.
Top class dancer and choreographer, Papson is an endless source of
creativity and energy. His style is a mix of traditional African dance
with modern elements.
The new generation of African dance grown in urban spaces finds itself
today on concert and theatre stages.

Famous African artists ask him regularly to create choreographies for
their video clips and shows: Tiken Jah Fakoly, Oumou Sangaré, Césaria
Evora, Khaled, Shaft, Norma Claire, Aïcha Koni, Tissénifo, Savane
Allah, Samba Oussou, Amadou e Mariam and Rokia Troare.

As a child, he was called the father of the sound as he was always
running and looking for the sounds of the Djembedrum. Papson
participated on his first dance contest at the age of 5 years. Later
his parents didn’t want him to become a dancer, so he left his family
to follow his dream.
His journey took him through several African countries and national
ballets to Paris. Before he settled down in Paris he became the
choreographer of the Ivory Dance company and latter the assistant
choreographer of George Momboye (AfriKa Afrika).

Since 2003 he works as a freelance choreographer and dancer. In 2009
he created his first Afro contemporary Dance Theatre “ Mon Histoire “.

Dear students, friends and community,

Please, find below details of my forthcoming workshop at Feedback33 next week, the Professional Dancers' Mentoring Forum set up by Sheron Wray.

The dance on Thursday 12th May will be Palo (intermediate and advanced level), which is probably the most energetic and physically challenging of all Afro-Cuban dances. Its name derives from the sticks or poles with which it's usually performed. Palo was brought to Cuba by African slaves from mainly the Zaire region, although some also came from what is nowadays known as Angola and the Congo. Interestingly, the collective name these captives received in Cuba was congos, regardless of their provenance. The dance is characterised by rhythmic, syncopated and non-stopping shoulders' movement. The upper body is usually kept as close to the floor as possible whilst the legs are bent.

The class on Thursday 12th May will be conducted on bare feet. The session will be divided into three sections: Warm-up where we will concentrate on rhythm, stretching, toning and strengthening of muscles. This will be followed by a routine where isolated steps will be taught first, followed by a short sequence. And lastly, we'll have a warm-down where we will focus on stretching, relaxation and breathing. Some of these exercises have yogic influences..

Live music will be provided by the outstanding percussionist Hamish Orr on congas.

The London Studio Centre, 42 - 50 York Way (adjacent to Lincoln Lounge), London N1 9AB.

The workshop will begin 7:30pm and will finish at 9pm. Registration will take place at 7pm.

I would like to thank Feedback33's coordinator Paula Allen for inviting me again. I've long been a supporter of Feedback33 and its vision. It's an honour for me to come back.

I look forward to seeing you all there next Thursday 12th May.

Mario López-Goicoechea

Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson, will release his latest album - The Havana Suite, with a live performance on 17th May at London ’s Soho restaurant/bar/club -Floridita. The album is the culmination of his collaboration and work with Trio Mestizo, and is a homage to Havana and its famous decaying beauty.

This compilation of beautiful works by Cuban composer Eduardo Martin, features the combined talents of Ahmed’s sublime guitar playing, together with the percussion and musical co-production of Hammadi Rencurrel, and Emma Blanco on violin.

An innovative production, the album exploits the interaction between contemporary Cuban guitar sonorities and well-known Cuban musical genres such as Rumba, Danzon, Cha-cha-cha, Changui, Bolero, and Timba, amongst others.

The performance will take place at 7.30 pm and guests can stay to enjoy a typically Cuban atmosphere, dancing to Floridita’s live Cuban band Moneda Nacional direct from Havana, and/or enjoy cocktails or dinner in the bar and restaurant.
