Afterwards there will be a book signing. In her new book, Brenda Dixon Gottschild uses the career of Joan Myers Brown the legendary founder of the historic Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO), as a fulcrum to leverage an investigation of the interface between performance, cultural formation, and race politics as evidenced by the development of a dance community in Black Philadelphia and the rise and spread of its influence beyond community and regional borders to national and international distinction.

Brenda Dixon Gottschild is Professor Emeritus of Dance Studies at Temple University and Research Fellow in the Centre for Folklore and Ethnography, University of Pennsylvania. She writes for Dance Magazine and is author of Digging the Africanist Presence in American Performance: Dance and Other Contexts.

Margins to Mainstream

May 10th, 2012

The Drum, Birmingham

A ground-breaking documentary, using rediscoveries of forgotten plays from the archives and fascinating interviews with theatre heavyweights such as Kwame Kwei Armah, Patricia Cumper and Jonzi D to reveal the untold story of a dynamic art form. From Ira Aldridge playing Othello in Covent Garden in the 1830s, to Bashy playing Markus the Sadist in a “rap opera” in 2010, the richness of this story is in its diversity. It highlights the battles and triumphs of Black British Theatre on its journey from the margins to the mainstream. Visit the-drum.org.uk for booking and more info.

Correction

In March's ADAD News the title of Leo Kay’s play was incorrectly written as It’s Life He’s Knocking. The title of this work is in fact It’s Like He’s Knocking.

We are a commercial music company who have been asked to supply music for a very short animation film. This is part of an online campaign to increase awareness of hygiene in African rural communities and is a co-operation between Domestos bleach and the charity UNICEF.
We are looking for a small group of African children to sing a very simple one line tune. This has already been written and approved but I think it should be voiced by real African children, or at least children who have some background in African music.

Ideally I would like about five kids from ages around six to twelve, either girls or unbroken boys voices. They need not be in any way trained singers, but should be able to sing. They could come from any African country. They would be paid (unclear how much at the moment) and of course chaperones would be compensated.

I’d be grateful if you could help with this.

Best Regards,

Charlie Spencer

Greetings ,

I trust you are well.

It's 10 years since Ms Serwah and I founded BTWSC and BritishBlackMusic.com/Black Music Congress. Sadly, will have a "soft" commemoration in 2012, and mark this milestone "properly" in 2013. Nevertheless this year's British Black Music Month (BBMM) launch at Westminster City Hall on Thursday May 31 2012, 6-8.30pm, is going to be special, hence the one month notice to make sure you book in good time.

If you can make it, then book now at: www.bbmbmc.eventbrite.com. It is a free event, so you are welcome to invite anyone you think may be interested.

We're keeping much of the BBMM2012 programme under wraps. But we can however reveal two events, which you can book for now:

Talking Copyright: Is Copyright Fit For Purpose In An Age Of Free* Thursday June 21, 6.30-9pm @ a central London venue: http://bbmbmc2012copyright.eventbrite.com

Music Biz Empowerment Half-Day Courses Tuesday July 3 and 10, 10.15am-4.30pm @ a central London venue: http://bbmbmc2012courses.eventbrite.com

Kind regards,
Kwaku
editor@BritishBlackMusic.com
www.BritishBlackMusic.com
www.BTWSC.com

British Black Music Month (BBMM) 2012 launches on Thursday May 31 2012, 6.00pm-8.30pm in central London with a presentation and debate entitled British Black Music: How Far Have We Come? The debate will be preceded by the screening of a presentation by BMM/BMC founder Kwaku taking into context this year’s sub-themes - the 10th anniversary of BBM/BMC, Jamaica & Trinidad @ 50, Marcus Garvey @ 100 and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor @ 100, plus highlighting 10 years of BTWSC and BBM/BMC. In association with WSDG. Free: www.BBMBMC.eventbrite.com.

Institute of Commonwealth Studies, in conjunction with the Black & Asian Studies Association, present Black and Asian Britain seminars: African, Not Black History: Arguments for “African” on Tuesday May 29 2012, 6-7.30pm at Senate House (room tbc), University of London . “Black” in Britain used to be a “political colour of alliances”, but now whom does it represent? Should we not use “African”? Kwaku, a history consultant and community activist, will focus on the issue of African identity. Presentation is preceded by the screening of the short-ish version of ‘The African Or Black Question’ guerilla documentary and ends with a Q&A. Free: www.TAOBQ.eventbrite.com
