Treading the Baseline...

...is the title of connectingvibes* 2011 Season of Dance. Treading the Baseline is a mixture of revised repertory pieces plus new works created by a mix of well-established and new choreographers. It's a program of work specially designed to open the mind to a multi-sensory experience.

The program for this new season of dance comprises of the following...

Traces of Home
A favourite work featured last season from Jamaica-born choreographer Oniel Pryce. Exploring memories and relationships, the piece is a contemporary fusion of Caribbean dance movements.

Leave Me a Message
This piece explores some of the thousands of messages left in cyberspace every day, from the mundane to last minute pleas of love, life and death.

Waiting for... NEW
A piece that looks at how some people wait forever for the 'Big Moment' - that 'Once in a Lifetime Opportunity', while others refuse to wait preferring to take destiny in their own hands.

Dancehall 3000 NEW
A newly commissioned piece from Dancehall specialist, Paradigmz, that is heavily influenced by the fluidity of dance hall movements linked with a dynamic urban reggae sound. With Dancehall 3000 you'll definitely feel the vibes of contemporary Caribbean movements.

By All Means Necessary NEW
This is a newly commissioned piece by Sheika Edwards, a recent graduate from the Dance Foundation Degree program, it examines the ruthlessness and bravery that you sometimes have to apply when you identify that certain things no longer have a place in your life.

Akosua’s Contemporary dance draws from diverse movement styles, culture, every day behavior and influences of music. Her classes introduce and support participants to develop some of the technical and aesthetic values that shape western dance forms with traces of African dance. The dancer develops the basic physical and interpretative skills required for contemporary dance. An emphasis is placed on the precise relationship between body parts and the energy of performance. The class begins with a warm up. It continues with centre exercises and travelling phases before building physical and interpretative skills through a dance combination in which the dancer displays both freedom and control.

Amara Kante: is one of the world’s foremost proponents of the now world-renowned music and dance culture of the Manding people of West Africa. He ranks amongst the greatest living players of the djembe drum, an instrument rated as the fastest growing in the world.

If its current growth continues, Djembe, pronounced, “jim-bay”, may soon surpass both the steel pan and the conga in international popularity. It first made an impact outside West Africa in the 1950’s due to the world tours of Les Ballets Africaines led by the Guinean Fodeba Keita. Its spread in the U.S. and Canada was centred on Ladji Camara, a member of Les Ballets Africaines who came to the U.S. to work with modern dance icon Katherine Dunham. Since 1960 he has trained multiple generations of American players.

Amara Kante is currently based in Europe and resides in Marseilles. He does however; maintain a rigorous work schedule in Africa, North America and the Caribbean.

Born June 12, 1974 in Abidjan, the capital city of Ivory Coast in West Africa, Amara Kante came from the Forger cast of the Guinea Manding, that historically specialized in an indigenous African Metallurgy and nature based spirituality.

Amara received his calling at the tender age of seven when he was called to play with the legendary musical group Koteba of Abidjan. His ability to master a wide range of instruments such as dununs, bara, n’tama, and krin, his encyclopaedic memory of rhythms and his exceptional technique on the djembe drum, soon led to acknowledgement of his status as a master drummer and his acclaim as one of the greatest African artists in the world today.

Continuing in the tradition of Koteba and Les Ballets Africaines, Amara has opened his doors to the entire world and has performed on all continents. His resume is astounding. He has worked in the capacity of artistic director, teacher, master drummer, and performed with great artists such as Mory Kante, Peter Gabriel, Georges M’onboye, Moriba Koite, Benkan Foli and Rockiya Kone.

Amara was first invited to Toronto’s Muhtadi International Drum Festival in 2006 and has since contributed greatly to the culture of Toronto by teaching workshops and sharing his culture especially amongst youth.

In 2007, he co-founded Baro Dununba, a Toronto based percussion ensemble dedicated to the percussion music of Africa and the African Diaspora.

He is looking forward to finishing his new album and continued involvement with and contribution to culture in Canada.

Ibrahima Kone: was born in Bouaké, which is a village situated in the center of the Ivory Coast. His origins are from the Mandika people.

Artist dancer choreographer and director from the Ivory Coast. Holder d' a Certificate of Professional Competence of the DRAC d' Aix-en-Provence. Former student of l' INA (Institute National of Arts in Coast d' Ivory), and ex choreographer of the Foliba Company with Adama DRAMA. He teaches the traditional dances of l' Africa of l' West in the area of PACA. In short, his teachings are based on what he thinks is important concerning dance: He also teaches the culture with stories and what the dances mean.
Ibrahima has traveled extensively and taught in both Europe and the USA.
