such as maternal health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, and mental health and psychosocial support as well as pharmacy management, sanitation and hygiene, and emergency response.

This kind of training and programming is so much more than relief. It lays the foundation for sustainable change and saves lives for years to come, helping Haiti recover from this devastating earthquake and emerge even stronger and self-reliant than before.

DANZA CONTEMPORÁNEA DE CUBA / Miguel Iglesias’ interview

March 2010

50 Years of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba

This spring, UK dance fans are in for a treat as the dazzling Danza Contemporanea de Cuba makes its UK debut. World famous, but rarely seen outside of Cuba, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba celebrates its 50th anniversary with its first ever major UK tour throughout February and March 2010. The dance group consists of an electrifying mix of contemporary, classical and Caribbean dance styles and is one of the most exciting, modern groups around.

Danza Contemporanea, as a Cuban dance troop, are supported by Havana Cultura; (http://www.havana-cultura.com/); a global art initiative from Cuban rum, Havana Club. The initiative provides a window on contemporary Cuban culture and was developed to give the spirit of Havana a global voice. The aim of the project is to give modern Cuban artists a unique platform to showcase their work, energy and passion internationally. Exclusive behind the scenes footage of the group can be found on the Havana Cultura site: http://www.havana-cultura.com/EN/performing-art/danza-contemporanea-de-cuba/contemporanean-cuban-dance.html#/733.

The eight venue tour will see Danza Contemporanea de Cuba collaborating with leading international choreographers Mats Ek, Rafael Bonachela, Jan Linkens and will include two UK premieres. With a compulsory curriculum in contemporary dance for children aged 10 upwards, Cuba today produces some of the world’s finest contemporary dancers. They are schooled in a technique that mixes Graham and Afro-Caribbean methods to produce a movement that is strong, fluid and technically excellent. Along with this technique Danza Contemporanea de Cuba’s work reflects the Cuban way of life, with sensual, mystical dance that is performed from the heart.

Havana Cultura, as an initiative, encourages people to explore this unique talent, vibrancy and modernity that the country has to offer. It is the first of its kind to profile artists from all disciplines, from musicians to writers raising awareness of contemporary art and culture of the city of Havana, as well as the richness of Cuban culture.

For their first major UK tour, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba will present two programmes. Programmes A and B will feature the UK premiere of Mambo 3XXI, by young Danza Contemporanea de Cuba principal George Cespedes, which will include an electronic mambo soundtrack by progressive Cuban electro group Nacional Electrónica (http://www.havana-cultura.com/EN/cuban-music/nacional-electronica/new-wave-musical-experimentation-from-cuba.html#/1923). Mambo 3XXI had its world premiere in Havana in December 2009.

Programme A will also feature Rafael Bonachela’s Demo-N/Crazy, which was conceived as a result of an exchange initiated by Assis Carreiro of DanceEast in 2007. The piece is set to Latin music by Julia Wolf, and is inspired by the intimacy that Bonachela observed between the Cuban dancers. Folia by former Dutch National Ballet choreographer Jan Linkens completes Programme A.

Programme B will showcase Mambo 3XXI, and in addition will include the UK premiere of Casi Casa, by Mats Ek, former Artistic Director of Cullberg Ballet and former choreographer with Nederlands Dans Theater, Hamburg Ballet and Paris Opéra Ballet.

During all press nights, authentic Cuban cocktails will be on offer courtesy of Cuban rum, Havana Club. Havana Club will host the main bar and provide the ultimate setting to an evening of the finest Cuban culture and dance.

Danza Contemporanea de Cuba
Contemporary dance is a relatively recent development in Cuba, beginning in 1959 when Ramiro Guerra founded the Conjunto Nacional de Danza Moderna (National Modern Dance Group). Guerra, who had danced with Martha Graham's company in New York, moulded the Conjunto's repertoire into a uniquely Cuban blend of modern American theatre, Afro-Caribbean dance styles and classical European ballet.

The company's name eventually changed to Danza Contemporanea de Cuba. Today it counts 60 dancers drawn from the Escuela Nacional de Arte, Cuba's national art school. A number of dancers from Danza Contemporanea de Cuba have gone on to form their own smaller, experimental companies after dancing with the company.

Currently under the direction of Miguel Iglesias, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba is severely restricted with regards to its available budget and resources, but has nevertheless managed to undergo a small number of tours in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa, and counts more than 70 works in its repertoire.

The conference partners invite submissions of abstracts of no more than 500 words for talks, lecture demonstrations, performances, films, classes, or other modes of presentation, which explore current practice in the field of dance of the African Diaspora. Submissions with a focus on practice-based research are of particular interest. Please clearly indicate the nature and length of your presentation (e.g. 10-minute talk, 50-minute dance performance etc.)

The conference proceedings will be documented, edited and published to add to the knowledge available to those interested in studying in this field.

Re:Generations will give UK-based academics and artists in the field of 'dance of the African Diaspora' a platform alongside their International counterparts, in order to stimulate new developments in the field.

The aims of the conference are to:

2. Explore and stimulate research, documentation and new approaches to teaching in the field.

3. Examine discourses that will inform future practice in the field of dance of the African Diaspora, including questions around definition and terminology.

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Monday April 12th, 2010. Submissions will be accepted by email only. Please direct emails to
info@adad.org.uk, including ‘Re:Generations’ in the subject line.

About the Re:Generations partners

Established in 1985, IRIE! dance theatre is Britain’s leading dance company working in the field of African and Caribbean dance fusion and education. The company delivers and sustains a range of creative, educational and artistic activities, based on the stimuli derived from Africa and the Caribbean. IRIE! promotes culture and diversity through training, outreach, performance and partnership. Located in the heart of South East London the company occupies the Moonshot centre, which houses dance studios, teaching rooms & archive and library facilities; where it continues to run and develop accredited qualifications, research programmes, community engagement and professional development for the dance sector.

The company has provided employment, training, support and mentoring for a significant number of professionals working in dance as well as related cultural industries. IRIE!’s collaborations have spanned across the UK and internationally. Current programmes include a partnership with City & Islington College (FE) and London Metropolitan University (HE) delivering a Dance Foundation Degree, where African and Caribbean dance & culture are taught equally alongside ballet and contemporary dance.
ADAD is a national organisation that supports the practice and appreciation of dance of the African Diaspora. We want dance of the African Diaspora to be visible and valued as part of the British cultural experience. For the past 15 years, ADAD has supported artists through investing in their professional development and raising the profile of their work. ADAD’s flagship programme is Trailblazers, an annual fellowship scheme which provides four artists with a £2,000 bursary and a tailored development programme. The Trailblazers have had an exponential impact on the development of dance of the African Diaspora in the UK, creating new initiatives in performance, education and professional development.
ADAD’s Heritage project, which was created with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund has made a distinctive contribution to collecting, conserving, interpreting and narrating the history and heritage that informs the work of Black dancers in contemporary Britain. It is made up of two components a touring photographic exhibition, ‘Black Dance’ in Britain: 1930s-1990s – Moments, and a book,
Voicing Black Dance: 1930's to 1990's - The British Experience. Launched in October 2006 the exhibition has toured to London, Leicester, Birmingham and Bristol, and continues to tour nationally and internationally.
In 2010/11, ADAD is extending its national reach through a new concentrated programme of work in Yorkshire, UK.
State of Emergency is an Arts Production and Management Company committed to the support, development and profiling of Black choreographers and their work nationally and internationally. Known as ‘the independent voice of Black dance’, State of Emergency is at the forefront in its field and pursues its vision through the driving force of its acclaimed ‘ Mission Programme’, which is a unique umbrella of high quality performances, showcases, tours, conferences, festivals, artists’ training and professional development. Since 1986, State of Emergency has provided development opportunities for hundreds of performing artists in the fields of dance and music. The company has a proven track record in developing talent and is proud of its associations with some of the leading names in the contemporary arts scene. Current projects include ‘The Jingle Dress’ - a national tour of children’s work and ‘Desert Crossings’ - an international touring collaboration with South African choreographer, Gregory Maqoma. SOE are also currently undertaking extensive research into the black choreographic sector in order to support, develop and nurture both existing and emerging talent and to respond effectively to their needs.
