The Drum, in association with The Albany , Contact , UK Arts Intern ational and Afrovibes Foundation The Netherlands presents the Afrovibes Festival
Join us at The Albany, Deptford, The Drum, Birmingham and Contact, Manchester for a three week festival of cutting edge theatre, dance and visual arts from contemporary South Africa . The festival begins on 5th October at The Albany, before moving to The Drum on 12th October and then Contact on 19th.
The Afrovibes Festival will transform each venue into a South African shebeen - the setting for a lively programme of theatre and dance, late night music, workshops, post show talks, performance poetry and an authentic South African inspired menu in the Township Cafe.
The productions within the festival will also be going out solo to various venues around the country so make sure you do not miss out!

Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom's Welcome to Rocksburg
Dubbed ‘the Township Tarantino’ Grootboom’s work continues to amaze audiences the world over as he proves to be one of the most exciting writers and directors to be working in post-apartheid South Africa .
Following the success of Township Stories, Welcome to Rocksburg is a fast paced, edge of your seat, action packed rollercoaster of a play: a cat and mouse game between the criminal underworld and a corrupt police force told in the tradition of the Hollywood action movie, complete with live drumming underscoring the stylised action on stage.
"One of the most remarkable pieces of theatre to emerge from post-apartheid South-Africa" Lyn Gardner , The Guardian (on Township Stories)

Ncamisa! Kiss the Women Directed by Peter Hayes
Ncamisa! Kiss the Women is an explosive and emotional play exploring the consequences of being a lesbian in a Cape Town township.
‘A beautifully crafted piece of theatre that rather than pointing fingers, celebrates the lives, loves, ups and downs of these young women. While the subject matter is controversial and may be viewed as “difficult”, Pam and Peter have created a supremely entertaining stage work, filled with humour and pathos, light and shade.’ SA Mail and Guardian.
A gritty world of deep passions, serious relationships and casual violence woven together with soccer and song with unique interpretations from Anthony and The Johnsons and Lucinda Williams.
"This is the kind of theatre needed to change attitudes" Citizen S.A
